Shopping wasn't something that Claire really looked forward to. Typically she'd pick up what she needed while she was at work, but today she did have to go pick up some clothes that fit a little looser over her ever growing belly. She had started to show, and with each passing day her excitement grew.
She'd tossed a few pairs of sweats into her cart, plus a few pairs of khakis that were bigger in size into her cart. It wasn't a lot, but it was a small start. She was wandering about the store when she came across the baby section. A light smile tugged up the corners of her lips and she turned down the aisle.
There were plenty of frilly dresses for little girls, and adorable short suits for little boys. Claire wondered, if not for the first time, what they would be having since they hadn't found out yet. Claire reached out, letting her fingers brush over the soft fabric of one little pink onesie and then she kept moving. Of course, she could always settle for gender neutral stuff, just so you know, she could have a few things tucked away. If she spent a little every few weeks out of her paycheck for clothes, and other necessities she should have enough things bought up for their little one. Claire paused in front of another little rack of onesies, these all greens, and yellows with things like ducks and frogs printed on them.
Reaching out, she picked up a green one with a light smile on her face.
Sharon was in the baby section, looking for some warm things for Viv to wear now that she’d outgrown practically everything. She was already in the eighteen month size clothes, even though she was just a little past twelve. After grabbing a couple new pair of leggings and a sweatshirt, she turned to look at some onesies. Should she get a couple of those, or were they going to start potty training? Probably the onesies.
She smiled at the other woman looking at onesies, too. “Boy or girl?”
Claire laughed softly and then looked over at the other woman. "We're not sure yet. We're supposed to find out in a couple of weeks." Claire thought for a moment, "Yes, a couple of weeks." She was pretty sure that was when her appointment for her ultrasound was, but she'd have to double check once she was home. "Still, I figure it's never too early to get a few things to put back now." Now meaning that they were out of the danger zone. "Are those for your little one?" She asked, giving a small nod of her head to the leggings and sweatshirt that Sharon was holding.
Sharon nodded. “Oh! Congratulations!” She remembered how nauseated she was in the first trimester, but if the mid-point ultrasound was only a couple weeks away, that meant this woman was probably well past the danger zone, and hopefully past the morning sickness. “No no, I think it’s wise to be prepared! And I couldn’t help myself, either. I picked up a bunch of things, too.” It was hard to resist.
“Yes. She’s just turned a year, but she’s already outgrowing all her twelve month clothes.” Sharon said, holding up the sweater she’d been examining.
Laughing, Claire gave a small nod of her head. "Thank goodness I'm not crazy for thinking that I should pick up a few things." She thought it was better to be prepared than not prepared at all, and well, she really couldn't help herself. She didn't think that Dean would mind either. "But thank you. It was quite a surprise, but my boyfriend and I are excited." A small smile tugged up the corners of her lips, and she picked up another onesie.
"Aw, well I hope that she had a very happy first birthday." Goodness, it was hard to think that she was going to be a mother herself, and well, she was excited about it all. "That's adorable, and do they really outgrow their clothes that fast?"
“I think most of the time it’s a surprise,” Sharon said, grinning softly. “But I’m happy for you. Welcome to the sisterhood of mothers.” She remembered when she’d found out about her own pregnancy with Viv, and how excited and terrified she’d been. She remembered how her boyfriend at the time dropped off the face of the planet because of it. But things had turned out well in the long run. She was with a man she loved, looking forward to adding to their beautiful family.
“They really do,” Sharon added, grinning. “I wouldn’t bother buying much in newborn size. Especially diapers. You can always fold over the waist of size 1’s.”
With a laugh, Claire gave a small sideways tip of her head. "That's fair enough." She wasn't sure how things were going to work out, but she had a feeling that they would work out for the best. Claire was, at any rate, quite excited and looking forward to motherhood. "Thank you, I appreciate it." Claire wasn't concerned about Dean going anywhere, and she knew that he was in it for the long haul just as she was.
Claire turned all of her attention to Sharon, giving a small nod. "Thank you for that information. I wouldn't have thought about it, to be honest." Claire was open to any and all suggestions, or information from other moms out there since she had absolutely no idea what she was doing. "Do you have any more little tidbits of info for a first timer?"
“Oh, I’ve got all kinds of tips.” Sharon said, smiling warmly. She wasn’t being boastful, she was honestly hoping to help this other woman. Moms had to stick together, and Sharon was more than willing to give any assistance she could to anyone about to take that path. “I could probably fill a book with them! Actually, I should do that. Since I find that I keep forgetting things as the time goes by. They grow at ludicrous speeds.”
Sharon dug into her purse and pulled out a business card. She held it out for the other woman. “Here’s my card. You can email me anytime you want, I’ll answer any questions you may have. Or, I’ve got resources, too, if I don’t know the answer.”
"Great, I really do have a feeling I'll need all the help I can get." Claire wasn't ashamed to ask for help, in fact, she was more than happy to ask for it when she needed it. Claire could understand all too well, about forgetting things that is. Her memory was getting better, admittedly, but there were still times that she had to reference things she'd written down for herself. "You should, I'm sure that it would help someone like me out there."
Claire switched the clothes over to her other hand, giving a small nod as she took the business card. "Thanks." She smiled softly, tucking the card down into the back pocket of her jeans. "Believe me, I'll e-mail you if I have any questions." Claire would too, and it might help Dean too to know that she had a contact out there that had some answers for them in regards to normal things. "Thank you, again. I'm Claire Redfield, by the way." She thought it was only appropriate to introduce herself.
“Sharon Carter.” Sharon replied with a smile. She was glad that the other woman was going to give her a call. It was nice to make friends, especially those who were in approximately the same boat. New moms had to stick together, for sure. “It’s a pleasure.” But then it was time to head off. Sharon had things to do, and she was sure Claire did, too. “I’ll talk to you soon, I hope.”
"Same to you." Claire gave a small nod of her head in Sharon's direction with a smile on her face. "Oh you definitely will hear from me soon I'm sure." Claire laughed softly, and then took a step back away from the baby clothes. "I'll see you later, Sharon." Claire repeated her name if for no other reason than to remind herself of Sharon's name even if she had her card. Old habits died hard.
