It was rare that she actually went to a bar with Leon. Usually they just had beer at one of their places. Or Logan and Sharon were around. But she actually enjoyed hanging out with just Leon sometimes, although she’d never admit it. He never asked her about her feelings or relationship or any of that other sappy crap. They just had a good time, even if it was full of insults on occasion.
“This round’s on you,” Veronica flat out said. “For not telling me your whole animal thing.” She was still pissed she was so late to the party on that one. But hey, at least she knew before Logan.
She was about to say something else when her gaze fell on the girl she had been keeping an eyes on. The poor thing was probably barely even twenty-one. Hell she might even be underage with a fake for all Veronica knew. But the point was she was clearly wasted. And this guy. Ugh he would not leave her alone. He had already hit on her twice, both times rejected. However now he seemed to be sliding an arm around her and helping her off the stool. Hell no.
“One sec,” she said to Leon already hopping off her own stool. “Oh my god, thanks so much,” she said to the douche in her most preppy accent. “I’ll take Julie from here” she had no idea if that was the girl’s name. But she didn’t think the girl would object which she didn’t.
“Thanks Sara,” the girl mumbled eyes half lidded. Veronica helped her out of bar, her free hand calling up and Uber on her phone.
Honestly, Leon hadn’t paid the girl any mind until Veronica stepped in. Drunk girls getting picked up at the bar was just a thing that happened. But once she saw Veronica practically cart the girl outside, he realized she was too drunk. He frowned a little, but it wasn’t until the guy went up to follow the girls outside that Leon himself stood and followed them out.
“Hey, she’s with me,” the guy was saying to Veronica, reaching to grab the girl from Veronica’s grasp. He hadn’t managed to get more than a hand on the girl’s arm before Leon grabbed him by the shoulder, spun him around, and punched him in the face.
Which was clearly the logical and obvious choice of action once Leon had a couple of drinks in him.
Veronica was right there with Leon. Most times she was all about punching first, asking questions later. But she had been trying a more subtle approach this time. Which hadn’t worked and she would have probably ended up punching the guy herself if it hadn’t been for Leon.
The girl however gasped. “It’s okay,” Veronica assured her. As much as she wanted to join Leon in punching the guy she knew this girl needed to be taken care of right now. “Come on let’s get you home,” she said to the girl still ushering her out of the bar. She glanced back at Leon giving him a look to take care of the douchebag.
The man swung at Leon, clipping him in the chin but giving Leon the opportunity to grab his wrist and pin him against the wall with his free hand. He ignored the slight crowed that had gathered around them as Leon frisked the man’s pockets. It didn’t take him long to feel the small baggie filled with pills during his pat down, and he took them through his pocket. “I’ll be taking these,” Leon said, holding the bag gingerly between his fingers in front of the man’s eyes.
“You can’t do that!” the man exclaimed.
“Tell it to your lawyer,” Leon said, already pulling out his cellphone and dialing the precinct. “You’re under arrest for the unlawful possession of a schedule one drug.” It wouldn’t take long for the cops to arrive to arrest the man, and Leon even put in another request for a squad car to come take the girl home. No doubt Veronica had probably already made arrangements for a cab to pick up the girl, but Leon didn’t particularly trust cab drivers, and the girl wouldn’t have to be able to function well enough to pay for the ride.
The cop cars arrived before the girls Uber. Leon had made the right call on that one. She felt better knowing a police officer was taking the girl home. Once everything was settled she turned her attention back to Leon.
“Okay, I need another drink,” Veronica stated heading back into the bar. It took a lot to rattle Veronica. She may be petite, but she was tough. However she was clearly shaken. This whole thing brought back memories, of what had happened to her.
Leon followed Veronica back into the bar. Now that things had calmed down somewhat, he took the time to rub his aching jaw, wondering vaguely if he was going to wake up with a bruise. He hoped not.
It was hard not to notice how frazzled she looked though. He wasn't sure if he'd ever witness Veronica shaken like this. Not when she'd managed to get herself kidnapped, or even when Sharon had gone into labour. “Good eye,” he said, nudging her gently with his elbow. “That girl’s lucky you spotted her.”
“She has no idea,” Veronica commented under her breath, implying that she in fact had a pretty damn good idea what would have been in store for that girl. “Good job with that creep,” Veronica added. It was rare she gave out compliments, especially to Leon. She was more of the insults out of love type. “I don’t get why guys think they can do things like that. We are not around for some perv to do as he pleases with.”
Leon pursed his lips together as the pieces began to click. He knew that Veronica had dealt with something similar to that in her dreams, and he wondered if that was limited just to the dreams or if it was something she had dealt with in real life as well. He knew that in the dreams, Revy had been raped by the police, but so far as he knew that hadn’t happened to here.
“Because human beings are scum,” Leon said. Once they got to the bar, Leon ordered them shots of Jameson. Seemed like Veronica could use something strong. “All you can do is lock up the ones that really cross the line.”
“You need to do a better job of it,” Veronica said with a scowl. As if it was Leon’s fault that all the perverts out there weren’t locked up. Once the shot came around she downed it before turning to look at Leon once again. “It happened to me,” Veronica finally said. This wasn’t something she often talked about, if ever. Logan knew because how do you not tell the man you live with, sleep with, something like that? But for the most part she didn’t bring it up. “No one should ever have to go through that.” And she was back to being bitter.
“I’m only one guy,” Leon muttered, though he knew Veronica was right. Especially since he hadn’t been taking his job very seriously since his return from New York. His face darkened when Veronica confided in him though, his suspicions confirmed. “No, no one should have to,” he said. He generally wasn’t a touchy feely kind of guy, but he moved to awkwardly give Veronica a comforting squeeze on the shoulder. “They catch the guy?”
Like Leon Veronica wasn’t really a touchy feely type. She responded to his awkward squeeze with a ‘what the fuck’ look. Although she did appreciate the thought. But really there was no need for that. “No,” Veronica responded still bitter. “But you know, it was my fault for getting so drunk, obviously.” That was clearly sarcasm. Veronica’s go to. Plus she hadn’t been wasted, she had been drugged.
Leon clenched his jaw. Sometimes, it was hard for him to not think that D really did have the right idea about humanity in general. “That’s bullshit. You know who the guy was? I’d be happy to pay him a visit for you.”
“No,” she waved to the bartender ordering another beer. Her stomach felt a little queasy and her boobs hurt like hell. Not that her boobs hurting had anything to do with drinking, but the nausea was probably a sign she needed to slow down. “It’s fine. It was high school.” She really shouldn’t have brought it up. She didn’t need Leon feeling sorry for her or any of that bull shit. Just seeing it almost happen to someone else had shaken her.
That didn’t make Leon frown any less. If anything, that made it worse. But he swallowed his string of curses with his drink. “I’m sorry, Veronica,” he said wearily. “I hate that that happened to you. If it was up to me, I’d have every single one of those scumbags behind bars.”
“Well it’s not up to you,” she snapped. Whoa, calm down Veronica. It wasn’t Leon’s fault. Besides he just helped that one girl. “Sorry,” she attempted an apologetic smile. “Shit like that just really pisses me off.” Like it would anyone with half a heart. “Anyway, I’m kind of done for the night. You ready to go?”
Leon’s frown tightened at the edges, but he managed to avoid snapping back at her. He knew she didn’t mean anything by it, and his antagonizing her wasn’t going to help anyone. But it still kind of stung. Instead of saying anything though, he chugged back the rest of his drink. “Yeah,” he said, not ungently. “I’ll take you home.”
