Bast liked a lot of things. Most notably her very very nice car. She knew it wasn’t really hers, but she’d already laid on it with very serious affection for two whole minutes the first day she got it, which effectively meant it was hers. Plus, it wasn’t like the people she took it from were using it. At least they wouldn’t be now that it was destroyed. Dreams were a very strange thing and she couldn’t help but wonder about them a little. Were Sadie and Carter in this world? Would she ever run into them? Were her dream siblings here?
She’d spend time thinking about it later, but for now, she was pulling up to the spot they’d agreed on, leaning over and pushing her sunglasses up. “Get in loser, we’re going shopping.” She really couldn’t help herself. “Okay, we’re not actually going shopping, but I couldn’t resist.”
***
Presto laughed, and hopped in, grinning as he did so. “I like it. And this car is almost as gorgeous as you are.” he smiled as he settled in, buckling his restraint, and nodded. “Are you enjoying your car?”
She seemed in good spirits, and he felt himself bouncy in response. Of course, he was usually bouncy, so, yes.
***
“Flattery will get you almost everywhere. It would get you everywhere if I were a Greek god, however.” The Greeks always seemed fairly open when it came to their relationships with mortals. But she supposed she couldn’t judge them too harshly. “But it’s been wonderful. I think I made a great choice when it came to car thievery in the dreams. This is the most stylish thing I’ve driven ever.”
She was almost always in good spirits. She was the goddess of love and joy as well as all the other bits and bops. Though goddess of cats was the thing everyone remembered her for. Cats and protection. Of course, like most cats, she was prone to mood swings. She just happened to be in a good mood today.
***
Presto blushed bright red. “Oh? Ohhhh.” Yep, brb, blushing forever. He shook his head and listened, grinning. “It’s an awesome car. It would only be more awesome if it had a flying enchantment.”
He bounced as he settled, listening, and watching her. She was gorgeous, and kind, and very bubbly.
“What do you do in this life to keep yourself entertained?”
***
Bast couldn’t help the laugh that escaped in that moment. She was a cat goddess after all. Doing things for her own amusement was second nature. “Well, once I can figure out how to make it fly, it will. Though, that is not really one of my strengths.” She let out a small sigh before cheering up again a moment later.
“Well, I spend a lot of time protecting famous people from dangerous types, which I think I might have mentioned, but then sometimes it all blends together so much. That could have been almost anyone. But when I’m not doing that, I’m usually blogging or napping. Oh! And I have just taken up learning a secret fighting style from my champion! He’s very delightful! I can definitely see what alternate dream universe me would choose him.”
She glanced over quickly. “And what do you do?”
***
“If I ever get my dream self’s magic, I might be able to do that.” He nodded, grinning as she drove.
“Yeah? Pretty cool.” He smiled a little, and chuckled. “Sounds like a busy life.” he shook his head. “I work as a computer engineer, and also intern at Stark Enterprises, as well as attending school and… nothing much else.” he chuckled again. “I guess I’m kind of boring.”
***
A slow smile spread its way across her face. “I expect you to tell me if that’s at all possible. I don’t know why I need a flying car, but it sounds like fun. Even if cats don’t really like to be in the air. They do like high up places, though. So I guess there’s that.”
She grinned. “Yes! I am very cool. As anyone will tell you.” There was a slight shrug. “But I don’t mind being busy. It beats not being busy and I’m not all that good with boredom. Even if I did live as a cat for a very long time in the dreams.” But outside of that, she wasn’t too good at boredom. “Boring is all very subjective. I’m sure you’re perfectly interesting.”
***
Presto snapped off a salute. “You got it boss.” He grinned at her. “Well, if I get the magic, I can work on making it more of a pouncing, and leaping kind of thing… not sure how that would work, but eh, magic.” He nodded.
Presto chuckled.
“I am very boring. I work a lot, and for fun, do more of the same, most of the time. My dreams and meetings like this are the only crazy things I really do.”
***
Bast tried to imagine that and decided it sounded like a very unpleasant experience. It was one thing to fly and one thing to bounce around. “I think I might get seasick if we start doing bouncing things the entire time.” But the smile didn’t leave her face.
“I wouldn’t call this particularly crazy, but I guess it’s a little outside the ordinary. Perhaps you need a little more outside of the ordinary in your life.” She glanced over “Which, luckily for you, might happen with me as a friend. Welcome to your new life.”
***
Presto nodded. “Okay. No bouncing.” He nodded, listening to her.
“Oh? How so?” He chuckled, and glanced around, then at her. “I mostly meant meeting a beautiful woman and taking a ride in her hot car. A little crazier than my normal.”
***
Bast laughed again at that. “Well, I see you are a complimentary sort.” There was an amused hm’ing sound as she listened. “Like I said. Out of the ordinary. And to answer your question, I happen to be a goddess and I don’t mean that as just because I am particularly amazing. I mean that in a ‘I am actually a goddess’ sort of way. I can do all sorts of tricks. I have my own magic. Just none of it pertains to making cars bounce or fly.”
