Azula had her arm around Ty Lee’s waist, enjoying the feel of her body and warmth close by. Okay, things hadn’t quite gone as well as she would have liked. That little water bending bitch...Ugh.
She was trying to be a good person, so she’d only burned her a little, and that had been entirely due to her temper. She almost felt a little guilty. Almost. Fortunately, the other two girls disappearing had proven to be a good distraction. They’d left through one of the alternate entrances, long after things had started to die down.
She let go of Ty Lee as they approached the limo, “Where the hell is my stupid brother and his fiance?”
There were plenty of distractions that night, really. Ty Lee had a hard time keeping track of everything, what with all the people watching and the glowing portals, waterbending, firebending, Jubilee's fireworks, the various drunken people... and she'd completely lost track of Mai and Zuko.
"I don't know..." She shook her head. She looked around the place like that might somehow reveal the two of them, "I haven't seen them for a few minutes now, actually. Maybe they snuck off."
It would be great for them if they had. Mai had looked good, but Ty Lee was beginning to tell the fake smile from the completely genuine ones. Her friend had spent the night schmoozing, but entirely miserable.
"Maybe they snuck off to screw," Azula agreed, almost hopefully. She still hoped they could be repaired. And it would look good to Ozai. And Mai could use the good lay.
She turned to face Ty Lee, "Maybe that will give us some time for ourselves." She was clearly trying to calm down and put things behind her.
It was the kind of completely inappropriate thing to do at these gatherings that Mai would never have allowed, but Zuko would have tried to convince her to do anyway. Ty Lee was completely in agreement with Azula about this - she hoped they were off enjoying themselves somewhere. They desperately needed it.
"Oh you want time alone with me, do you?" Ty Lee looked up at Azula, the expression on her face a mixture of mock obliviousness and teasing amusement, "I can't imagine why you'd want that. I thought maybe I'd start dating Jubilee, since she and I are spending so much time together lately."
Azula narrowed her eyes, "It's for your own safety, until certain matters are dealt with. Then I'll make you mine."
She paused, then added, a little more softly, "And make myself yours."
She reached for Ty Lee's hand, suddenly intent to remind her that her feelings weren't just sexual or dominating. That she was trying so hard to do right by the woman she loved so much.
The black car with no headlights came out of the night, it's engine revving as it accelerated.
Ty Lee had been in the middle of squeezing Azula's hand, a soft expression on her face that let Azula know how much she was looking forward to moving back home, and the mutual claiming that would happen when they did.
There was barely a moment's notice that the car was coming; the sound of the engine and the smell of burning rubber hit Ty Lee's senses, and her absolutely first reaction was to push Azula backwards further, out of the way of the vehicle's path. It crashed into her a split-second later.
"I love-" Azula was shoved backwards, slamming into the limo. She didn't notice anything, except the horrible sight of Ty Lee being struck by the car. Her girl spun up, over the hood and crashed down on the other side.
The world stopped. Ty Lee lay broken and bleeding, the car speeding away into the night.
Her fire melted the asphalt beneath the limo, causing it to sink several inches before the tires popped from the heat, but Azula was already gone, rocketing through the air after the car like a missile. It took her several miles, but she caught up to it.
She screamed, a stream of blue flame rushing from her mouth, igniting the rear of the car. The gas tank caught fire, and the explosion knocked her back. Dazed, she picked herself up and shot back towards Ty Lee. Scorches marked her passage. She was kneeling next to Ty Lee, unsure how to hold her or where to touch her or even if she could be moved. Or even if she was alive.
Zuko and Mai emerged, disheveled, from the same exit as Ty Lee and Azula earlier. Zuko stopped short, taking in the scene, then rushed over. Azula looked positively deranged, and for a brief moment he wondered if she'd attacked Ty Lee.
Shock and guilt registered in Mai's sharp eyes as they swept over the scene, trying to take in every detail they could. She was disheveled and had previously been in a mood that she could almost describe as happy. Now all of that had just turned into more crushing guilt. Her and Zuko had been making the best of things. If they'd been out here when this happened, though, whatever it was that had happened might have been prevented.
Scorch marks littered the ground, lit by the lights in the parking lot, and Mai noticed the state of the limo as well. She couldn't be certain it was Azula that had started this, though it was clear that Azula had finished it.
Her hand was already dialing 911.
On the ground, Ty Lee was only half-conscious. She tried to move, but her head was swimming with pain and the entire world felt like it was spinning, too. She could hear Azula nearby, and tried to take the woman's hand... say something to make her feel better. All that really came out was a gurgling sound.
