Wanda strolled through the quad, planning to find a place to sit down and go over her books before the next session. Spotting Anna by a tree, she headed over and waved, giving her a little smile. “Hey, how are you? Do you mind if I sit with you?” she asked.
The last week had been a bit of a blur. Anna had an unusual encounter with her ex, felt like everything was messed up with her FWB, and had to get used to classes and the like for the start of the quarter. She was sitting under a tree, trying to do some reading, but staring off into space instead. Classes started on the twenty-second, and Anna was already a little behind in her studies. She glanced up at her friend’s voice, and nodded. It should be noted that this Anna was far from perky and bubbly. She was distracted and quiet.
“Hey, Wanda. Come sit.”
“Thanks,” Wanda grinned, settling herself down on the floor next to Anna. “So how are things going? Are you looking forward to classes starting again?” she asked, pulling out some of her books.
“Oh, yes.” Anna was definitely looking forward to getting things really going. It would be more of a distraction from the way her life had sort of taken a twist. Bumping into her ex and then Wash disappeared, and she was more than a little depressed about her life. School was something she could throw herself into and focus on. It hadn’t worked too much so far, but she had hopes.
“How about you? Are you enjoying the start of the semester?” Anna asked.
“Absolutely! The summer was too long to have no classes,” Wanda joked. “I think next year I will take some over the summer,” she nodded, resolutely. Taking a moment to look Anna over, she tilted her head and asked, “Are you sure you are ok? You seem...different.”
“Mmm. Maybe taking summer classes is the best way to graduate on time,” Anna said, musing aloud to herself. Now she’d decided on a double major, with still no real career aspects, Anna was struggling a little about the whole school thing, too. It just felt like everything was blah lately. She sighed. “I’m okay. I’ve sort of… can I tell you something secret?” She asked, leaning in a little.
“Of course you can, my friend,” Wanda told her, copying Anna and leaning in to listen intently. “I will keep whatever you say a complete secret,” she told her honestly.
“Well, there’s this guy. And I like him a lot. And then… there’s my Dreams. And I think--I think that um... “ Anna sighed. “The guy I was in love with in my Dreams told me that no one loved me. And I think he might be right.”
“That is not true,” Wanda shook her head. “You are bright and friendly and so accepting that I just know people all around you love you. Do you have family? They will love you regardless,” she offered a little smile.
“Family’s wonderful. I love my sister, I love my friends. But it’s not romance.” Anna sighed. “I know it’s ridiculous and silly, but it’s something I’ve dreamed about my whole life.”
Wanda nodded, understanding the difference between the loves she sought. “I know what you mean, even though I have never really considered it for myself before,” she gave a little laugh. “I do not believe that no-one will ever love you though. I believe that there are a great many people in the world and it just takes time to meet them and even love them. You are still so young, don’t be sad that you have not met the right person just yet. I am sure it will come as quite a surprise when it happens,” she smiled, taking hold of Anna’s hand and squeezing it.
Somehow being around her friends really helped when Anna was feeling down. She was energised by supportive friends, and would seriously do anything in her power to protect them. Wanda was a good friend. Anna gave her a smile in return, feeling a little better. “You’re right. I mean, I know you’re right. I’m just being silly. It’s hard to shake though. Hey, you know what might help? Some Thai Iced Tea. Do you like Thai Iced Tea? My treat.”
“You are not being silly, it obviously matters to you a lot. I just think you need to keep in mind that there are so many people out there and hardly any of them will be worthy of you, because you are so special,” Wanda told her proudly and winked at her. “I have not, but I am learning that if I want to try anything new, then I should come and see you,” she bumped shoulders with Anna, glad to see she was cheering up at least a little.
Anna laughed a little. “I think you’re not giving the world out there enough credit,” she said. Ever the optimist, Anna was sure there were plenty of people out there who were worthy of her. She just had to find the right one. “All right, come on. Let’s go have a Thai Iced Tea.” She looped her arm through her friend’s to lead her to the restaurant. “And you can tell me everything that’s going on with you.” Enough about Anna and her problems.
Wanda made a face as they got up to head to the restaurant. “You want to hear about my problems? How long have you got?” she laughed.
