Who: Logan & Veronica
What: Pregnancy test
When: Today!
Where: Their place
Rating/Warnings: Lowish, talk of pregnancy, some swearing
Status: Complete
This could not be happening. Veronica had been in denial for over a week now. Ever since she had been late. But here she was with four tests saying she was pregnant. Now she was just waiting on the fifth. The timer dinged and she looked down at the test. Another positive. Veronica was a very logical woman. She knew there couldn’t be five false positives. One, possibly two, but not five.
“Fuck!” she exclaimed throwing the test down. “No, no no. This can not be happening.” Veronica Mars was many things. But mommy material was nowhere on that list.
Logan had just gotten home, set a bag of Chinese takeout on the table, and tossed his keys in the basket near the door. His jacket was next, tossed onto the sofa. He picked up the mail and thumbed through it. There was nothing but ads, per usual.
Veronica hadn’t called to him yet. He saw her car, and she usually said hello when he came in. He frowned and looked around. Nothing was out of place. He heard her from the bathroom a moment later. Well, that did answer that. However -- she seemed angry. That usually meant one thing - the monthly deterrent in their sex life. Well, shit.
She didn’t come out right away, which at first wasn’t cause for alarm, but what couldn’t be happening? They didn’t have a vacation planned or anything. They weren’t planning a pool party either. Curiously, he knocked, and then opened the door. He might get chewed out, but he did it anyway. “Hey,” he said, and then he looked down.
By the time Logan entered the bathroom Veronica was sitting on top the toilet head in hands.
This can not be happening. The thought kept repeating itself over and over again. She looked up though when she heard her boyfriend.
Well, shit. This wasn’t exactly how she had been planning to tell him. She covered her surprise with anger though. It was her go to after all. “What the hell Logan?” she snapped.
Logan ignored the anger. Instead he was drawn to the boxes and the wrappers. She hadn’t had time to clean up. “I was going to ask you the same thing. I thought you might be sick or something.” A white lie wouldn’t hurt right now. Apparently they had some bigger issues.
There were a few sticks, and they all had plusses, or lines. He felt a quick shot of adrenalin. “Is that what …. Are you - ? Oh - .” Normal sentences were not going to happen. He also wasn’t unhappy, or even angry, although certainly shock was keeping him calm.
Veronica was angry. Kids were never in her plan. Living with Logan was a big enough step and she had been certain it was the last step she was going to take. She wasn’t planning on having kids with him.
“Yes,” she said with a sigh. “I’m fucking pregnant.” There was no point hiding it with all the positive pregnancy tests lying around. “This is all your fault.”
Logan stared at the sticks, all positive. How much proof did she need? It was kind of funny actually. This was just like her, taking one after another, thinking there might be a different answer, and thinking her life was over. It wasn’t though, and it wouldn’t be. “I would hope it’s my fault.” It was a lame joke, but worth a little levity maybe.
He was going to be a father. That was -- He didn’t even know where to begin with that, so his brain quickly backpedaled to something he was more equipped to deal with. Which was - ? SHIT. HE WAS GOING TO BE A FATHER! Are you sure was a really stupid question, considering the number of tests. HE WAS GOING TO BE A FATHER!
His mouth opened and closed, and simply didn’t work. “How? I mean, I know HOW. I - .”
Really Logan? Now was not the time for jokes. Nothing about this situation was funny. Or amusing. But then Logan seemed to go back into shock, unable to form words. And that was amusing. It even brought a smirk to Veronica’s face. “Oh good, I really wasn’t in the mood to give you the birds and bees talk,” Veronica muttered sarcastically.
Another sigh. She was still frustrated with this whole situation but they needed to figure shit out. She could yell more at her boyfriend later. “What are we going to do?”
“Looks like successful pollination. The world won’t end.” It was a little funny, and he smiled in the face of all those little lines.
