Clary was sat in the cafeteria, trying to read one of the chapters of her text books but failing miserably. Nursing her cup of coffee, she sighed and watched the students milling about. She’d been distracted for a while now, worrying about Jace, hoping he wasn’t going to overdo things and put himself back in the hospital. That she would wake up and another Dream would have ripped a new unhealable hole in his chest. Drifting off into thought, she didn’t see her friend approach her.
Anna was fairly distracted for the first week of school. She’d bumped into her ex when she was supposed to be meeting Wash for dinner (and other things) but the night went to shit really fast. And now she was sad and lonely and embarrassed and second-guessing everything all over again. No wonder Wash only wanted what he wanted, and nothing more. Because Anna was… unloveable. At least, in a romantic way. She had friends and family who loved her--who’d die for her, and she for them--but nothing more than that. That was the way her life went.
She wandered into the Dining Commons, collected some food, and searched for a friendly face. There was Clary. Anna grabbed her tray and headed in her friend’s direction, then settled down at the table across from the other girl. “Hey.”
“Hey there!” Clary smiled up at her. “How are things? You ok?” she asked, frowning as she looked over her normally bouncy friend.
“Hey.” Anna repeated herself, then forced a smile. “Yeah, I’m okay. I’m a little distracted.” She had a roll on her plate, so she picked it up and started to rip it apart. “How are you?”
“I’m fine, stop trying to deflect,” Clary turned to her friend in concern, she didn’t need to know about the madness that had been Jace’s Dreams and emergency trip to the hospital just yet. “Distracted good or distracted bad?” she asked.
It was a good friend who could see Anna’s change in demeanor and call her out on it. Anna gave a tired smile, knowing she was caught. She shrugged her shoulders. “Kinda bad. I mean, I’m just… questioning everything. You know?"
“What do you mean? What’s happened?” Clary asked, shifting to sit closer to Anna and putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Nothing. Nothing’s happened, I just… I’m starting to realize that my Dreams have more of an impact on my life than I thought they had. I mean, the guy in them… he had a point. I don’t think it was the same point that he thought he made, but…” She sighed. “Maybe I’m just not meant to find true love.”
“What? Why would you say that?” Clary asked with a frown, wrapping an arm around her friend’s shoulder and rubbing her arm comfortingly. “What did the guy in your Dreams say exactly? And what makes you say you’ll never find true love?”
“It’s not really important,” Anna shook her head, though the comfort from her friend’s arm around her shoulders actually really helped. “Because, well… I thought I had it. A couple of times. And it just… didn’t. It wasn’t. Not what I was looking for. And now I’m sort of… spending time with someone, and I don’t know if it’s… anything. Really.”
“Hey now, it’s important to you, don’t dismiss that,” Clary said, rubbing her friend’s arm as she sighed. “I know it’s hard, to think you have it and then have it seemingly taken away, but...look,” she sighed and shifted in her seat. “I could give you the whole ‘there are plenty of fish in the sea’ line, which I’m sure you already know, but honestly? You don’t need to be worrying about this! You are a beautiful, bright and bubbly girl who is kicking ass at college! You are like seriously one of the most awesome people I know, don’t forget that and when the right guy comes along, he is going to know exactly how lucky he is and be begging at your feet just to get you to say hi to him,” she smiled at her. “And with this someone you’re spending time with, just enjoy it and let it be what it’s going to be. Otherwise you could potentially do more damage trying to force love out of it than if you didn’t,” she reasoned.
Anna’s face went a little red at her friend’s compliments, and then she dipped her head, smiling shyly. “Thanks, Clary,” she said, bumping her shoulder into the other girl’s. “I’m trying. I’m really trying. I’m not going to say anything to--I mean, I haven’t even seen him in--well, he’s not around at the moment. So I’m not … messing anything up.”
“You don’t need to try Anna, you’re awesome. And you’re not messing anything up, if this someone is stupid enough to not treat you well then let them walk, they’re obviously an idiot,” Clary smiled at her. “Now come on, eat your lunch before it gets cold, then we’re going to have a hot chocolate at Baxters,” she said firmly.
Anna smiled softly. She was relieved and thankful to have a friend like Clary. “Thanks. You’re right, you’re right. All right, let’s eat. And then … ooh, a cookie, too.” Anna gave her friend a nod, then started in on her lunch.
