As usual Logan was barbecuing. Which of course Veronica didn’t mind. It wasn’t like she could really could, if Logan wanted to more power to him. He had invited Leon over, which also Veronica didn’t mind. As hard of a time as she gave the guy she did like him.
They were all in the backyard. Veronica sitting at the table, Backup laying down on the ground next to her chair. The boys had beers, but Veronica didn’t. Fucking pregnancy. She considered making Logan give up drinking in solidarity but decided against it. He was dealing with a hormonal girlfriend. The guy deserved a few drinks. As long as he remained sober enough to drive for whenever she got a craving.
Speaking of…
“When are the burgers going to be ready?” Veronica asked popping a potato chip into her mouth. “I’m starved.”
“Just a few minutes,” Logan told her, flipping the meat on the grill. He had asked Leon to chop the vegetables. It sounded safer to not give Veronica knives right now. “There’s a vegetable plate on the table.” And that statement would have earned one of those knives.
He took a drink of his beer, enjoying the sun. Who would have thought that he would be settled in a house with a baby on the way? No one. Nobody knew it, but he had been kind of anxious to say something about it. It was so hard to wait, but pretty soon they wouldn’t have to.
It had taken Leon ages and a couple of different tries to find a kind of veggie burger that didn't taste like soggy cardboard, but he’d managed it. The burgers he'd brought were nearly as good as a real burger. He’d still yet to find a vegetarian meal that D had taken Leon to in the dreams - Leon had actually been shocked to learn it was vegetarian, everything had tasted so close to the real deal - but then, if it meant he needed to have a cannibalistic chef, he’d pass.
He chopped vegetables easily, if not somewhat unevenly, occasionally popping a piece of cucumber or carrot into his mouth. He usually liked to man the grill, but he hadn't had much of a stomach for it since switching over to the rabbit diet. But Logan could also grill a pretty mean burger, and so long as you didn't burn it, it was difficult to screw up a veggie burger.
He frowned a little at Veronica. He hadn't wanted to say anything, but he was a few beers in by now. The normally petite girl was starting to gain weight, and watching her now, Leon was starting to see why. “Yeah, Veronica. Maybe you ought to lay off the chips,” Leon offered helpfully.
Seriously? First with the vegetables and then saying she needed to lay off the chips? Veronica glared at both of them grabbing another large handful of chips and stuffing them in her mouth. Just to prove a point. “I’ll eat what I want,” she said once she had swallowed. Her tone more bitter than usual. “Do either of you have a problem with that?”
Oh shit. Logan bit his tongue, trying to do the smart thing. Veronica could definitely be moody. Hormones were not fun. Now see why she doesn’t need knives? he thought. “Enjoy your chips,” he said, giving her a wink.
“If you separate a girl from her chips, you are liable to lose a hand,” he told Leon, so tempted to just spill the beans. “What’s up with all the veggies? Are you turning into a bunny on me? I think you might sprout a cute, fluffy tail next.”
Leon frowned at Logan’s question. The truth was, he had ended up having a conversation with a bunch of slaughterhouse cows and he couldn't really justify eating them after that. But he hadn't told Logan about his the abilities his dreams had bestowed upon him yet. The only people who knew were people who’d found out entirely by accident. “Well, you know. I figured animals have feelings too. Probably. Maybe.” He cleared his throat a little uneasily, and then turned his attention back to Veronica.
“Anyway, V. We’re not that young anymore. Those saturated fats tend to stick nowadays.” He didn't straight up say that they seemed to be especially keen on sticking to Veronica’s hips, but it was implied in the way he looked at her.
At least Logan knew better. Probably from over a year of being in a relationship with her. And the fact that he actually knew she was pregnant. You didn’t mess with Veronica under normal circumstances, but with the pregnancy hormones? Yeah you’d be beyond an idiot to mess with her.
Veronica ignored the comment about Leon hurting an animal’s feelings. There were so many witty remarks that came to mind. Which she would have said if the comment about saturated fats hadn’t come out of his mouth. Along with how he was looking at her. “I’m pregnant you idiot.”
Well…. There it was. The cat was out of the bag.
“Surprise!” Logan said, smiling brightly. There was a bit of smugness on his lips. Yes, he had created a baby, and they were going to be parents. He was proud of that.
“My kid is quite a fan of salt, and apparently ice cream and chocolate, and meat.” He should probably watch her diet a little bit more, but getting her into the pregnancy was hard enough. He still didn’t understand about the animals, but they provided protein, and that was healthy, so he wasn’t about to lean towards plants. “I didn’t know you were so touchy feely about the animals, Leon.” How many times had they stopped for burgers at the pub? Too many to count.
Leon choked on the piece of celery he’d been munching on, and had to pound himself in the chest a couple of times to get the piece of vegetable loose. “You’re what?” he asked. Out of everything he’d expected her to say, that definitely wasn’t one of them. He really couldn’t picture Veronica of all people pregnant. He almost felt bad for Logan. That aside, what was it with apparently everyone he knew pumping out children. Was he already at that age?
And if she was pregnant - which, looking back over the last couple of weeks actually made a whole lot of sense - then wasn’t it even more important to get her off the chips and eating vegetables instead? Really, she should take more care with her diet. “The dreams can make you look at things in a different way,” Leon said absently, eyeing the bowl of chips critically. “How the fuck did this happen?”
Veronica was going to eat whatever the hell she wanted. If Leon had a problem with that too fucking bad. It was good he didn’t say it out loud though, she might have tased him… again.
“Well you see,” Veronica began her usual sarcastic self. “When a man and a woman love each other, they do this special dance.” Yes she was going for the child friendly version instead of into graphic detail, and yes she was still being sarcastic. Leon knew perfectly well how babies were made, he shouldn’t be asking such stupid questions around Veronica.
“They do the special dance naked,” Logan added in, throwing a chip at Leon. “You really shouldn’t do that until you are married, but sometimes these things happen. Anyway, after the bee has pollinated the flower, a baby begins to grow, and as the baby grows, it needs a bigger living space.”
He was laughing as he took some chips for himself. “It also means that you are going to help me paint the nursery.”
“I know how babies are made,” Leon snapped. He ran his hand down his face, sighing. Now they were finishing each other’s sentences. What was next? Matching t-shirts? Three matching t-shirts, one for the mini-them that was on the way?
That was stupid. Veronica and Logan weren’t that sickeningly coupley. But then again, he hadn’t thought they were going to have a baby either. In fact, he thought they were his friends who could join him in not ever having children. “Well, if I can do anything, it’s paint a nursery,” he said after a moment. He should probably try to be happy for him. Besides, unless zombies could get knocked up, he at least had Liv still. And Riza just had her nephews, and didn’t seem likely to pop out one of her own any time soon.
“Great,” Veronica replied with a smirk. Both to Leon knowing how babies were made and helping with the nursery. God, she was going to have a nursery soon. What happened to her life? But she wasn’t going to focus on that right now. It would just call spiraling which no one needed. Instead… “Now that that”s</is>Uncle Leon. That had a good ring to it. He smiled and swiped at his nose a little self-consciously. “Yeah, Chris’d like that,” he said. “He’s great with babies too. He’d probably volunteer to babysit and everything.”
Maybe Veronica and Logan having a baby wouldn’t be such a bad thing after all.
