Izzy and Katou spared fairly regularly now, it was a good way to catch up with each other and it meant they kept their skills honed. It definitely helped to go against someone with far different skills to your own and Izzy thought it was giving them both a little edge ready for the next crazy thing that came along. Unless it was illness of course, like the latest crazy had been.
Today though Izzy had noticed that Katou had been a little distracted though by what she wasn’t sure. “You okay?” she asked handing him a chilled water bottle.
Katou was more than willing to go sparring. For once, since he’d received his job offer at the Agency, he really wanted to be on top of things. Before, fighting whatever came along had been for fun, but he guessed if he was actually going to get paid for it he probably shouldn’t be getting his ass handed to him by weird dragonmen and needing to get his ass bailed out by girlies like Anna.
For another, being physical took his mind off of all sorts of things. In particular right now, Caleb. His best guy friend was pissed at him, and all Katou had done was try to watch his back as far as this Hanna chick was concerned. He’d even told Katou that Hanna was a liar - it was the name of their goddamn TV show for fuck’s sake. But then, maybe Katou could’ve gone about it a different way. And maybe he shouldn’t have told Caleb that they weren’t friends. He hadn’t meant it. It was just something that came out.
Instead of answering Izzy right away, he poured the cool liquid into his mouth, not touching mouth of the bottle with his own lips. Then he closed his mouth and poured a little extra on his head to cool down. “Yeah, fine,” he said after a moment. He frowned to himself. “I just got into a stupid fight with a friend of mine. He’ll get over it though.”
Izzy was going to miss working with Katou but she was happy he’d found something that he liked more. She’d still see plenty of him when they got together for sparring and when she or he decided to randomly drop by each others with beer just for a catch up. Izzy wasn’t going to give that up at all.
Nodding she said, “And you? Seems like you aren’t over it. If you wanna tell me you can you know” she added just to get it out there.
Katou had no intention of giving that stuff up either. Izzy was still one of his closest friends, and there was no chance he was going to let that go anytime soon. Just like there was no chance he was going to let his friendship with Caleb slip through his fingers. That was something old Katou would have done.
“There ain’t nothing for me to get over. I’m not pissed at him. He’s just being a bit of a bitch because he thinks I made a move on his girlfriend.” Katou bit his lip. “And maybe because I told him we weren’t friends. But it wasn’t like I meant that or nothing. He should’ve known better.”
“Did you make a move on his girlfriend?” Izzy asked, it didn’t sound likely but it sounded like an odd thing for someone who was Katou’s friend to make up. Her eyebrows raised, “Sounds like you maybe have an apology to make. You can’t just tell someone they aren’t your friend anymore and expect them to get over it. It doesn’t work that way, I’d kick your ass if you said that to me”
Katou frowned and very deliberately didn’t look anywhere near Izzy. “I mean, maybe a little. Just to see if she’d go for it,” Katou mumbled. He knew he’d fucked up. Admitting it was a lot harder than that though. He had his reasons. It wasn’t like he’d actually wanted to fool around with Hanna. He cleared his throat. “Yeah, but if I said it to you you’d know I didn’t really mean it, right?”
Izzy nudged him, “Then you kind of deserve him to be a bit pissed with you” she pointed out, not unkindly but just logically. “Maybe, it depends on the situation, it’d still hurt to hear even if I did know you didn’t mean it”
Katou flushed a little, though he couldn’t really get mad at Izzy. There was a part of him that knew she was right, even if he did want that part of him to shut up. “I guess,” Katou muttered. “I just don’t think it’s that big a deal. It ain’t like I’m actually interested in the chick. I was trying to look out for Caleb.” Unfortunately, the more he used that excuse, the more it fell flat, even to his own ears.
“Your heart was probably in the right place” Izzy said, “But honestly if you hit on Simon as a way of trying to look out for me I would not be happy. Whether you were interested or not isn’t really the point” Izzy wrapped an arm around his shoulders in a brief hug, “You are one of the best friends anybody could hope for so I am sure you can get through this. But maybe you just need to admit you fucked up and apologise, properly”
“Maybe,” Katou muttered, returning the hug. He could do the admitting he fucked up thing, but he’d be damned if he was going to apologize over this. Apologies were not something Katou ever did. “I guess I can make things right. Though, speaking of this Simon dude, I think I’m gonna have to meet him at some point. Give him the old Katou seal of approval. Or not.”
Apologies weren’t usually Izzy’s thing either but she could admit when she was wrong and apologise if it was honestly due. Which it sounded like it was in this case. “Give it a go because it sounds like he’s a friend you wanna hang onto” Izzy said before grinning, “I give you permission to hit on Simon and see how that works out for you” she teased him.
Katou snorted. “I dunno if you oughtta do that,” he said cheerfully. “I’d really hate to charm him away from you. I mean, it’s not my fault that I’m so smart, good-looking, and charming, but I’d probably whisk him right off his feet.”
Izzy laughed, “See now I just wanna see that because I’m pretty sure he think’s I am way better looking than you and I have different charms” she winked.
Katou snorted. “He just thinks that because he hasn’t met me yet,” he said, winking at Izzy, more bravado than actually thinking that he could charm her boyfriend away from her. He was feeling better now though. Even if Caleb never talked to him again, at least Izzy was likely to stick by his side.
