Who: Kate Bishop (Hawkeye) and Alecto Carrow
When: mid-August
Where: Park
What: Random Encounter
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Kate was throwing a tennis ball for Lucky at the park. Luckily, this place allowed dogs on leash, and she’d never had a problem letting him off leash. Some of the other dog owners did, too, and the dogs always seemed to have a great time together. So Kate brought a couple of tennis balls and threw one for the dog. He went bounding off after it, and brought it back covered in slobber. That was Kate’s least favorite part, but she put up with it because she loved Lucky.
Alecto still wasn’t really sure how to feel about everything. She didn’t know if she was still mad at Amycus or if she’d settled into the gray area where she stopped caring enough to be mad. Still, she was considering whether or not it would help to live together still, something she hadn’t really talked about to anyone. Maybe then her decision about whether or not she let Remus come over didn’t have to entirely depend on if she introduced him to her brother. Which was part of why she was in the park. The other part was just not wanting to be at the house at that moment. If she was going to live on her own, she’d have to do more work, which probably meant weddings, but also could mean taking pictures of people and their pets. It wasn’t a good option, but then neither was asking her parents for money. If Amycus really thought she wasn’t capable of looking after herself or taking anyone else’s feelings into consideration, she’d just prove him wrong. At least about the taking care of herself part. The feelings part was a little weird. She didn’t really want to understand that too much. Mostly because it meant addressing the fact that other people had emotions and how to make them feel better or something.
So today she decided to take pictures of people in the park. She was attempting stealth mode, but she really just wanted to take pictures of whoever was around. There were a lot of people out with their dogs, but one of them seemed to stand out to her at the moment. Shifting her position just a little, Alecto took a couple more pictures.
Kate picked up the slobbery ball and threw it again for Lucky--the golden lab--and then turned. She thought she saw someone with a camera. No, that definitely was a camera. She raised an eyebrow as she watched the woman taking more pictures. This was interesting.
Spotted. Alecto debated, momentarily just staying there. It wasn’t like she had to go anywhere. Not really. She was just taking pictures of a person and her dog. She took a moment where she aimed her camera another way, but then she looked back and focused her camera on her face to see what sort of reaction she was getting. After a moment, she sighed and stood up, walking her way. “Hi.” She didn’t start off with an apology because she didn’t think it was entirely necessary and she didn’t mean it. “Nice dog.” She glanced down at the dog who was now sniffing at her. “What’s its name?”
“Hi.” Kate took a couple of steps over toward the woman with the camera, still a little weary that she may have been an unwilling participant of a photo shoot. She didn’t really care. It wasn’t like she was doing anything naughty or anything, but it all depended on where those photos ended up. “Lucky. He’s my boyfriend’s dog, actually, but… well, I guess he’s partly mine now.”
Alecto didn’t betray any awkwardness, but that was probably because it took a lot to make her feel uncomfortable in any given situation. Usually any discomfort was felt because of some emotional thing. She did not do well with emotions. But this wasn’t that. She glanced down at the dog again. “Is he lucky?” The question was asked with a hint of a smile on her face. “Co-ownership.” Alecto had never owned anything with someone else. At least not someone who wasn’t Amycus. She didn’t know how to do that with people. She barely understood what she was doing when it came to Remus, but maybe he counted as having a dog. He was a werewolf. Probably a wolf more so than a dog. “I’m practising my photography,” she said after a moment, her attention shifting from Lucky up to the girl. “I’m Alecto. I work for the police department, but I was thinking about other branches of photography to get some extra money on the side. I haven’t taken pictures of living people or animals for a while. Sorry if it seemed creepy.” Was she sorry? Not really. But she could lie as well as the next person.
“Oh. Yeah. This is Lucky.” Kate grinned a little, motioning toward the big lug. He was probably the world’s best dog. Really. No lie. And in the Dreams Kate totally dog-napped him and drove cross-country to get away from it all for a while. And Clint was pissed. Whatever. He was a Dream!Jerk sometimes.
“Oh wow. Really? Um, that’s only a little creepy. But if you want to practice taking pictures of Lucky, be my guest. He’s not shy. C’mon, boy, show her what you got.” The dog may or may not have understood Kate’s words, and started to chase the ball with a little more enthusiasm.
