Who: Tyler, Kate and Chuck
What: Employees and boss at Victrola
When: September 19
Where: Victrola
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete
Kate had been shot in the shoulder. The wound was a bit of a mess, but thankfully the bullet had missed doing irreparable damage. Her bones were all still intact, and the surgeon had repaired the majority of the damage… she just had to let things sit still for a bit and heal. Which was damn near impossible for a woman who based her whole self identity on her archery skills. So, she had to take time off one job. And the other.
Victrola wasn’t busy when she came in to pick up her paycheck. Her last one for a while, unfortunately, but she needed those funds. So she headed into the back and dug around in the filing cabinet or whatever, and picked up the paper. The next several weeks were gonna suck hardcore.
Tyler liked working with Kate. They’d always had an easy kind of camaraderie even if they hadn’t hung out much outside of work. So he’d been a little disappointed when Kate hadn’t come in to work, and then a sense of worry when he found out why.
Which is why when he spotted her heading to the back, he told his coworker to cover for him for a couple of minutes and then headed back to where he’d seen Kate go. “Hey you,” he said, spotting her gathering her paycheque. “How you doing?”
Unfortunately Chuck didn’t spend as much time at Victrola anymore. That was the downside to Pam taking over. Up side? When he did go to Victrola it was more for pleasure. Really he might as well enjoy the fruits of his labor.
However since it wasn’t time for a show yet Chuck had been in the back office going over some paper work. It was getting boring, obviously that meant it was time for a drink. He headed out to the bar area only to practically walk into two of his bartenders standing just outside his office. “Can I help you?”
“Hey,” Kate said, giving Tyler a one-armed hug in greeting. Her paycheck spalled against his back as she patted him in that like, bro-hug kind of way. Kate’s other arm was up in a sling, hugged tightly against her body. There weren’t any other cuts or bruises on her, though. Her hair was a bit sloppy, and her make-up light for the day. She’d tried to make herself presentable, but since her right arm was mostly useless it was hard. “I’m hanging in there.”
Then their boss showed up and instinctively Kate straightened her shoulders and spine. It hurt, though, and she winced and bowed her shoulders again. “I was just picking up my paycheck,” she explained, holding it up with her left hand.
Tyler returned the hug, though frowned slightly when he saw that she had winced trying to straighten up. He knew vampire blood could heal her in seconds, but while he was friends with Caroline and Stefan, he knew it was overstepping his bounds to offer up their blood, or even to tell Kate what they were. “It’s pretty slow up there,” Tyler said to Chuck. “I thought I’d come see how Kate’s been holding up.”
Ah, right. Pam had mentioned that Kate was going to be out for a few weeks. Some kind of injury, honestly Chuck hadn’t paid too close attention. He trusted Pam’s judgement with these sorts of situations. “Right, how long are you going to be out for again?” Another thing Pam probably knew that slipped Chuck’s mind. However, with Kate right in front of him he might as well ask himself.
“It’ll pick up when it gets closer to the show.” Granted there were a few dancers on stage at the moment but it was nothing like what happened later in the evening. “You’re free to take a break now.” He had picked up on the friends that Tyler and Kate were friends. Perhaps more. He didn’t pay that close of attention. Still since it was slow it only seemed fair to give the guy a break.
“Doc says I need to give it a rest for four weeks,” Kate sounded as though she was disappointed. And, to be honest, she was. But her disappointment had nothing to do with working at Victrola. It was more to do with the fact that her other job--her passion, really--was going to suffer. She couldn’t use a bow and arrow for an entire month.
She was seriously concerned that she might die. Actually wither and die. Hopefully Lucky would distract her.
“Thanks,” Tyler said to Chuck. “I’ll be back at the bar before that happens.”
“Four weeks?” Tyler asked, aghast. He did know how much Kate liked her archery, and it would probably be tough to be away from that for so long. But Kate was also his favourite coworker, and the idea of not having her around for an entire month was kind of disheartening. “You can’t speed that up?”
Chuck had no idea about Kate and archery. Why would he? But he wasn’t a fan of losing a bartender for that long. Especially one of his female ones. He was about to turn to leave when Tyler asked the question about speeding things up. Chuck turned back around, curious about the answer as well.
Kate was about to thank Chuck as well--it was nice to have permission from the boss for her and Tyler to get to hang for a few minutes--but then Tyler asked about speeding things up? Kate shrugged her good shoulder, careful not to move the right half of her body. She was on some pain killers, so she wasn’t actively in pain, but she wanted to keep her injured shoulder as still as possible. “Not unless you know of a way to magically knit together torn muscle and ligaments, and heal stitches, and whatever else.”
“As a matter of fact…” Tyler said, with a bit of a teasing smirk. “Frankly, I’m almost surprised that neither of you do.” He knew Kate was on the Network and dreamed, and while he hadn’t often seen his boss on the website - for one, Tyler really didn’t want to talk to his employer on social media - he had seen him now and then. “But there’s a couple of people from my dreams I could ask if you wanted.”
