It had been a trying few days, and that was not counting getting sick and once again bleeding from the eyes. As Raven had found herself with a shorter temper and quicker to lash out, it had just seemed a better course of action to avoid people when at all possible. Meditation. Going into the mirror as an added barrier from doing something she might later regret.
Stupid dreams.
But dreaming about Earth being subjugated because Trigon had managed to possess her (well that explained the shorter temper), her team having to kill her, only to be possessed by the souls of Azarath and then rise from the ashes? That was a lot to take in. Waking with a start, the teen sat in bed for a moment before noticing something…. odd about her.
There were ashes around her on her bed. That…. That wasn’t a good sign. And she didn’t really know what to make of it. Which meant that her mind was blanking because how was she supposed to respond. And when she wasn’t sure how to respond, that meant things happened. Like portal roulette, where she just sort of portaled out because thinking things through wasn’t happening, and there were usually three locations, or more people, she tended to end up portaling to.
Tonight or this morning or whatever time it was? It seemed the portalling ended up with her at Ed’s.
At least for Raven’s sake, this time she’d randomly appeared he was dressed. He was recovering from whatever that strange illness had been so he hadn’t been all that active or talkative, but hey clothing. Real clothes and not just pjs for once. Whatever that had been Ed could honestly do without again. He was still a little paranoid of random eye blood, occasionally found himself checking a mirror whenever anything felt off.
Normally Ed noticed Raven’s random portaling, but this time he’d had a pair of headphones in and was listening to something on his phone, studying the next alchemical thing he could used to kick Lina’s ass with. Alchemy typically wasn’t something meant for offense, but he’d done pretty decently all the same last time, now he was looking to do better. Win even. Possibly give evil laughter when Lina begged him to stop. Yep. Those were the things good dreams were made of.
He grinned as he doodled a little picture of it, though his art skills were entirely lacking-stick figure Lina clearly on the ground as he reigned champion near by. And grinned at the notebook he was writing in.
Clothes were definitely good. Raven was already out of sorts thanks to the dream that going into skittish cat mode really wasn’t something she wanted to deal with. Not that she ever wanted to deal with it anyway. But one less thing to be awkward about. Because really, now that she had enough presence of self to realize where she was, she felt awkward. Honestly she didn’t know what she’d been thinking, she had just reacted and followed her instincts.
Something that wasn’t easy to explain even if she could understand it.
Shifting awkwardly, Raven tugged on her hair some. So far she wasn’t noticed. Probably good since her mind was grappling with what had happened both in the dreams, and more to the fact she had woken up in what could only be described as her own ashes. Bleeding from the eyes? Not an experience she wanted to repeat, twice was bad enough thanks. But waking up in her own ashes? That was new and what it tied to…
Shaking her head some, the teen went over to where Ed was doodling and just levitated in lotus position. Okay he was a crap drawer, but it wasn’t like she was any better. Even just sitting in silence tended to help ground Raven as it were.
Finally Ed seemed to notice when she got close enough and raised an eyebrow. “Er….hey Ray?” Ray. He’d never really called her that, but it was easier than saying Raven all the time. Thinking about it, it didn’t really sound half bad. Ray. Unless she hated it he was going to go with that for a while. Glancing down at his pathetic drawing he gave her an embarrassed grin.
“I never claimed to be an artist.” He mused out loud for an excuse. “That’s supposed to be Lina, eating shit.” He pointed at the figure on the ground. He hadn’t really questioned Raven’s sudden appearance, he was kind of used to it by now. But he did pull out one of the earbuds at least not to be a total jerk.
“Hi.” Okay that was a start. She blinked briefly as he called her Ray, but then again, it was something she got called occasionally in the dreams. Usually by Beast Boy or Cyborg. Still, Ed had never called her it before so it did warrant the brief blinking. Or she was still out of it. That was probably most of it really.
“I can see why.” Deadpan reaction. That was normal. And expected since, well, Raven. She tended to be fairly deadpan in her reactions. Though when he explained just what he was drawing, the teen could only quirk a brow. Did she even want to know why he was drawing Lina eating shit? Probably not. It was Ed and Lina.
“Got it.”
She still felt uneasy though, not quite off balance as she had been with the second round of dreams. While she had more abilities to get used to, it seemed round two had helped her figure out how to maintain balance in regards to her powers as things shifted. Mostly. She hadn’t died before. At least, she didn’t think so. There was the becoming the Portal and then being tiny in Hell the first time around, but that hadn’t crossed over..
“I think I died.” Or she could just blurt it out. Sure. That worked as well.
Well, she didn’t seem to hate the name so that was something at least. It sounded a bit weird on his lips but whatever. He’d try it a few more times before he would pin it on her. “I was supposed to be reading this book instead but eh, I got bored.” English was not his favorite subject at the least, but apparently it was necessary to graduating blah blah blah.
“..Wait what?” She died “But I can see you so you aren’t dead now right?” He automatically reached out a hand to touch her arm just to make sure, he really couldn’t lose anyone else. He’d suffered enough loss in his life of people he loved.
Not hating a name was always a good start. It did seem strange as she hadn’t heard it here, but it was still something she had heard in the dream enough that it wasn’t terribly strange or shocking. It was just a shortening of her name. So she just nodded as Ed said he was supposed to be reading but got bored. That was typical for him. Raven? Not so much. She tended to forget the world existed when she was reading, but to each their own.
Then her words seeming to register with Ed and she just nodded.
“Yeah….I’m not dead now. Anymore?” She didn’t know and so rubbed her eyes with the hand on the side Ed wasn’t touching to ensure she was there now. “I dreamt about being killed. Then killing my father in a possessed body. Then rising from the ashes. Then I woke up in ashes and felt off.”
Ashes which still clung to her.
“Then I was here.” Because of acting on instinct and going to someone she felt instinctively comfortable around.
Anything to do with science or math and Ed would have been all over the book, but English was another issue all together. They often chose classics, and Ed wasn’t terribly interested in it. Sci-fi, fantasy, hell even anything modern would have been a great change-but nope. Classics. To him it meant a lot of disinterested and long nights in his future trying to get through it.
“That’s good?…” Ed wasn’t sure the word should be good but good was all he could come up with as he reached up to touch the what appeared to be ash off her shoulder. He smelled it, yep. There was fucking ash on his girlfriend. For a long while he just stared at her in silence before pulling her into a hug.
English classes did need to get more variety, though it also seemed to depend on the teacher. She’d been lucky in that regard but had heard complaints from other students who got stuck with the same books that most found boring because just back to the supposed classics. Then again, science and math tended to be the books she would sooner use her learn through osmosis abilities. They all had their strong points.
Ed certainly didn’t sound convinced it was good, though it might have been the phrasing more than anything, not that Raven had a definitive answer herself. Still, it was one of those situations where there probably wasn’t any sort of handbook on what was appropriate to say and it wasn’t like she was the best with words. So for now sitting awkwardly.
Or Ed could hug her. That worked too. She wasn’t always the most physically affectionate but for whatever reason, with Ed it wasn’t as big a deal and whether she admitted it or not? She really needed the hug after what had just happened so she just sort of relaxed into it and returned the hug silently.
