Vanessa hadn’t realised that Tessa and Clary knew each other, Tessa understood that Vanessa’s clients may not want their identities known so she never asked who she had coming. And simply allowed them to enter the shop and go to the little back room Vanessa used, there were a couple of small signs up to help people locate it of course but otherwise it was fairly low key.
Wearing a slightly more modern version of her dream outfit was the only thing Vanessa did, she didn’t wear a veil or light the room dimly. She was offering tarot services not a circus trick after all.
Clary pushed the door open to Tessa’s bookshop and headed in from the slightly colder street. Smiling at the girls behind the counter, they pointed her in the right direction when she mentioned what she had come for. Knocking on the door to the backroom, Clary waited to be called in.
“Come on in” Vanessa called when she heard the knock on the door, “Hello Clary it’s a pleasure to meet you. Please come in and take a seat” she smiled in greeting.
Clary headed in the door and smiled at Vanessa, reaching out a hand to greet the other woman. “Hi, Vanessa, right? How are you? What a lovely dress,” she complimented as she moved to put her bag down on the floor and sit opposite her.
“That’s right. I’m very well thank you, and thank you for the compliment. I try not to go too gypsy palm reader” she joked, “How are you today?” she asked as they sat, “Can I offer you a drink?”
“Oh no, not at all, you look incredibly classy,” Clary smiled. “I’m ok today thanks, it’s been a crazy couple of months though. I could murder a cup of coffee if that’s ok?” she asked.
“Absolutely. As long as you don’t mind cheaty machine coffee” she smiled waiting for Clary’s agreement before moving to make one, “It seems a little at odds with what I do I’m sure but technology makes some things so much easier”
“Not at all, I’m used to that sort of coffee from the college cafeteria,” Clary joked. “Absolutely, god knows what I’d do without a coffee machine!” she laughed.
“I know I’d go mad I think. I really believe my ability to function hangs on caffeine” she moved to set the drink down in front of Clary and then pushed the cards towards her. “Whenever you are ready pick up the cards and shuffle them in your hands thinking of everything you want to know at the same time” she instructed.
“Ok,” Clary smiled, rubbing her hands on her thighs and licking her lips before picking the deck up and shuffling. “My best friend Simon taught me how to shuffle for his board games. He was keen on getting the cards randomised as much as possible,” she grinned, starting to deal the cards into piles like Simon had shown her.
Vanessa laughed softly, “This isn’t quite like that, it’s more important that you handle them. It’s all about your energy and letting the cards pick up on that, they’ll sort themselves out how they need to be”
“Ah, ok,” Clary quirked a smile and picked the cards up again. “Sorry, I’ve never used cards unless it’s with Simon,” she laughed and started shuffling the cards, thinking about the things she wanted answered; how things with her studies might pan out, her relationship with Jace and where it was going and her future beyond college.
“That’s okay, don’t worry about it. I’ll keep you in mind though, if I ever need a good shuffling technique” she added with a smile to ease Clary’s worry. “Whenever you’re ready lay out three cards in a row and then two additional cards, one above and one below the middle card”
Clary laughed and dealt out the cards as she was directed. The three cards in the row came out as The Lovers, Queen of Pentacles and the Ace of Cups with the Wheel of Fortune taking place at the top of the spread and the Ace of Wands at the bottom. Clary smiled and leaned over to look at the images on the cards. “I’ve always loved the artwork on tarot cards. In my Dreams my mom painted a set for our neighbour,” she said, picking up the Lovers card and smiling at it.
“Okay” Vanessa said as Clary laid out the cards, “So the spread we’ve used today tries to focus your thoughts and obviously to inform you about where things could be heading for yourself. This card” she pointed to the Queen of Pentacles in the middle of it all, “represents the overall theme of the cards if you like and this one in particular can relate to security and opulence. It seems most of the cards here focus on your relationship” she smiled, “The Lovers represents attraction and trials overcome, that would be the past influences so I would suggest that you had a period of difficulty which you overcame together and have found yourselves in a more stable and strong position”
“Yep, that sounds like me and Jace,” Clary grinned. “We uh...it sounds completely messed up, but there was a time we...well, that we thought we might be related. There was someone in our Dreams who made us believe we were brother and sister but he was just trying to break us is all,” she explained. “We’re not related in anyway,” she reassured Vanessa. “Plus it’s Jace and he’s always getting into scrapes and stuff,” she shrugged.
“Oh I understand how the dreams can be disconcerting even in the waking world. I’m very glad you discovered you weren’t related” Vanessa said with a grin, “So far so good then. Okay, when it comes to the Ace of Cups that tends to be a sign of contentment and fertility. Planning for the future” Vanessa smiled, so far it was a very positive reading which she was glad of. “The wheel of fortune being placed where it is shows future potential and this card in particular represents unexpected luck and good fortune”
Clary felt a blush rise in her cheeks at the mention of fertility and planning for the future. “Well, I don’t know about that,” she gave a nervous laugh and scratched at the back of her head. “We’re not anywhere near thinking about that yet. At least I don’t think we are…” she trailed off.
“Well the Ace of Wands placed here can mean creation and invention. It represents family, a beginning. Perhaps the cards are just letting you know that you’re on the right path for that” Vanessa said, trying to ease Clary’s obvious discomfort. The cards weren’t talking about something happening next week, they were pointing to a long term future. Offering reassurance that this was exactly where Clary was supposed to be.
“I uh...I guess I’d never really thought that far ahead, y’know?” Clary gave a little nervous laugh and tucked some loose hair behind her ear. “I’ve got so much going on with college that all…that, seems so far away. But uh, creation and invention? That could be me and my work maybe? I’m studying art at college and I’m trying a couple of mediums, no pun intended, that I’ve not worked with before?” she asked hoping to move the reading on from fertility and the future. She and Jace were too young for kids...weren’t they?
“That is certainly a possibility” Vanessa said, though to her it definitely seemed like the cards were pointing to relationships. She wondered if Clary’s thoughts had drifted to her boyfriend and their family when she had been shuffling, that would certainly explain it. “How are your studies going? Are you having fun trying out new mediums?” she asked.
“Good thanks. I’ve decided to try out photography this year. Maybe some collage, I’ve not done that since I was a kid,” Clary laughed. “I just feel like I can experiment a bit more this year for some reason,” she shrugged.
“I don’t really have much of an eye for photography but I used to love collage as a child” Vanessa smiled, “I think it shows your confidence in your chosen subject is growing which is never a bad thing”
“Yeah, see I think the collage thing is going to be interesting coz when you think about it, it’s nearly always a childhood thing. I want to see if I can make it...an adult thing I guess,” Clary explained. “So um...do the cards tell you anything else?” she asked cautiously, looking down at the spread.
“I look forward to seeing what you can do” Vanessa said before looking back at the cards, “Honestly it seems to be focusing on your relationship with your boyfriend, perhaps unconscious thoughts and projections? The cards simply pick up on your feelings and try to give you little hints for the future if they can”
“Thanks,” Clary smiled at her. “I’m hoping to put together a collection for an artshow in winter, maybe you’d like to come along?” she asked with a shrug, trying to avoid thinking too much about the reading.
“Oh I would love to. My partner has an interest in art so I’m sure he’d come along too, if that’s okay?” she asked.
“Absolutely! The more the merrier,” Clary grinned excitedly. “I’ll let you know the dates and venue and you can bring as many people as you like. I’m planning on inviting Tessa and the guys I live with as well, and I really appreciate any support people are willing to give me,” she explained.
“Thank you, I’m already looking forward to it. You deserve all the support you have and more I am certain of it” Vanessa said, she knew that Clary worked hard and had a passion for her work.