Ah, the network. Even though Chuck now had dreams of his own he still found the whole thing strange and a bit ridiculous. Honestly, he didn’t give a fuck about what anyone else dreamt (except Blair), and he was tired of all the posts about it. Part of the reason he didn’t spend much time on it. That and he was a busy man.
“No,” Chuck replied flatly to both Kate’s question and Tyler’s comment. Why would he know someone like that? However he was a little curious about the people in Tyler’s dreams. “But I wouldn’t be opposed to one of your friends healing Kate,” he added as if he had any say in the matter.
Kate paused, listening to Tyler, then turned to glance at Chuck. “Yeah,” she nodded, enthusiastically. “You and me both, actually.” It was teasing, with a little smirk and a twinkle in her eyes. Her twinkling eyes turned back to Tyler. “Is it… some kind of magic thing?” She asked. Kate was often confused and interested by the things she read on the net about the magic users and their Dreams.
“You could say that,” he said. “It’s a drinking someone’s blood thing. Which is about as pleasant as you’d expect it, but I haven’t seen an injury it couldn’t heal yet.”
Drinking blood? What kind of shit were Tyler and his dream friends into. If he was ever injured for some bizarre reason he’d settle for a hospital, thanks. “Good luck with that.”
Yeeeeah. Kate’s eyebrows both raised up at that idea. Drinking someone’s blood? Wasn’t that like, the first step to getting HIV, or something? But she wouldn’t rule it out. If it’d cut four weeks of torture (plus however many more of PT) down even the slightest, she’d consider it. “I’ll think about it.” She’d have to weigh the pros and cons, and possibly meet the person whose blood she’d be guzzling? ...she wondered how much she’d have to drink, and if she could keep it down.
“It’s not as bad as you think,” he said, realizing even as he said it that that sounded weird as fuck. “It happens a lot in my dreams. But I can hook you up if you’re interested. Instant healing.”
Chuck had no more interest talking to his employees. Especially about blood drinking. “If you do heal faster, please let me now. Focus on your health,” he said to Kate. See? He wasn’t a total asshole he did want his employees to be at their best. “Break’s over in ten,” he added to Tyler before heading back to the bar to get the drink he was craving.
“Got it, boss,” Tyler said, nodding toward Chuck as the man headed toward the bar. Tyler probably didn’t need ten minutes to check up on Kate, but he wasn’t going to say no to the break. “You been doing okay with the injury?” he asked Kate.
“Thank you, Mr. Bass,” Kate said, ever polite to her boss. She turned her attention back to Tyler once Chuck headed back into the front. That’d gone better than her last meeting with him--when she’d broken that guy’s nose in the parking lot. At least this time it really wasn’t her fault she had to miss work.
“I’m okay,” She frowned a little. “I can’t shoot an arrow, can’t pour a cup of coffee. It’s driving me nuts a little.” Losing the use of her arm was pretty much devastating. She was downplaying it by a lot.
With the amount of sports Tyler was involved with, he’d been injured a couple of times throughout his life. He knew how much it sucked to need to lay around, not able to do all the things that he loved. But he didn’t worry about that so much anymore. He didn’t heal as fast as vampires, but he could normally heal from most injuries these days within the day. “I know how that can be. What the hell happened to you anyway?”
“I got shot.” Kate said, simply. Because that was what happened, wasn’t it? She would have shrugged her shoulders, only she didn’t want to hurt herself. She’d already pulled out one of the stitches and had to have Clint fix her back up again. “I was in this convenience store, and it got robbed. Thankfully, the dude who robbed the place was an idiot, and got taken down after the shot, but… that fucking sucked hardcore.” Kate made a new friend out of the deal, though. So that was cool.
“Next time you’re caught in a robbery, it might be a good idea to get out of the way of the gunfire,” Tyler said, lightly teasing. He knew that Kate could probably hold her own against people, but guns were an entirely different matter. “I hope you heal up quick, Kate.”
Kate chuckled. “Yeah, absolutely. I’ll keep that in mind.” She said, giving him a wink. “All right, I’ll let you get back to work. I’m sure I’ll be around. I won’t have much else to do while I’m not working and not at the firing range and not doing anything of any value.” It was supposed to be a joke, but came out pretty bitter. “Anyways, you have a good one. I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Come in for some drinks sometime,” Tyler said, giving her a friendly clap on the shoulder. The one that hadn’t been shot. He wasn’t that big of a dick. “Tipping me has value, you know.”
Hey, keeping to the good shoulder was totally okay. Kate appreciated that he was careful. She grinned. “Oh, I know. Maybe I will. I’ll likely be bored enough to.” She teased, then turned toward the door. “It’ll be fun to mix booze with my meds!” She called back to him on her way out.