She missed her family the more that the dreams went on. She was sure that they were around somewhere, but she hadn’t found them. Maybe they were just not in the area. They didn’t have the dreams and they couldn’t know. She’d even take Khonsu. “But one day maybe I’ll show you a trick or two. Once I’m able to do more than summon cats.”
***
Presto flushed. “Just telling it like I see it.” he cocked his head to listen, and blinked. “A goddess? Wow.’ he blinked again, and was a little lost. How could she be a goddess? Unless… “You mean your dream self is a goddess?”
He settled back, confused, and unsure.
“Sure that would be cool. If I get my magic, I’d do the same for you.”
***
Bast found people that were easily flustered interesting. She’d never been particularly prone to being embarrassed, but then she’d been used to people telling her she was pretty and so she adjusted to it and always agreed. Some people were thrown off by it and others applauded her for it. “Yes. A goddess. In my dreams. Bast. Goddess of cats, protection, and various other things.” But she still considered herself here a goddess. She just was.
“It’s bound to happen sooner or later. This place is curious like that. Magic and presents and all.”
***
“Sounds amazing, and like the kind of goddess I could actually worship.” His words were spoken plainly and yet… he was, in another world, a wizard, heir to Merlin, future heir to Elminster, and even in this world, when he spoke truth, the world noticed. For just a second, even the wind stopped, and the world hushed. “Yeah. Definitely the kind I could stand behind.” And then the world went on, but changed. For a wizard’s intent was more than statement, it was promise, and commitment, and in a moment, a new wizard had given just that…
Not that Presto noticed a thing. “Maybe. I dunno. Sometimes, I think I am just a normal guy, with these dreams by mistake.”
***
Bast grinned, much like a cat that had gotten the milk. She loved followers, loved for people to believe in her and remember her. She never wanted to be one of those gods that was forgotten or went out of style...or was replaced somehow. She’d seen what happened and it wasn’t pleasant. “Welcome to my followers, then. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a magician following me. The House of Life said people couldn’t do that anymore. Buuuut they aren’t here to police anyone.”
Which was nice. She understood why, but magic was stronger when you followed the path of the gods. “Give it time, kitten. All things in time.”
***
Presto blinked at her, and stared… then grinned. Okay then. Ah. Her followers, huh? He canted his head to the side.
“How does one… follow you?” If he was getting himself into something, he should know it.
***
She made a thoughtful noise before saying, “Well, most people just keep me in mind. The magicians used to follow my path. I rewarded them with better combat magic skills and animal charming. Most specifically cats. I don’t think that will happen here, buuuut if you still just want to remember me and ask for help sometimes, I’m okay with that. Maybe look kindly upon cats and protect them from others who might try to hurt them. But never take a cat’s chance to fight away from it.”
She was quiet for a moment. “But there is a whole path. I could teach you. Maybe it will help, maybe not.”
***
“I’d like to learn of the path, if you are willing.” He looked at her and swallowed. What was he doing? He’d never… dreamed of actually following someone else, and this was crazy, and sudden. And yet…
He slowly nodded. She was… there was something about her.
“I think I can do all of that.”
***
“I’m always willing to help magicians.” It was also lonely without Sadie and Carter. She missed them. They were her family as much as her godly family. Neither of them followed her path as far as she knew. She had a champion, but not a magician. She didn’t know if it would work for him or not, but it was worth a try. “We can set up time whenever you have it.”
She offered him a small smile. “Good. Then I think we’ll get along just fine.”
***
Presto grinned. “Hopefully I will become a good enough magician to make it worth your while.” Even as he spoke to her, he felt like… he was somehow finally finding a missing piece of his life. Maybe not the last missing piece ever, but ‘a’ missing piece he had not even known he was wanting or looking for. There was something about this strange woman, something different that drew him, and not completely in a ‘I want to bang her seven ways from Sunday’ way, though there were elements of that. No, there was something else to her, and it drew him.
“I’m pretty flexible in my schedule…” Which really meant he made time. His life was insanely busy, but he made time for the important things, and this had just been upgraded to that level. Congratulations, Bast, you just scored an insanely wealthy, oddly dedicated, and eventually magically-powerful worshipper, even if he had no idea what he was completely, yet.
***
Bast didn’t have the same exact reaction to it, but she was happy enough. There were at least two people to keep her from disappearing into The House of Rest. She didn’t want to be there. She preferred to be out of the Duat in general. But magicians were hard to come by here. “I am sure you will be a competent Magician. But then it’s difficult not to be. Unless you don’t practice.” But even then...she wasn’t sure you could be an absolutely terrible magician. She would be there to guide him. She may throw in lessons like cat grooming or napping, but that was only because napping was her favorite and cat grooming was very important.
“I’m a little less flexible, but considering I’m only security detail at the moment, I guess I have more wiggle room than I normally would. So I’m sure we can set up a schedule that works for both of us.”
