A quiet lunch in her office was just what the doctor ordered and Anne had brought them sandwiches from Baxter’s, hot chocolates too. Settling down in her desk chair opposite Constance, she unloaded the sandwiches and cake on the desk between them and put a hot chocolate in front of her. “So I’ve been meaning to tell you I ran into someone at the bakery the other day,” she said, opening the wrapping on her sandwich.
Constance had discovered that Baxter’s was the greatest place ever and was definitely not going to help her waistline but she couldn’t say no. “Oh? Who?” she asked before taking a bite from her own sandwich and closing her eyes briefly as she enjoyed it.
“Good?” Anne asked with a smile, referring to the sandwich and the look on her friend’s face. “Well, it was the strangest thing. He bumped into me and called me ‘your majesty’,” Anne laughed and shook her head, taking another bite.
“Very” Constance grinned, “Your majesty huh? Was he hitting on you?” she asked curiously, either that or he was a little weird in the head. She wasn’t sure which was better.
“Oh heavens no,” Anne shook her head. “At least I’m pretty sure he wasn’t, he mentioned a husband so I’m imagining that I’m not his type,” she laughed. “I think...I don’t know, he said it like...he knew me,” she frowned.
“How strange. He didn’t look familiar or anything did he?” Constance asked, “Maybe we both have some doppelgangers around here, because somebody at the coffee shop thought they recognised me too”
“Really? What were they like? What did they say?” Anne asked. “My man was called Athos Fere and he said I reminded him of a French Queen,” she gave a little laugh of disbelief and took another bite of her sandwich.
“He’s a PI, all quite exciting really. He seemed very nice. His name was D’Artagnan and he just said I reminded him of somebody he knows or knew” Constance said, “A french queen huh? That would be a bloody good chat up line if he wasn’t gay”
“D’Artagnan?” Anne looked up from her sandwich in surprise. “That’s the name of my guy’s husband. That’s...weird, isn’t it?” she asked curiously.
Constance shrugged, “Is it? I dunno, could just be a weird coincidence, I mean if they live close by it could just be their local coffee shop”
Anne chuckled to herself and shook her head. “You’re always so positive,” she laughed. “I think that with a name like D’Artagnan, we’re talking more than co-incidence. What else did your guy say to you?”
“I don’t mean coincidence with the names, I mean it’s just a coincidence that they’re married and happened to meet us separately” Constance told her with an affectionate eye roll, “Not much really. He offered to show me around the area a bit, help me get orientated which I plan on taking him up on once the hotel is up and running and we have a little more time”
Anne grinned at Constance’s eye roll. “That sounds like a great idea,” she smiled. “I’ve asked Athos if we could have lunch sometime. He paid for my tea that day so I said I would return the favour,” she explained. “Have you spoken to D’Artagnan since then?” she asked.
“No, I’ve been too busy to even think of it but I do still have his card. Maybe we could arrange it so the four of us get together, after all it sounds like they are together. And it might be nice to laugh over how small the world can truly be sometimes”
“That sounds like a great idea,” Anne smiled. “Once we’re a little bit more set in a routine though. How about mid October?” she asked.
“Oh definitely, let’s get opening and all that out of the way first. Mid to late October sounds good” Constance agreed, it made much more sense.
“Isn’t it exciting, meeting new people in a new city,” Anne grinned. “I wonder who else we’ll meet,” she pondered.
“Who knows. As long as they aren’t all totally crazy I think it’s going to be interesting”
