Veronica’s life had been turned upside down. Back when it was just the five at home pregnancy tests she could still tell herself she wasn’t really pregnant. Not until a doctor made it official. But now she had had the ultrasound and there was no more denying it. She actually had to prepare now.
Still, she was doing her best to distract herself. Which meant burying herself in her work. Which was precisely what she was doing when she quickly needed to leave the office to get sick. Freakin’ morning sickness. “Ugh, Logan I’m going to kill you,” she muttered in between bouts of nausea. Once she felt good enough to get back to work she exited the stall and went to rinse out her mouth in the sink, before exiting the bathroom and running right into Sharon. “Oh, hey,” Veronica greeted her friend clearly a bit flustered.
“Hey,” Sharon said, her eyebrow furrowed as she looked at Veronica. She’d just popped into the bathroom to pee, and wasn’t expecting to see her friend coming out of the stall. Especially after those sounds. It was mildly disturbing. “Are you all right?” Sharon asked, stepping out of the way so that Veronica could rinse her mouth in the sink. “Do you need to go home?”
Mouth rinsed and refreshed she turned her attention to Sharon. “I’m fine,” Veronica assured her. “Burrito I had for lunch must not have agreed with me,” which could technically be true. “Don’t worry I don’t have the flu or anything. Not contagious.”
“You eat those burritos all the time.” Sharon argued. The pair of them ate together, and neither of them had ever had any ill effects from that place. “Are you sure you’re okay? You’re not pregnant, are you?” Sharon was teasing. She knew that pregnancy and family building were not in her friend’s immediate plans. Well, they weren’t in Sharon’s immediate plans, either, when Veronica found that positive pregnancy test in the bathroom trash can.
Veronica paled at Sharon’s question. She could tell her friend was just teasing, but man she was so right. While Veronica had come to terms with the whole popping out a human being thing, (she wasn’t half as excited as Logan), it was still weird to hear it out loud. To think about it. “That would be a yes,” Veronica replied seriously, not with her usual sarcasm.
Sharon turned to stare at her friend. A hand came up to touch Veronica’s arm as Sharon tried to decide whether her friend was being sarcastic. She quickly realized what was going on. “Shut the front door.” She said, happiness welling up within her. “Are you serious?”
“Pregnancy is not something I’d joke about.” Which was saying a lot given that Veronica was usually on the sarcastic side. But there was no way in hell she would pretend to be pregnant even as a joke. “Looks like Viv is gonna have a new friend to play with.”
“Wow!” Sharon said, unable to stop the grin from spreading. Of course, she knew this wasn’t in Veronica’s plan, but she was excited. Shocked, but excited. And she wondered what Logan thought about the whole thing, too. He was probably way more excited than Veronica was. Sharon wondered about Leon. Did he know? What did he think? He’d been pretty supportive of Sharon during her pregnancy… but it must be weird to be a guy surrounded by women having babies.
“This is… well, congratulations!” Sharon said, and reached forward to give her friend a hug. “And… I’m sorry?”
“How about we go with neither,” Veronica replied only half joking. She wasn’t sure how she felt about the pregnancy still. She wasn’t quite excited about it. So congratulations wasn’t exactly fitting. But she wasn’t dreading having the baby either. “Let’s just get some ice cream after work.”
"Sounds like a plan to me." Sharon was excited to help Veronica indulge in her pregnancy cravings, just as her friend had done for Sharon when she was pregnant. "And you know where to find me if you need me before then."
