Steve had been wearing her down on announcing their pregnancy to people for a week or two now and she had relented to letting the people closest to her in the secret, which included Sharon. She hadn’t even told her own parents right away because she was nervous about the possibility of a miscarriage and wanted to wait until she was in the second trimester. But she decided a few days ago to let her parents know much to their shock and surprise, but they had eventually come around to the idea and were already starting to discuss when they were going to come visit. Next on her list was to let Sharon know because doing it via text message was so not cool.
She had used texts to arrange a time to come over and was a little nervous about it when she arrived at Sharon’s place. She had brought over an edible arrangement as a “housewarming” gift now that Bucky had moved in. After ringing the bell she shifted the arrangement in her arms as she waited for Sharon to answer the door.
Sharon’s apartment was definitely big enough for herself, Bucky and Viv. She and Bucky shared the master bedroom, and Viv took the spare. The couch pulled out to a bed, so they could host someone, but hadn’t yet since Bucky moved in. It was the honeymoon phase, and they were still blissfully happy. Bucky had taken Viv out for the evening so Sharon and Peggy could hang out together.
Sharon wasn’t planning anything special. This was Peggy. Family. She hadn’t set up anything, and was cleaning in her pajamas when Peggy rang the bell. She answered the door, grinning. “Hey! ...Wow! What’s this?” The Edible Arrangement looked amazing.
“Consider it a second housewarming gift now that you have a certain someone living with you,” Peggy held it out to her cousin with a smile on her face, “Besides, everyone loves chocolate covered fruit and I won’t complain if we eat it all before Bucky gets a chance to even see it.” Because let’s be honest, the two of them would devour this entire thing by themselves and it will just be a secret between the two of them.
Sharon beamed as she accepted the arrangement from Peggy. “Thank you! This is beautiful.” And she turned to lead the way into the kitchen. “...maybe we should take a picture,” Sharon smirked softly. Because of course the two of them were going to eat the whole thing. She was certain of it. “I can text him the picture of it before we start eating, but that might make him come home quickly enough to try and steal our chocolate covered fruit.” She smirked.
“That is completely up to you. I leave the fate of the fruit up to you, love,” Peggy pointed out with a laugh as she stepped inside the house and followed her cousin along to the kitchen, “You might want to put a few pieces inside the fridge for him. He deserves at least a little bit of the gift that I brought over. I’d feel slightly bad if we ate the entire thing.” It was important that Bucky got some of the gift and it wasn’t just the two of them eating it.
Sharon settled the arrangement on the counter and then pulled out her phone to take a picture. Once that was done, she motioned toward it as if offering Peggy the first bite. “You’re right. Which pieces do you think I should set aside for him?” She asked, but then she picked a couple and set them on a plate. Hopefully Peggy would pick out a couple, too, and they could put it all in the fridge for Bucky to eat later.
“Just a few. We’ll see how far along we get and maybe there’ll be a few more left over for him,” Peggy couldn’t help but chuckle as she pulled a few pieces off to add to Sharon’s pile. It was a decent sized pile of fruit for Bucky to enjoy later and Peggy made sure that there were a few chocolate covered pieces for him. They needed to let him have some fun, right? “How are things going, well?”
“Really good.” Sharon replied, grinning at replying good to Peggy’s well. It was just one of those things. Colloquial talk. Peggy was very British, and Sharon was very American. Sharon put the plate for Bucky in the fridge, then turned to start digging into the edible arrangement herself. Watermelon was the best. And chocolate covered anything. “We’re settling into a routine. Bucky watches Viv most days, which saves a lot in daycare. And Aramis and Porthos are moving back. We’ll be one big, happy family again.”
“That sounds great and didn’t know Aramis and Porthos were coming back - that’ll be great for Viv. And is Bucky looking for potential work?” It was great of him to watch Viv, but Peggy knew he would probably grow tired for it unless he figured out being a stay at home manny was his thing. She popped a couple pieces of fruit into her mouth before clearing her throat and looking at Sharon, “So I came here for a reason. I have to tell you something and I wanted to make sure to do it in person because it’s fairly important.” Way to downplay it, Peg.
