Anne was looking forward to spending the night with Vanessa. She adored her sister and enjoyed spending time with her. Some people might not understand that they were family given both were fostered but they were and that was all that mattered to Anne. Vanessa was her sister. The end. Nothing would ever change that. The two of them had rough childhoods and had bonded in ways that they hadn’t with the others though the entire family was close Anne considered herself closest to Nessa.
She had been wanting to talk to her about something too. It was odd not having her at home. She’d missed her when she went to live with her father though she was glad she was back. They’d kept in constant contact though for which she was thankful for.
Letting the parents know where she was going, she made her way over to Nessa’s and pushed the door open. “Hey!” she called out as she let herself in.

Vanessa was in the kitchen finishing up a few last minute snacks for her and her sister while she waited for Anne to get to the house, turning with a happy grin when she heard that greeting. “I’m in the kitchen!” She called, adding one last dish to the dishwasher before turning around to hug her little sister. “I feel like it’s been forever since I got to spend time with you.”
“Mom and Dad know you’re here right?” She asked. She knew it didn’t make sense to most people, her calling her foster parents mom and dad still and using those same terms for her biological dad and his wife. But...they were all four her parents.

“Hey,” Anne said moving in to hug Vanessa, a bright smile on her face. “So good to see you and the food smells amazing. You adult,” she teased her sister. “Seriously, it is amazing to see you again. Been too long sister of mine,” she replied brightly.
“Oh yes, told them and Lisa too just in case,” she replied. “Wouldn't imagine not telling them. You know what they’re like when they worry.”

“It’s nothing super special. Just some snacks I thought you might like at some point during our movie and catch up night. And I’m not going to be that much of an adult tonight promise. I have Eeyore footie pajamas that I’m going to wear. The kind with the hood? Have you seen those?” Vanessa said, her bright bubbly personality taking over as she looked at her sister.
“Oh yeah. I know exactly what they’re like when they worry. Why don’t you go pick the first movie on Netflix or whatever and I’ll text to let them know you got here safely and we can just forget about everything except catching up. Sound good?”
***
“Sure, still sounds amazing though,” Anne smiled. “Something romantic and funny i think,” she said as she moved into the living room to turn on Netflix. Romance, comedy and friendship was what inspired Anne in her search for what made her happy in life.
She believed everyone deserved happiness and love in their lives.
Didn’t mean she understood it fully herself but she was trying. She wanted a dear friend who meant the world to her, someone who she could share everything with. It was just a matter of finding them.

“Whatever you want to watch! I’m good for anything. You know that.” Vanessa called over her shoulder as she texted their parents to let them know that Anne was with her for the night. She made them up a couple plates of snack and went into the living room, dropping her phone off on one of the end tables as she walked past.
“So what did you want to talk to me about?” she asked making herself comfortable on the couch and handing her sister one of the plates.

“I know but still!” she called back as she flicked through finally settling on Valentine’s Day. Settling down on the couch, she pulled her legs up under her before leaning over and grabbing a handful of chips.
Anne paused for a moment not sure how to ask the question. It was something she’d spent a lot of time thinking about but verbalising it? That was harder. This was Vanessa, her sister and best friend in many ways.
If she couldn’t ask her who could she ask?
“How do you know if you like someone?” she finally asked

Out of everything her little sister might have wanted to talk to her about, that question hadn’t been anywhere on the list and she just stared at her for a second before clearing her throat and popping a chip in her mouth to buy her some time to think about the answer. “Well...for me whenever I’ve liked somebody I haven’t been able to quit thinking about them and I get this kind of butterfly feeling in my stomach whenever they’re around. And when I’m actually talking to them I get really nervous and stammer over my words. Why? Did you meet somebody?” Vanessa asked, leaning her head on her hand as she looked at Anne.
“Is it anybody I know? Because you know the rules. Sister stamp of approval has to be given before the three week mark on relationships.” She said, unable to resist teasing her sister a little bit.

“No not anyone yet. I was just looking at celebs who I thought was cute?” she shrugged. “I just found that I seemed to be choosing more girls than I was guys in that regard,” she admitted in a rush. “Sorry been awhile since I got that off my chest. Plus I always just connect better with girls but I don’t know guys seem to interest me if they’re not too much of an idiot?” Anne shrugged. “I don’t know, it’s just so complicated.
“I mean it’s no problem to like both or just girls but I don’t know how to explain it?” She knew she had surprised Nessa but she had to ask
***
“You don’t need to apologize for that Annie. And there’s seriously nothing wrong with it.” Vanessa stopped to think for a minute, wanting to say the right thing to her little sister. Or at least as close to the right thing as she could because this wasn’t a situation she’d ever personally been in. And in addition to being her favorite sibling, biological or foster, Anne was one of her closest friends. She just really didn’t want to mess this up as a friend or as a big sister.
“It sounds to me like you’re bi but primarily drawn to women.”
***
“I guess that makes sense. I mean I haven’t dated so it’s hard to know for sure. Maybe if or when I do that will help clear things up. Most poeple just annoy me though,” she shrugged. “They don’t understand the finer things in life, they’re too focused on being popular you know?” she shrugged.
“Thanks though. I’ll think about it but honestly I was just curious,” Anne admitted. She had been thinking the same but honestly she’d never been good at that sort of thing so it was hard to fully understand. She knew she connected better emotionally with women but was that enough for romance?

“When you meet the right person - you’ll know I’m sure. And I’m not talking about the forever right person. I’m talking about the right person to be your first relationship. Which isn’t always the same person.” Vanessa said, leaning over to hug her sister and kiss her temple affectionately. “And you are too smart to fall for someone who’s obsessed with being popular.
“You know anytime you have a question you can ask me. If I don’t know the answer we’ll figure it out or find someone who does. I promise.”
