When Virgil woke up with his powers, it had been the greatest five minutes of his life. And then he’d shorted out his phone when he tried to text Richie about it. But he’d fixed his phone, and had spent the next few days practicing. He was lucky in that his Static costume had come through the dreams too. No skintight leggings for him. Blue, somewhat baggy pants, a white shirt with a black encircled lightning bolt in the middle, a blue trenchcoat with yellow trim. To complete the look was a white mask and a pair of yellow goggles. It was one of the coolest superhero costumes he’d ever seen, and he’d seen a lot. He didn’t really have the funds to make a new one from scratch, so having it there was nice.
Patrolling was a bit harder. He’d found a manhole cover to fly around on, making sure to take one from where no one was likely to fall or drive through the open manhole, and flew around. He wasn’t really sure how he was supposed to find crime, but find it he did. A little static cling, and he managed to stick two of the would be robbers to the wall. He was rather pleased with his work, and stood admiring it for a few moments, completely oblivious to the third robber who’d managed to sneak up behind him with a gun.
Kate was patrolling alone. Elsa did have a day job, and honestly sometimes it was nice to not be distracted by the costume they’d made for Orange County’s resident Ice Queen. She’d always worked better alone and was still trying to adjust to working with a partner, though that was both with and without the mask.
She crouched on a roof top, the hackles on her neck raising from electricity in the air. Interesting. He was a bit of an amatuer but he had talent. She flicked her wrist, sending a batarang whirling down. It knocked the gun from the robber’s hand and then embedded itself in the wall next to Virgil’s head.
Kate dropped down, landing with both feet on the back of the robber’s torso, cape flapping elegantly behind her in all her red and black glory. She smiled at him, bright red lips on a pale face under a black mask. “Not bad, but you need better situational awareness.”
What, Batwoman had a certain aesthetic.
Was that a shuriken? Was someone throwing bat shaped shuriken at him now?! He whirled around on his feet, already calling to his hand a ball of electricity, only to see a woman dressed like in a bat costume standing in front of him. She seemed friendly enough with the tips, but it wasn’t until she noticed the third crook underfoot that he decided she’d probably come to help.
“Thanks,” he said, a little warily, though he lowered his hand. “I’m new at this.”
“I can tell, kid.” Like all the bat folk, her eyes were covered with a white material. In her case there were advanced displays and read outs. They were currently going off the charts on energy. “What do I call you?” There was always a name. “Because I don’t think Lightning Boy sounds that good.”
“Name's Static. I put a shock to your system,” he said proudly, snapping his fingers so that a spark crackled between them. “And you are… the human bat?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Kate laughed, folding her arms. “I like that one. I’m Batwoman. It’s a lot less clever, but there’s a whole bunch of us with a similar theme where I come from.”
“A whole bat colony?” Virgil asked, grinning. This was awesome. His first official patrol and he’d already run into another superhero. This was so much better than his dreams, when he had to keep Dakota safe from all the other bang babies all on his lonesome.
Behind him, one of the would-be robbers managed to peel himself from the wall with just a little bit of a struggle, and then went for his weapon.
“I know at least three of them who would stab you for calling it that,” Kate replied, her grin mischievous. She saw the movement over Static’s shoulder, and tried to push him out of the way. Her suit was bulletproof - his probably wasn’t.
Well, these bat folk didn’t sound very friendly, and Virgil was about to say as much when Batwoman pushed him out of the way and he heard the shot of a gun. “No!” he exclaimed loudly, and brought up both hands. The shooter and his gun both slammed back into the wall, and with a second thought Virgil added the third man that Batwoman had knocked out to their number. He was woozy, feeling nearly completely drained, but he kept them pinned there as he turned to Batwoman, expecting the worst.
Kate was picking herself up. There was a marking on her chest, just on the corner of the red bat symbol, but otherwise she appeared unharmed. “I’m going to feel that in the morning. Are you okay?” She came over, putting a hand on his shoulder. “My suit is bullet proof. An advanced polymer.” Times like this she felt like the price had been worth it for that suit upgrade.
Virgil gave a heavy sigh of relief when Batwoman got up. “I’m not the one that just got bucked,” he said when she asked if he was okay. He couldn’t see any blood, which was a relief. But still, first trip out and he’d managed to get someone shot. He was the worst superhero ever. Sure that his static cling would hold, he cut off the power and swayed, before placing his hands on the ground to hold himself up. Apparently he had more power in the dreams, which would have been nice to know before he’d come out. “Maybe I ought to invest in one of those bulletproof suits.”
“Some practice probably won’t hurt either.” Kate frowned. There were materials in her suit that didn’t exist in this world yet, but maybe she could use her fortune to help him out somehow. “I’ll see what I can do about something bullet proof.” She looked at his coat. “Maybe starting with this.”
“Definitely gonna need some more practice.” But he’d figure it out, hopefully sooner than later. His dream self had figured out the whole superhero business with only a couple of mishaps so far. “This?” He was pretty proud of his jacket, nearly to his knees and dark blue with a yellow lining. “That’d be dope. What do you need?”
“Your measurements and a lot of pictures,” She gestured at the jacket. “So we can make it look as accurate as possible.” Kate then flirled her cape a little bit. “Is your chest part of it or just a shirt? With your emblem, that’s a good target. If that’s reinforced, baddies can shoot you there rather than aim for your face.” She tapped her own bat on her chest. “Bad guys like targets. Give them one that won’t hurt you.”
“Just a t-shirt I had lying around,” Virgil said, shrugging his jacket off his shoulders to reveal the t-shirt underneath, before shrugging the jacket back on. He touched the emblem briefly, frowning. “Didn’t think ‘bout it being a target. Guess I got a lot to learn still.”
“I’ll think of something for that,” Kate promised him. She figured it should still be comfortable and light. The jacket itself would still provide the best protection. “Just because you can be safe doesn’t mean you can’t stay stylish.”
