Tonight was date night for Sirius and Lily and she couldn’t wait to just spend time with her boyfriend and forget about the fact that school was starting up and their summer together was almost over. She had set things up for a picnic out on the beach where they could watch the stars and she was also mulling over some important questions on her mind. Her master's program would be wrapping up soon and she would have to start thinking about what she wanted to do next with her life. Working at the museum was certainly an option and she was tempted to look outside of Orange County and possible commute if needed it.
But these were things that she wanted to talk to Sirius about because he was an important part of her life and she wasn’t going to run the risk of leaving him again. She finished packing the basket with the food for the evening and grabbed a couple of beach towels for them to spread out on the sand. Just as she finished gathering her things she heard the buzzer and went to go greet Sirius with a large smile.
The dreams had taken a bit of a toll on Sirius. He looked a little thinner, but not overly so and the circles under his eyes were darker than normal. It had more to do with the fact that he wasn't sleeping as much as he was used to, but it was what it was. There was little anyone could do to keep the dreams at bay, and so Sirius just tried to take it one day at a time. He'd escaped Azkaban, one of the only people to do so, and had made his way to find Harry.
He hadn't meant to scare him, he'd only wanted to see him. Sirius figured he needed to tell Lily about this, but first, he greeted her with a smile. "Hello, love." He leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. "Here, let me take that." He reached forward to take the basket from her. "So, how's your day been?" He offered her his arm to take while they made their way to the beach.
Not speaking about the changes she saw in Sirius was the hardest part for Lily, but she knew that he didn’t want to discuss it. He could obviously see it happening and other people most likely commented on it, but it was still a little worrisome. She spent a lot of time trying to get him to eat a bit more and make sure he was sleeping when they were together. But those thoughts left her head when he came into the house and kissed her.
A happy murmur escaped as she returned the kiss, “Mmm, thank you, dear. And day has been fine, nothing too exciting. What about you?” She grabbed her keys as they made their way out of the apartment and towards the beach, locking up behind her, and slipped her hand into his free one. It was nice to just be with him and she couldn’t believe that it was coming up to a year that they had been together.
"Good." He was glad to hear that her day had been fine, he'd rather it be boring than crazy as the OC tended to be more often than not. "So far so good. I actually slept rather well last night, even though you can't really tell it." Sirius was quite aware of how he looked, and he hoped that eventually he'd be able to catch back up on his sleep.
"I did have another dream though." He waited until she was beside him, and they were on their way down toward the beach. "I escaped Azkaban finally." He glanced over at her with a small smile, "First person to ever do it, as far as I know." He cleared his throat, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "Then I went to find Harry." He was silent for a few moments, "I wanted to make sure that he was okay. He was getting on the Knight Bus, I suppose he'd had enough of living with your sister."
“Oh my gosh, you escaped?” Lily’s green eyes were more bright than usual. That was a feat in and of itself because no one was supposed to ever escape Azkaban. It had never been heard of it and she couldn’t believe that Sirius had done it. That was amazing to hear because now he could get out and live a semi-normal life and not be stuck in that hellhole, “How in the world did you escape?”
But then he was speaking about how he went to find Harry. She stopped walking and stared at Sirius in surprise, “You...you saw him? Oh Sirius. I can’t believe he would leave Petunia’s house - it must be so awful there. How did he look?” There were a million questions flooding her mind now that Sirius had seen Harry and so had Remus, but both men could give her very different information on her son. What she would give to see him in her dreams as he grew up.
He gave a nod, "I did indeed." It was a feat that he was proud of, although he knew that they would be after him before much longer. "I turned into Padfoot a lot. The Dementors don't exactly sense animal emotions that well, so they couldn't get to me nearly as bad. I saw…" he shook his head, "The Weasley's have apparently adopted Peter, who is still in his rat form by the way, so there's no way that they know it's him. I knew though, I'd seen him a thousand times." Plus there was the fact that he was missing a toe, and it was the same toe (well finger) that he'd cut off during their altercation.
Sirius glanced over at her, "I did." He gave a small nod and then sighed. "A little thin, but he looks exactly like James cept he's got your eyes. I think that, in the grand scheme of things, he's alright though. I scared him, I was still Padfoot when I saw him, but I know they're going to be looking for me so it wasn't exactly as if I could run up to him and say, 'I'm Sirius Black, your godfather that just so happened to recently have escaped Azkaban.'"
“Oh….that is actually a brilliant plan. They don’t think of animals like they think of us humans. That is a great way to keep yourself somewhat sane while in there. I’m not going to lie, I’m quite pleased that you’re the first person to get out of there alive. You didn’t deserve to be in there anyway,” Lily pointed out and then frowned when he said that Peter was still alive in his animagus form, “What the hell? Seriously? I can’t believe he’s managed to live this long. What little prat. I want to murder him myself now.”
“Oh gosh...I can only imagine what he looks like,” Lily gave a dreamy sigh at the idea of it. That was so sweet that he looked like James and had her bright green eyes. Oh how she wished she could see him with her own eyes, “Oh gosh, can’t believe you scared him. And you should have gone up to him with that - I’m sure he would have taken it quite well.” That last part was spoken with a laugh and she leaned over to kiss him.
