Who: Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes
What: Late night coffee
When: Friday, after the gala
Where: Luke's Diner
Ratings/Warnings: Rated Green for Jealousy!
Status: In Progress

It was late when Lorelai was heading home from the gala. She'd had more than a few drinks, and ended up taking a cab home. But as the taxi drove past the diner, she suddenly sat up straighter. "Hey, hey, stop here. Here's good." She paid the man and climbed out of the cab.

She could see Luke inside, closing up shop. The chairs were on top of the tables, and the sign had been flipped over to 'Closed'. Lorelai tapped on the door, making puppydog faces through the glass. "Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

She was dressed in a little black number, dressed up with pearls and a pair of kickass heels, which she was currently holding instead of wearing.

Luke wasn't exactly the kind of guy who went to Galas. His invitation from Stark Industries went straight into the trash can. He hadn't even really thought about asking Lorelai even though he probably should have. Yeah, he was basically in love with her but he was in complete denial about it. Men who were in denial didn't usually ask the girl out on dates.

It wasn't a surprise that she went though, which he figured was the case when he found Lorelai tapping on his door making puppy dog faces to let her in. He gave her a very classic Luke look like 'what the hell are you doing' but went to the door and opened it anyway.

"Come on, get in here," he told her and then closed and locked the door behind her. He went to go make a fresh pot of coffee.

"Smart move," Lorelai told him, stepping inside and pulling a chair down from the counter. "All that huffing and puffing would really mess up my hair." She sat down, putting her shoes on the floor next to her.

It was good to have him back. Cesar could make a decent pot of coffee, but he wouldn't have let her in this late. They had a nice vibe, him just starting up a pot of coffee without her having to say a word.

"So, did you hang up the dice?"

"And we wouldn't want that," Luke replied in a sarcastic tone. He actually didn't really care about Lorelai's hair. It always looked good.

"You know those things are illegal, right? You can't have dice hanging on your rear view mirror. You go out on a date or somethin?"

"Oh, please," Lorelai said, waving dismissively. "Nobody gets in trouble for that. 'Watch out, boys, he's got fuzzy dice!'"

"I went to that gala," Lorelai said, smiling. She seemed significantly more cheerful than she normally did on Friday nights. "It wasn't nearly as stuffy as I thought an Emily Gilmore-approved event would be."

"All they need is an excuse to pull you over and then the next thing you know they're searching your truck for drugs." Not that that had ever happened to Luke. That would be silly.

"The one over at Stark Industries?" he asked and he got a coffee cup out from under the counter and placed it in front of Lorelai.

"Well, that makes sense. Fuzzy dice would be a perfect place to hide drugs. And they're pretty much the gateway car decor. Won't be long before you have flame seat-covers, Troll dolls all along the back of the truck, and those little plastic--Ooh, coffee!" From the dangling gestures she made, it was probably best she didn't finish that thought.

"Yup," she said, taking a sip. "You should've come. There was a giraffe!"

At least Luke knew how to shut Lorelai up. It usually involved distracting her with coffee. He used it on a regular basis.

"Do I even want to know?" he asked as he resumed mathing with the receipts for the day.

"Oh, you know. Celebrities sneaking in giraffes, like they do. He had a little top hat and a bow tie! Shame the monocle fell off, though." Somehow, Lorelai was not making all of this up, though she wouldn't blame Luke if he didn't believe her. "And there was almost a fistfight with dudes in suits."

"Seriously, they should've put 'Not your grandma's gala!' on the invites in neon orange font. Maybe a monster truck on the back." Was that what it took to get Luke interested in things? Maybe a promise of free fish bait? She honestly thought he would've enjoyed it.

Sure enough Luke didn't believe anything Lorelai was saying. Hey, just consider the source. It was like Lorelai's favorite past time to make up fantastical stories just to annoy him.

Luke did stop his mathing long enough to give Lorelai a weary look though. "Are you drunk?" he asked. He wasn't sure if he'd ever seen Lorelai drunk before.

"What? Luke, no." Lorelai made a face, surprised. "I mean, I had a few drinks at the party, but I'm not drunk." Maybe a little tipsy, but he should've seen Tony Stark. Of course, if they were using Tony to set the new bar of drunkenness, most people would probably die of alcohol poisoning before they got drunk.

"You just wait for tomorrow's newspaper. It'll be all 'giraffes and monster trucks,' you'll see."

"Right," Luke still wasn't convinced. "You bring in that newspaper tomorrow with giraffes in it and I'll give you free coffee for a week."

"You're on," she said, grinning. She was already treated like a VIP around here, opening up late just for her.

She looked up at him. She'd had a dream recently that they'd been in the diner and she'd gotten a call about her father having a heart attack. Luke had driven her a long way to the city and stayed with her at the hospital. It was amazingly sweet, and she was really touched. It was just a dream, and she was probably a little crazy for getting so emotional about it. But she could see Luke doing something like that for her.

"Hey Luke?" she said softly, looking up at him. "Thanks."

Luke wasn't sure what Lorelai was thanking him for, but wit these kind of things sometimes it was better to just not ask. He understood things like that. He just gave Lorelai a rare smile (which usually looked more like a grimace than anything else) and shrugged. "Yeah, sure," he said.
