A year with Hanna. Hard to believe. It felt like he had known her forever, but then the year had also flown by. He had gone to bed stoked about their anniversary. Dinner at the same restaurant as their first date, with a few surprises for Hanna in store, namely presents.
But then of course dreams happened. He already knew their plan had failed. He really should have known to check the damn floorboard. What the hell was wrong with him? This new dream was all about getting Hanna back, which of course started with finding her body hanging from the fucking bell tower. Thank god it wasn’t actually Hanna’s body. Just a life size doll wearing a very realistic Hanna mask with a message.
’You’ve got 24 hours to give me Charlotte’s real killer or Hanna dies. Tick tock bitches.’
The rest of the dream had consisted of trying to find the killer. Caleb had gotten the proof to AD just before the deadline, but he had yet to see Hanna. He had no idea if she was dead or alive.
He woke up in a sweat. Worried about his girlfriend. He glanced over to see her still in bed next to him. Thank God. Caleb wrapped an arm around her, but something was off. She was cold. Caleb shot up, turning on the light to examine further. This wasn’t Hanna. This was the doll.
Caleb was officially in panic mode. It was one thing to get an item from the dreams, but for it to be where Hanna usually slept? And where the hell was Hanna? She couldn’t be -
No. He wouldn’t even think about it. Instead he jumped out of bed and began frantically looking for his girlfriend. “Hanna?!” he yelled out, his voice filled with panic. “Hanna?!”
The thing that sucked most about the dreams was waiting for the next one. At least recently. The whole being dragged away and then knocked out and then just...waiting? Yeah. That definitely wasn’t something that Hanna was enjoying. But when she’d gone to sleep the night before, it was the last thing on her mind. While she still had classes in the morning, it was her year anniversary with Caleb and so she was excited.
At some point, Techno had started whining though which led to Hanna waking up. At first she had wanted to try and ignore the dog but once she was up, well….
“Fine fine, Techno.” The comment was said quietly as she pulled on some yoga pants instead of the pajama shorts she’d been wearing and then a jacket. Finding the leash, Hanna grabbed her keys, attached Techno to the leash and it was heading out for a walk. And really? She didn’t mind the walks because she liked getting out and it was exercise.
Once the walk and all was done, she headed back to the apartment and blinked as she heard Caleb calling out for her. What? Worried, she opened the door, leash still in hand.
“Caleb? What is it?”
It hadn’t even occurred to Caleb that Techno also wasn’t around. He hadn’t even barked when Caleb began frantically searching. And when he finally heard Hanna come in he didn’t even acknowledge his dog. Instead just ran over to Hanna enveloping her in a hug. A wave of relief wash over him. Techno sat there staring up at his owners.
“I had the worst dream,” Caleb said his arms still wrapped around her, not ready to let her go just yet. “And I woke up to -“ he stopped, not sure how much he should say. She would dream it eventually, probably soon given how their dreams seemed to be fairy in sync lately. Only who knew what she would dream. Who knew what AD was doing to her. He frowned tightening his grip on her. “I can’t lose you, Han.”
And suddenly she was caught up in a very tight hug and all Hanna could do was return the hug. It wasn’t like she minded, but it was still rather unexpected.
“Pretty sure I’m usually the one with the vivid nightmares and needing to make sure you’re okay.”
Okay, so she was trying to lighten the mood. Partially because Hanna said random things, but also the part of her that was really worried about what was to come next. Because it wasn’t like Hanna knew what was to come in the dreams. She knew she’d been taken, knocked out. Whatever was next? That she didn’t know and given what had happened in the Dollhouse? Well… she was more worried than she let on.
“You won’t. So long as you let me breathe.”
Because tightening grips led to needing to breathe. And to just let Caleb know she was there and okay. Not like she was getting back to sleep now since it was clear Caleb wasn’t. But that was fine.
“Sorry,” Caleb mumbled loosening his grip around her. He kissed the top of her head before fully pulling away. Now Techno wanted attention jumping up on Caleb for his own hug. Caleb patted the dog’s head before telling him to get down.