Sirius gave a small sideways tip of his head, "I am smart sometimes." He gave her a wink and then chuckled, "No, but it was hard trying to convince them otherwise." Sirius had no idea how he'd truly managed to survive, he could still feel a little of himself starting to crack during the times that he had to be human while in the prison. There were whispers, screams that still haunted his dreams, but he didn't want to mention that. It was too much, to be honest. "Yeah, me either." He'd been kept sane by knowing that he was innocent, along with the ability to turn into Padfoot, but the moment he saw Peter he knew he had to get out and expose him for the rat that he was.
He smiled at her dreamy sigh, and then lifted a shoulder. "Well, I mean, big dog coming at you and all that." He really hadn't meant to scare him, but it had happened. "He might've, who knows, but I do know that I've got it in my head to keep him safe and to find Peter while I'm at it." Sirius returned the kiss, "So, what's the plan then?"
It seemed like the time to change the subject from his time in Azkaban and she gave him a smile as they found a spot on the beach to spread their stuff out. “Well, we’re going to eat, maybe make out, and I have a few questions for you,” she explained to him as she grabbed the towels and began to spread them out on the sand. The sunset was happening already and they had a prime view to it and soon enough the stars would be coming out, “And I have to say that I’m glad Harry’s got you watching out for him. If James and I can’t do it then there’s nothing better than you and Remus. As long as Peter keeps his hands off him.”
Once the towels were down she sat down and began to dig into the basket to lay out the food, “So, I wanted to ask you a question that is probably a little silly, but you never know. School is starting up and I’m almost finished up with my master’s program and I’ve got to start thinking about where I want to work once I graduate. But part of that is keeping you around since I don’t want to run off again and not have you with me. So, I was wondering if what your thoughts are on living together - in the future.”
Giving a thoughtful nod, Sirius laughed. "I like the sound of this." He waggled his brows over at her, carefully setting the basket down once she'd spread the towels out. "I'll do my best." Sirius would do his best to look out for Harry as much as he could although he knew he was going to have to do it from a distance at this point. Life wasn't fair, his definitely hadn't been in the dreams, but he was happy with the way his life was going here. "I'll be sure that Peter doesn't lay his hands on him." Even if it cost him his freedom, Sirius was determined to not let the rat touch his godson.
He glanced over at her as she began talking, a half smile tugging up one corner of his mouth. He was glad that she didn't want to run off again, honestly, Sirius would've followed her anywhere. He could teach surfing just about anywhere, or even swim lessons if it came down to it. "I'd like that, love. We'll definitely make it work." Sirius leaned over, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek.
“I knew you would, cheeky boy,” Lily wrinkled her nose at him and let out a chuckle. She knew what the plan for the evening would be right up his alley. Who wouldn’t want to have a night that involved food and kissing the person you loved? “You have my permission to kill him there if you have to. Might as well do the crime you spent time in Azkaban in.” She knew it wouldn’t make a difference, but she honestly did want Peter gone. He was a liar and a horrible person. Oh how she wished she could fix her dreams and not let Peter be the secret keeper because that would have solved so many problems.
“Oh good,” Lily said with a deep sigh of relief, a smile appearing on her face from his kiss, and turned to him, “I was afraid you wouldn’t want to because James is your best friend. It’ll be weird breaking the two of you up. Have you thought about going back to school or anything like that?” She didn’t mind him teaching surfing lessons, but she wanted to make sure he was attempting to live to his full potential and if he truly didn’t want to go to college for anything then she would never bring it up again.
With a laugh, Sirius shrugged. "I'm a simple man." He thought that it would be a grand night, and afterward they could go back to her place for a bit of rough and tumble. "Believe me, if I have the chance? I will." He wouldn't hesitate either since Peter deserved to actually die. It didn't have anything to do with the fact that he'd been stuck in Azkaban for 13 years, but that he'd killed James and Lily.
"It was bound to happen eventually." Sirius replied with a shrug of his shoulders, surely James would be aware of that fact and respect the progression of his and Lily's relationship. Besides, the beach house was his and if he needed to he could put it on the market if Lily didn't want to live there. "I've thought about it. I might go back for business school in order to see if I can run my own surf shop one day, or I might go back to surf school." He offered her a smile, "I mean, I could get higher levels on my surf instructor license, but I'm not fully decided yet." Sirius would figure it out eventually, at least, he thought that he would.
“I’m happy about that one,” Lily commented with a smile. It meant it was easy to please him and they had a very lovely relationship. She snuggled up next to him when she finally finished putting all the food out and shook her head gently at his comment, “He certainly deserves it.” Peter was basically the scum of the earth and she wouldn’t bat an eye if he left their world.
However, she did feel a bit weird about breaking up the duo of James and Sirius. “I know, but I feel kind of bad. I want you all to myself though. But we’ve got some time to figure that out. And business school would be a good idea, no offense dear, but you can’t be a surf instructor for the rest of your life,” she didn’t try to poke and prod at Sirius to do better with his life, but she knew he was talented and she didn’t want to see it go to waste, “But we’ve got time to think about that as well. Let’s just enjoy this evening for now.”
He smiled softly as Lily snuggled up to his side, and he took in a deep breath. "Yeah, exactly." His brows furrowed slightly, "I could be.They always say do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life. I'd rather be happy, than in a job that I hate, you know? So we'll see." Sirius would eventually figure out what else he wanted to do with his life, if that included school so be it, if not? It wouldn't be the end of the world in his opinion.
"Sounds good to me love." He leaned over to press a soft kiss against the top of her head, content for the moment to just enjoy their evening. Seeing as how they didn't get to enjoy a lot in their dreams, this was rather nice, to just be and not worry about a war that felt as if it'd lasted three lifetimes.