Back in high school, he would have been completely lost with this. However, he had always known that someday he would get married and have kids. In spite of all the attitude, he had relationships, both good and bad. He wasn’t as against them as Veronica seemed to be, although she had her own. She put on a tough face - but it was a face.
What did that leave them with? “Do you like pink or blue?” he ventured, stepping closer to her, hoping that she wasn’t going to lash out and smack him for being careless.
That was a matter of opinion. Because her world? Yeah it was pretty much over. She was now going to be a mom. Even though this wasn’t exactly what she wanted it wasn’t like she was going to give the kid up. She would never put a child through what her own mother had put her through. “Speak for yourself,” she muttered sarcastically her mind already running through how her life was about to change.
What? Pink or blue? What was Logan even - oh. “I don’t freakin’ know!” Veronica replied. She hadn’t had time to think about what sex the baby was going to be. “Black.” Well that was her favorite color.
“The world won’t end for you either. What’s ending? Nothing.” He took another step towards her, still staying at an arms length. The girl could pack a punch. Would it be so wrong if he smiled? It happened anyway. They were going to be parents. That wasn’t bad. Sure, his parents were not exactly stable. His mother loved him, but she had her own issues, and in the dreams she had more of them. He was never going to turn into his father.
So, he was also a little nervous about the whole thing. “I kind of want to do this. It doesn’t have to suck.” They weren’t in high school anymore. That would have been a disaster.
“I don’t think black is a color choice. Goth babies are not in.”
Uh a lot of things were ending. She was about to be responsible for another life. Yeah, there had always been Backup but that was different. That dog basically took care of himself. Hell he took care of Veronica more than she took care of him. What a good little protector he was. “My life. As a single, independent woman.” Duh Logan. “Now I’m going to responsible to keep another human being alive.” And yes she was sticking to singulars. Even though she did know Logan wasn’t going to let her do this alone.
“Of course it won’t suck for you,”” Veronica replied sarcastically though she didn’t push her boyfriend away. “You’re not the one who has to push a baby out of you.” That was the scariest part of this whole thing. “Too bad. Our baby is going to like black.” Hey at least she said our this time.
“You aren’t single, and you’ll still be independent - kind of. You’ll just have someone to take care of with your boyfriend. The keyword is WITH. WE!” Yes, he noticed that whole ‘i’ bit. “WE are having a baby. You are going to have cravings, and you are going to be --” emotional, bitchy, irritating, “hormonal. I am going to have to deal with those things.” Without losing an eye, preferably. “There is a WE.”
“Women have babies all the time and they manage to push them out.” She didn’t say she wasn’t going to have it. That caused him to relax. They were going to have a baby, and it sounded great. A baby. “Do you want a boy or a girl who likes black?”
She wasn’t married. She was single when it came to legal documents. Now she was going to be a mom. It’d be a lot more difficult to escape Logan if they had a kid tying them together. “I’m sorry, what?” Veronica snapped, clearly already ‘hormonal’. “You are going to have to deal with them?” Really, Logan? It was the fucking least he could do when she was walking around growing a human.
“I don’t want either!” Logan should know this. She sighed taking a step back from her boyfriend. “Look, it’s still early. We don’t even know if it will stick. Let’s just deal with this later.” Deep down Veronica knew this was real and she knew she would end up keeping it. But for now? Denial.
There were a few things he could say, but he wasn’t sure how good they actually were right now. They both needed to digest, and he knew Veronica very well. This could easily go south unless he closed his mouth, and just let the matter cool down. Yes, she was hormonal, and yes, they were having a kid, and yes, he didn’t mind it so much. Of course they came with fucked up families, but they could do better. He was hopeful. He wasn’t sure his dream self would agree, but he was more stable outside of the dreams.
“Hey, I love you, and I actually want this. We could do it. Think about it, okay, please?” He held arms open, letting her come to them if she wanted to.
There wasn’t much to think about. It’s not like Veronica would give up a kid. But still it was overwhelming. She sighed reluctantly falling into Logan’s arms. “Okay.”