“I’m a regular Wednesday Addams,” she said with a slight shrug. “But it’s nice to meet you, Lucky.” She didn’t reach down to pet him, but she did smile a little. She liked dogs. She liked other animals, too. She’d saved more than her fair share of them from her father and his hunts. She squatted down, picking up her camera and adjusting the focus before she took a picture. A pause, more adjustment, another picture. It wasn’t terribly interesting, she guessed, but she enjoyed it.
“We used to have dogs at home. My brother’s getting a dog now, though.” Dogs were an easy subject. “My family seems to prefer the super giant breed of dog. With so much fur, you could probably make a fur coat out of it. In a non-Cruella DeVille sort of way.”
Hey, getting pictures of animals was good. A lot of people liked having pictures of their animals, or other people’s animals. There were always calendars with dogs on them, posters of cats in teacups and all that crap. Kate didn’t mind loaning Lucky out for some pictures. And Lucky didn’t seem to care. He was quite possibly the best fucking dog ever. He just wanted to play ball and be loved.
“Yeah? Sometimes I think we could make one from this guy, too. Sheds like nothing I’ve ever seen.” Kate teased the dog. She loved him, though, that was blatant. “But it’d stink, wouldn’t it? Ugh. Wet Dog is the worst.”
Alecto paused, watching the dog for a moment like she was considering it. “That’s dogs for you,” she commented. “Even the ones with short hair could probably be useful. It would probably just be jewelry or maybe part of a dress.” She shrugged before considering the way it might smell. “Which is why you let other people wear it. Definitely. No one wants to smell like wet dog. But if you give it to your enemies, it’s probably worth it.”
“Man’s best friend and all,” Kate threw the ball for the dog. Ever since moving in with Clint, Kate had been even more all about Lucky. She knew that sometimes in her Dreams she took him for granted--and she knew Clint did, too--so she didn’t want to do that in Real Life. Not in the slightest. Lucky deserved better.
“I don’t really have enemies. Not here, at least.” Kate could say that her stepmother was her enemy. And kind of her father. And there were some in the Dreams, but not really here. “I’m not sure I’d even wish that on my worst enemy.”
Alecto smiled. “I am clearly crueler to my enemies.” Then again, if her dreams were anything to go off of, she was cruel enough even if you weren’t technically her enemy. She decided not to mention that. “But hey. At least no one’s actually hurt in the end.” Which was a step up from her dreams. She’d hurt plenty of people in her dreams.
She glanced over at Lucky, lifting the camera up for another picture. “But I heard somewhere that goats might be next in line for the title of man’s best friend.” She turned her attention back to Kate. “So I guess we’ll see how that goes. I could live with a goat for a pet, but my brother would definitely never allow it. His kids would probably be on my side.”
“Goats?” Kate asked, watching the woman taking pictures of her dog. She raised an eyebrow. “...why goats?”
“Apparently they can communicate with humans the same way dogs can. There was some study involving boxes and treats and they stared at humans until they came to help them get the treat. Something called directed staring or something?” She shrugged. Sometimes she got bored while waiting to be able to take pictures for work or while in line somewhere. She just figured this was good reading material. “Kind of like how dogs do, I guess. When they can’t get to something and they give you that look.”
“Huh.” Kate decided she’d have to look that up later. Something about goats and stares. She could probably find it on Wikipedia, anyway. If she remembered. Which she might not. Kate’s mind was a bit scattered lately, with the strange Dreams and everything else she had going on. But it wasn’t a big deal.
“Oh, Lucky has those looks. The damn dog has me wrapped around his little paws,” Kate said, affectionately, then reached forward to scratch at the dog’s ears. “We should probably head home, actually. Daddy’s gonna be missing you.” ...it was very strange referring to Clint as ‘Daddy.’ Her face scrunched a little and she decided to never do that again.
Alecto noted the expression on her face, but didn’t say anything about it. She never understood people that referred to their boyfriends as ‘daddy’, but she couldn’t really judge them either. She didn’t have any relationship stuff to go off of except for the fake relationships she’d had in order to appease her parents or get things she wanted. “All right. Have a good day. Bye Lucky.”
“You, too.” Kate said, giving her a smile. Then she turned to head back home with Lucky. He didn’t say goodbye, because he was a dog and dogs are notorious for their horrible manners.