Zuko's brain caught up to what had happened, and he scolded himself for doubting his sister like that. He saw the fire, and wondered where it had led to. He could assume Azula had...
"Get the hell out of here," He ordered her.
Azula looked up, her expression fraught with anger, guilt and genuine fear, "What? No! I can't leave her!"
"Do you want to get arrested for whatever you did? GO!" Zuko was more insistent now, almost commanding, "Or do you want to not be able to see her again?"
That allowed Azula to calm down enough to see reason. Or at least see what he was getting at. She squeezed Ty Lee's hand, "I'll see you soon, I have to check on the chinchilla."
Zuko, meanwhile, was sending a text to Neena. They'd need some sort of cover up for this. He'd also have to contact Nick Fury, as well.
Azula kissed Ty Lee on the forehead lightly, her eyes squeezed shut so as to not memorize the way she looked now. Then she was gone.
The phone call to 911 had been placed, and Mai put her phone away, making sure they weren't being observed by anyone and that Azula was safely away before approaching. She squatted down, then, and gently took Ty Lee's hand in hers.
"An ambulance is coming. Hold on until then," she whispered. It wasn't a request, though the woman whose hand she was holding couldn't hear her right now. Meeting Zuko eyes, she frowned, "There are going to be questions."
"I know," Zuko said, looking at the melted asphalt. There were too many people coming out to see what the commotion was for him to do anything, but there wasn't much he could do, except hope Neena and Fury could come up with a plan.
"But I can tell you exactly who planned this."
"One of these days I'll have a matching set of that man's eyes," Mai promised. There was such conviction to her words that there was no way anyone was doubting how very much she believed that.
She looked around, trying to formulate her own plan, "There's enough marks here to look like the impact might have shook something on the car loose that sparked something, which then started a fire..."
It was a long shot, really. Maybe people in this area were getting used to odd happenings though. Green guys in the city, Iron Man flying around. Who knew what was next, after the glowing portal incident and Korra with her magical punch bending abilities.
Meanwhile, inside, Neena got a text message that she read over with a blank expression. She'd wondered what that small commotion by the punch bowl had been about, but at the time she'd been more amused by the drunken antics and Wrex being awkward to pay it much attention.
She tucked her phone away and made her goodbye excuses to a drunken Tony, then surreptitiously made her way out the back door, and took the scene in. "Fuck."
Glancing at her, Zuko just nodded his head. Whether in acknowledgement of his father's ultimate fate or in her idea on what happened with the fire was up in the air.
He then looked over at Neena as the wail of the ambulance got closer, "It was a hit and run. It looks like something got shook loose in the impact which started a fire."
That something might well be his sisters sanity.
"I see," Neena commented, while coming over to take stock of the damage to the gymnast on the ground. She tried not to wince overly much, though it generally looked bad from where she was standing. She was glad the ambulance was almost there.
Neena took in the scene for herself, deciding to give points to the younger couple for coming up with the idea of 'something shaking loose'. It looked like something had shaken loose that had then set fire to everything, of course, but hey.
From the ground, Mai let out a sigh, "I have no explanation for the Limo, however."
Neena shrugged a shoulder, "Some punks were on the scene before the hit and run and slashed the Limo's tires. Probably so they could hit up the stranded partygoers for cash when they exited. The hit and run scattered them."
"I could kiss you," Zuko muttered, then realized Mai was probably still a bit miffed over the Katara thing. Oops.
"Mai, why don't you go with Ty Lee while I stay here with Neena to answer questions." Zuko trusted Mai to defend Ty Lee. He also knew his father wouldn't make a move with Mai in the ambulance with her, whereas he might be more willing to risk hurting his son.
The plan was tactically sound, and Mai nodded her head. She was willing to put the comment he made behind her, though later on she might just ask him HOW very well he'd gotten along with Katara. She didn't need another surprise like hearing about him and Ty Lee had been.
"I'm sure you could, but I'm also sure your woman would cut me, and my husband would melt everyone's faces off if he found out," Neena pointed out, though she, also, nodded her head over Zuko's plan.
Then the Ambulance pulled up, and the next few minutes were spent dealing with getting Ty Lee ready to go.
And then Ty Lee and Mai were gone, and Zuko glanced at Neena, muttering a thanks under his breath. He owed this woman so much that he doubted he'd ever be able to repay the debt.
