Anna had made plans to spend some time with Tas. He was such a good friend, and he was usually so upbeat! Also, she felt bad that she hadn’t been to see him much since his Dream friend died. They were both busy, right? School was starting and whatever else. But now she really regretted not hanging out with him more. She could really use some of his optimism.
So she headed to his place, without the normal smile, the usual bounce in her step. She was even wearing bland clothes and hadn’t done up her hair or make-up. She knocked on the door, and just stood there, waiting for him to answer. No checking facebook or valarnet, no humming or even smiling. This was a very sad penguin.
Tas opened up the front door of his apartment, excited to see Anna for the day. She’d been there for him when Flint had died in his dreams, and while Tas still felt really sad about that, he sure had felt better after they’d built that pillow fort.
Of course, when he flung his door open, he was a little surprised when he spotted Anna there. Something was wrong though he wasn’t quite sure what it was. “Hi Anna!” Tas said cheerfully. “I just need to put on my shoes and we can go! Where do you want to go today? I was thinking maybe we could get some ice cream first, and then maybe we can go to Disneyland!” Tas had found some great ways in so that he didn’t have to pay for the way too expensive tickets.
Ninety nine perfect of the time, Anna would be thrilled to go to Disneyland. She was a Disney Princess, after all. But today she wasn’t really feeling the magic. Sure, she’d go. Maybe being in the Happiest Place on Earth would raise her spirits a bit. But she wasn’t bouncing at the idea. “Okay. Maybe we can get a frappuccino instead of ice cream?” She suggested, feeling that a little caffeine with the sugar might help more than sugar alone.
Tas frowned thoughtfully to himself. No, something was definitely wrong with Anna. “Oh yes, I’d love to go for a frappe!” Tas said cheerfully. His shoes on his feet, he closed the door behind him (leaving it unlocked as usual), and then looped his arm through Anna’s. “Is there anything else you wanted to do today? Maybe go play in the park, or sit somewhere and talk?”
Anna took a moment to think about it as the pair of them walked together away from his front door. Hey, Disneyland sounded like a pretty good idea, to be honest. It might raise her spirits a bit. “No, I think… I think Disneyland would be great.” She thought a trip down Space Mountain sounded just about right. The right amount of screaming and twists and turns. So long as they didn’t go to the Frozen stage show. Because that would be weird.
“You want me to drive?” Anna asked, pulling out her keys.
“Yes please!” Tas said cheerfully. He’d never learned how to drive himself. He mostly just relied on rides from strangers to get where he needed to go. Though, even if he had learned how to drive before, he was pretty sure that that his new, shorter stature would make it rather difficult these days. “Is everything okay?” he asked Anna as they made the way to her car. “You look a little sad.”
“I bumped into my ex,” Anna explained. “When I was out supposed to meet Wash, and um… he said some things that really got to me. So I’ve been thinking. About… you know. Everything. Questioning everything.” Anna wasn’t sure how else to explain it without sounding absolutely insane. She was hoping that stuffing her face with ice cream shaped like Mickey Mouse’s head and going on a few rollercoasters over and over would distract her.
Tas frowned. He often questioned everything, though that was because the curiosity that marked the kender race was strong in him. But questioning everything was good if it made you sad, which it obviously was doing. “Sometimes people say things without thinking,” Tas said. “Mostly because a lot of people don’t bother thinking. But I bet everything he said wasn’t true. After all, you’re pretty wonderful!”
Anna’s smile went much more genuine at Tas’s words. She bumped her shoulder into his gently. “Thanks, Tas. I think you’re pretty great, too.” She unlocked the car with a button on her fob, then climbed in on her side. “I have some really great people in my life. I love my friends, I love my family, I don’t need negative people hanging around me.” She said, trying to convince herself more than him. “I just need more trips to Disneyland.” Then she gave him a smile. “I’m really looking forward to today. Thank you.”
“The only people you need in your life are people who make you smile!” Tas said cheerily, hopping into the Anna’s car. “The best thing to do with the others is just kick them in the shin. Really hard.” Granted, that was about the most Tas could reach to kick these days. He didn’t mind being small, but sometimes he wished he was back to being 5’4” again.
Anna didn’t much care about Tas’s height. So long as they could still ride all the rides at Disneyland? That was all she cared about. “I don’t know about that,” Anna spoke through a chuckle, her cheeks going a little pink. “I don’t think I’m much prone to physical violence. Well, unless someone tried to kill me or my sister, or something. Then I could…” She lifted her fist and mimed punching someone right in the nose. Then she turned on the car and pulled away from the curb. “I think I want a giant turkey leg, and a Dole Whip… and I want to go to Jedi Training.”
