Shaw had spent a good week or so looking for a gym to attend when she wasn’t at the training centre. It was strange being the one giving directions to young aspiring MMA fighters rather than the one fighting herself. She still wasn’t sure it was for her but she knew sometimes she was in no state to fight, not after the dreams which made her feel like she hadn’t slept at all.
She couldn’t deny liking the life she had in them though, despite everything. Taking up her stance she threw a few well placed punches to the bag as she went through her routine.
There was two kinds of training. There was the kind that took her out where people weren’t were where Laura did things no civilized person should see, and then there was the more normal kind of training. She didn’t much like most exercise equipment, but she did like to lift weights and hit bags.
Today she had a small audience as she benched a heavy load. Five one and somewhat thin, she was still pushing three hundred pounds. While she couldn’t match her father’s strength, the passing of his mutation on to her still meant she could probably go a bit higher. but then people might really start asking questions. She set the weights down and sat up. One man was staring wide-eyed, and she said as she passed him, “I eat my spinach. It is good for your health.”
Weights and punch bags were much more Shaw’s style too, she did the treadmill when she needed an extra cardio boost but generally she stuck to what she was good at.
Snorting at the girls response to being watched by all the guys, some with admiration, some with want and some with jealousy. It was amusing to say the least, “Even eating a ton of spinach won’t help most of them” she said indicating the men with a small smirk on her face.
“No, not really. They are very weak.” Laura didn’t really seem to have a volume control, that or she just didn’t care. Probably the latter. Let them nurse their egos. She grinned, nodding at Shaw. “They would need a lot of spinach.”
Shaw respected that, she was one who didn’t care what others thought either. Other peoples feelings never really entered Shaw’s head, she just didn’t have the capacity to care too much about it.
“Shaw” she said introducing herself, “Don’t think I’ve seen you around before but then I’ve not been coming here for long”
“I don’t usually come here, my regular gym was full.” And her girlfriend was busy with a lot of things so she had more time on her hands. She held out her hand. “I’m Laura Kinney.”
Her mother’s name was important to her. It was one of the reasons she hadn’t changed her last name to Howlett.
“That would explain it” Shaw said shaking the girls hand, “Always good to meet someone else who can out press the posing boys” she added, referring to the men who always had their tops off and loitered around the weights without actually doing much.
They were all posers, Laura agreed. She might get a secret joy out of making them look like chumps. “Do they really think that is attractive?” Laura had a type: emo hot-headed guys and super-cheerful and/or innocent girls. They were none of the above.
Who wouldn’t get a little joy out of that really though? Shaw definitely did, whether it was kicking their ass or drinking them under the table she liked showing them up. “Probably and it’s a sad reflection on our sex that it works enough for them to continue”
“People can be...shallow.” Laura looked in their direction again. She couldn’t imagine that doing anything more than boring her or disgusting her. “Which is fine, but that is not me.”
“Me either. So at least we know there is still hope I guess” Shaw said with a half smile and a shrug, “So are you in the forces or just naturally athletic?” she asked curiously.
“Naturally athletic,” Laura replied. “It is a benefit of...good genes. Among other things.” It was generally impolite to tell a stranger one was a clone designed to be a killing machine and a weapon for assassination. She nodded at Shaw, who was pretty impressively built herself.
“Sounds lucky. Mine’s a mixture. Always been a bit of a tomboy but joining the army really honed that. And now I can kick almost anybody’s ass” she grinned, it surprised most people since Shaw wasn’t the most...tall person in the world. But small things packed a big punch, at least in her case anyway.
Beware the short women, they will break you. Laura nodded. She had that look in her eyes, the kind that only someone who’s killed might have. A soldier, in her own way, even if never formally. “Only almost?”
“I’m good but I’m not crazy enough to think I’m completely unbeatable especially with some of the weird ass people around here” she smirked, she couldn’t do much against super powers after all.
“Anyone can be taken down. No one is without weakness.” Laura tilted her head. “Even Superman had his Kryptonite.” An achilles heel existed for everyone, it was just a matter of finding it and exploiting it.
“If you have time to find it, sometimes time is not on your side. But thankfully I’ve always come out on top so far. I don’t have any plans for that to change anytime soon” Shaw said with a grin.
Laura just nodded. “Improvisation is useful.” She’d had to do it far too often for her liking. Though sometimes ‘improvise’ meant ‘pop claws and go in swinging’ which was more her father’s style, but it got the job done. “What do you do?”
“I’m ex-military but then I became an MMA fighter and now I’m moving into coaching other girls in that career” Shaw said, it was taking some adjustment. Shaw wasn’t the most tactful person in the world after all.
Laura tilted her head, thinking about that. It was actually kind of appealing, but with her above-average strength, she would have an unfair advantage. “I am going into social services. To help girls who are runaways or forced into prostitution.” It was important to her. In her dreams, that had been her. Even in her waking life, that had nearly been her.
“Yeah? That’s a pretty good thing to do. I’m sure the girls you’ll help will appreciate your support” Shaw said because she’d seen the results of prostitution and it wasn’t pretty. Girls needed all the help they needed not to end up on that path and sometimes all it took was just one helping hand.
“Thank you. It’s important to me.” She didn’t need to say why, nor did she want to. Someone had helped her once and she wanted to pay it forward.
“Better than doing something you had and resenting it” Shaw said not pressing for more, she wasn’t that sort of person. “Anyway I should let you get back to your workout, gotta show the guys up” she grinned.
“We should show them up together,” Laura suggested. She figured they could shame the shallow men into submission. And thought it could be fun.
“You’re on” Shaw said with a nod, this was definitely going to be fun.