He turned his attention back to Hanna, not really wanting to let her out of his sight at the moment. “I’m sorry,” he said again. “I just - the dreams. I hate them.” Understatement of the century. “You sure you’re okay?” he asked again eyes searching hers for any hint that something might be wrong. “You haven’t dreamed past AD taking you through the fucking floorboards?”
“It’s fine. Really.” And it was. Yes, Hanna was worried because it did take a lot to get Caleb that shaken from the dreams. The only other time had been when he had dreamt about the girls getting kidnapped to the dollhouse but even then…
As Techno got down, Hanna undid his leash and put it away before returning her attention to Caleb since he was talking again.
“Yeah. Same.” And it was why she had wanted to keep Emily and Spencer from the network, not like that had worked out. “But yes, I’m sure I’m okay. No new dreams.” And while part of her just wanted the limbo to end, for the most part? She didn’t want to know what was to come. Especially given Caleb’s reaction.
“Good,” Caleb said more relief washing over him. Well good that she was okay. He wasn’t sure if it was good or bad that she had new dreams. He was going to go with good though. Whatever AD was doing with her he wanted to protect her from it.
“Maybe you shouldn’t go into our room,” Caleb added. He didn’t really want her to see the Hanna doll. But if she wanted to see it, well he’d understand.
Hanna could go with good. She was anxious and just wanted it over with, but if Caleb’s reaction was anything to go off of…. But she would cross that road when she got to it.
“....Yeah, because that doesn’t sound ominous.”
Really, who says don’t go in the room and expects the person not to go into the room? Especially since she was worried about Caleb? Yeah. Curiousity. It wasn’t always a good thing.
“Well, dream gifts usually aren’t a good thing,” he frowned. The only gift Caleb had gotten that he actually liked was the laptop. Everything else was just bad. Nothing compared to this. “It’s worse than the gravestone.”
“Okay, point.” Because really, more often than not? The gifts sucked as they were just reminders of blackmail and stalking. Some things didn’t but for the most part… Though Caleb saying it was worse than the gravestone? Yeah, if he was trying to keep her from seeing what it was? That was the last thing to say. Because to be worse than the gravestone….
Which meant that Hanna went to the room and could only stare in shock at the lifesize doll that looked like her. And was wearing the clothing she’d been wearing when she was taken.
“What the….”
Yeah. Okay. Definitely worse than the gravestone and it just led to more questions on what was to come. But the dreams didn’t feel over, so it wasn’t like she had died. Unless that would be her next dream. Which…. Not thinking about that right now.
Caleb followed behind Hanna into the room. He knew she would be confused and while he wasn’t sure how much he should spoil her with, he had to give some sort of explanation. “So I haven’t seen you yet,” Caleb informed her. “AD wanted us to think you were dead, left that hanging from the bell tower.” That damn bell tower was never good news. “And left a message that we needed to find Charlotte’s killer in 24 hours.”
He hadn’t checked the doll to see if it had the same recording. But checking with Hanna around didn’t seem like a good idea. “It ended with me dropping of evidence of the killer,” he frowned. Why couldn’t he have dreamed farther. Known what happened to Hanna? Seen that she was okay? But then when were the dreams ever that nice?
Well, it was Hanna, she was the type to walk head first into something she shouldn’t because she wanted answers and was too used to danger that she didn’t think it through. And the fact that she was worried. Still, she had no idea on what to make of the fake her. Or doll. With a recording.
“Of course….”
Which meant freaking demented Emoji A knew she wasn’t the actual killer which okay, good. But where did that leave her? She had known the risks going into the plan but that didn’t make her any less anxious about it.
“Some motivation since we couldn’t figure it out before…” Letting out a slow breath, Hanna debated what to do. Which meant pacing. Not like there was anything to do. Mostly it was just nervous energy.
Techno made his way into the bedroom, pacing along side Hanna. Caleb bent down to give him a pet, giving him some time to figure out what to say. “We’ll figure it out,” Caleb assured her. “I mean we already did, proof and everything.” Although part of him honestly doubted that Ali was the killer, it should still be enough to get Hanna back.
“Some anniversary,” Caleb muttered. Maybe they could still try and salvage it, but the mood was definitely ruined.
