As soon as Hanna told Caleb about what happened with Katou, he wanted to confront his so called friend. Who the hell did Katou think he was? Hitting on Hanna like that. Of course he had gotten sick the next day and couldn't do shit about it but now that he was feeling better he was going to get some fucking answers.
He arrived at Katou’s house and banged on the doors “Open up, dude,” he yelled out his voice filled with rage.
Katou’s stomach sank a little when he heard Caleb banging on his door. He should have known that that Hannah chick would be a little snitch. Calling him a creep before she stormed out was easy enough. Katou’d shrugged and slipped out without much of an explanation, leaving a confused Caleb and a nearly full case of beer behind. He’d hoped it would be dropped at that.
But nope. Apparently not so much. Leave it to Hannah to not know when to keep her mouth shut. “Jesus man,” Katou said, opening the door and grinning. “You’re gonna break down my door at that rate. I thought I was passed that stage of my life when I got a bulletproof window.”
As soon as the door opened Caleb’s first instinct was to punch Katou. Just like he had with that intern that had made Hanna uncomfortable. Or with Zack in the dreams. But neither of those people were Caleb’s friends. He would give Katou at least a chance to explain himself.
“Maybe you shouldn’t go around hitting on your friend’s girlfriends then,” he spat fists clenched at his side. “Seriously, what the fuck, man?”
“Dude, I was just joking around,” Katou said, shrugging with his palms up and looking almost amused. “I had no idea she’d overreact like that.”
Caleb knew that Hanna was impulsive at times. But she had been genuinely upset and she wouldn’t have been for no reason. “She didn’t think it was funny,” Caleb replied his hand twitching.
“Fine, alright,” Katou said, his expression turning from amused to almost bored. “I wanted to see if she’d cheat on you. You want a beer?”
That was an even worse explanation than the joke thing. “No. I don’t want a beer,” Caleb replied his anger rising. Usually he wouldn’t turn down a beer, but Katou had made moves on Hanna and didn’t even seem apologetic about the whole thing. “I want you to stop making excuses. Hanna doesn’t deserve to be tested or whatever the fuck you were trying to do.”
“What, so if she was gonna jump into bed with some guy she’s just met you’d rather not know about it?” Katou asked, raising an eyebrow. Even if Caleb didn’t want a beer, Katou sure did. He turned his back to Caleb and headed toward the kitchen.
Caleb stomped into the house behind Katou. He wasn’t getting away that easily. “Hanna wouldn’t jump into bed with someone she just met. Or anyone else for that matter. Ever heard of trusting your girlfriend? Or your friend’s girlfriend?!”
Katou shrugged. “Well, I figured that out,” he snorted. “But yeah, I heard of it. I also heard of Santa Claus. Don’t mean I expect a unicorn under the tree every Christmas.”
“Really?” Caleb spat. “Because in this place you never fucking know.” Both Santa Claus and unicorns could very well be real for all Caleb knew. But that wasn’t the point. “I love Hanna. If you’re my friend you’d believe I wouldn’t be dumb enough to fall for a girl that would just fuck the first guy she saw.”
Maybe Caleb had a point. If weird lizard-people could walk out of portals and wreak havoc among the citizenship, maybe Santa Claus, Unicorns, and Faithful Girlfriends could exist. And yet Katou could still feel himself getting unreasonably pissed about it. He whirled on Caleb. “Yeah, well, maybe I’m not your friend,” he snapped. He regretted it almost before the words were out of his mouth. That wasn’t at all what he’d meant to say.
Caleb was shocked into silence for a moment. Really he should have seen that coming though. Because what friend would hit on Hanna? “Right,” Caleb finally said. “Well now that that’s cleared up I don’t feel so bad about this.” With that Caleb lifted his fist, swinging right at Katou.
Katou saw the fist coming, though he did nothing to stop it. If he was totally honest with himself, he probably deserved it. His head snapped back, but he didn’t lose his footing. He clenched his fist, but resisted the nearly overwhelming urge to punch Caleb back. After all, he could probably do a lot more damage to Caleb than Caleb could to him.
Once he fought down the urge to fight back, he wiped his smarting mouth with the back of his hand. “We even?” he asked, looking at a very interesting spot to the right and a little in front of Caleb’s shoe.
Well, Caleb felt a little better. Less angry, more hurt. But whatever there wasn’t much else that could be done here. He shook out his hand, he was going to have to ice it probably. “Yeah, we’re even.”
“Cool,” Katou said. He winced a little when he offered Caleb a tentative half-smile. “You want that beer now? It’s cold.”
“No,” Caleb said shaking his head. “I think we’re done here,” as was their non existent friendship apparently. “Have a nice life,” Caleb spat turning on his heel to leave.