“I’m not really sure.” Sharon said, frowning softly. She probably should talk to Bucky at some point about what his long-term career plans were. Right now he was probably just collecting disability? Or something? They hadn’t talked too much about it because Sharon thought it might make him feel uncomfortable. He already talked about how he felt like “less of a man” and she didn’t want him to think she was judging him for not having a paying job.
“Wow, what a lead in,” Sharon said, suddenly serious and reaching for the next piece of fruit. “I’m nervous now. Is everything okay?”
“Really?” Okay, the side-eye might be strong right now, but she was trying her best to not make it too harsh. Who jumped into a relationship and moved in together without finding out the hopes, goals, and future plans of the other person. Money was an important issue and Peggy was resisting the urge to shake her cousin and ask what in the world she thought she was doing. But that wasn’t what she was here for and it wasn’t something for her to stick her nose into - it might become an issue down the road, but she wasn’t going to be the one to initiate it.
“For the most part. I just wanted to let you know that Steve and I are expecting a child together,” Peggy didn’t like beating around the bush. Might as well tell Sharon straight instead of dragging it out and causing Sharon to stress over nothing.
Sharon inhaled a piece of fruit and coughed. She cleared her throat a few times, staring wide-eyed at her cousin. Then swallowed. “What? Peggy! Oh my God!” She was thrilled, though, grinning as her eyes watered. Swallow the food, Sharon, don’t inhale it.
A concerned look passed over Peggy’s face when Sharon basically choked on a piece of fruit. “Are you okay?” she really didn’t want to perform the heimlich maneuver, but if she had to then she would, “And yes, you heard correctly. I’m almost to the end of my first trimester. I was trying to keep it quiet until we got there, but Steve convinced me we should tell people closest to us. So, please don’t go telling others until we get a chance after the first trimester is over.”
“Oh my God!” Sharon exclaimed, then stepped over to wrap her arms around her cousin. “That’s amazing! Congratulations!” She gave Peggy a little squeeze, then pulled back. Man! It was so exciting! Peggy and Steve were going to be parents! Sharon had a bunch of stuff she could absolutely pass on to Peggy to save them some money. And Viv was getting a second cousin! How amazing was that? “This is wonderful! How are you feeling?”
The hug shouldn’t have come a surprise, but it kind of did since Peggy wasn’t one for much affection with people. She couldn’t help but smile as she returned the hug to her cousin and blushed at how excited Sharon was about it all. “Thank you, it’s a very big surprise, but I’ve come around in my excitement. Steve is far more excited to be a parent. I’m feeling alright - it was fairly bad for a while, but it’s slowly gotten better.”
“Steve’s going to be an amazing dad,” Sharon said, grinning brightly at her cousin. She was super happy for Peggy and Steve. “I’m glad you’re through the worst of it. At least, I hope you are. Things should get easier in the sickness department, yeah?” She moved back over to have some more of the fruit. “No more booze for you, then.” Sharon was thankful she hadn’t pushed more wine on her cousin.
“I think he will be. He’ll make up for my sorry excuse parenting,” Peggy prided herself on her ability to handle all situations, but she didn’t think parenting would be up there in things she excelled at. At least not at first, but it would come around eventually, “Almost to the end of it. I think that it’ll ease up with the second trimester happening. Keep your fingers crossed for me. And unfortunately no booze, which is awful because right now is when I could truly use some.” That part made her laugh as she reached over to grab some fruit.
“Oh, don’t be silly,” Sharon said, a little scold for her cousin. “You’re going to be amazing. The pair of you. No one’s ever really prepared for it, but you’re gonna take to it, I think. Parenting, you know what I mean. It’s quite the trip.” Sharon had thrown Bucky into the deep end, only to find he was swimming gracefully. She was both thankful and honored to have him as her partner, and knew that Steve and Peggy would be a wonderful team. “Well, you can have as much chocolate as you like. That’s the good part.”.
“Well, thank you for the vote of confidence. I’m sure I’ll come around to it eventually,” Peggy knew it would take some time and thankfully Steve would be the only one around to watch her fumble with something. Her training thus far wasn’t going to prove to be much of a help just yet, “And yes, all the chocolate. Let’s grab the rest of the fruit off this thing and go sit down on the couch.” Getting off her feet sounded heavenly right now and since the big news was out of the way they would chat about other things.
