It was Caroline’s favorite time of year. Time to shop for her back to school wardrobe. And this was probably going to be the last time she ever did this. Considering it was her last year of school and all. She couldn’t think of anyone she’d rather spend it with than Anna.
“Dresses first?” Caroline asked eyes shining with excitement. Other than planning and organizing this was definitely her area of expertise.
Anna was bouncing alongside Caroline, filled to the brim with Thai Iced Tea. She was very much looking forward to trying on some new clothes, getting some new supplies. She’d missed hanging out with Caroline every day at the house. Hopefully they’d get to hang out after school started.
“Dresses! Yes! I’m planning on having lots of reasons to wear them.” Anna beamed. She turned to look into the window of a shop as they passed, wondering what was in style this fall.
Caroline wore dresses on a daily basis. Especially in the summer time, and spring, and fall. Even though it didn’t get super cold in the winter she dressed a bit warmer. But she didn’t have to worry about it now. So dresses it was. And sweaters to go with them. And shoes! They had a full day ahead of the, “Lots of reasons?” Caroline asked as they walked into a store.
“You know, lots of reasons! School mixers and going out dancing and stuff.” Anna said, giving Caroline a grin. She gravitated instantly toward a green dresses she saw against one wall. The shop was mostly filled with pinks and greys, but Anna always went to the greens.
“Oh. I thought you meant for your boyfriend,” Caroline teased though she really had no idea if that was what Wash was. Caroline headed off toward the floral print dresses. Selecting a white one with pink and red flowers and a light blue one with lots of tiny white flowers on it.
Anna flushed at the word boyfriend. She shook her head. “He’s not my boyfriend! He’s just… a friend. And a boy.” Who she occasionally slept with. “Though… he’s really kind. And very handsome. And oh my God does he make my toes curl.” She blushed even deeper, and cleared her throat. “But we’re just friends.”
“Sounds like a boyfriend to me,” Caroline said with a knowing smile. Though it wasn’t like she could really talk. She had insisted Peeta was just her friend for awhile. Now look at them. But Anna? She didn’t know Anna was the friends with benefits type. She always seemed to do relationships. This might be good for her though. As long as she didn’t get hurt.
It was probably obvious to everyone (even to Anna) how fond of Wash she was. She wasn’t seeing anyone else. She’d stopped dating Minato because of him. But Anna wasn’t about to admit how special he was to her, how hard she’d fallen for him. She couldn’t. Not when they’d established early on that they were just friends. That’s what Wash wanted. Besides, Anna had school coming up soon, and she was taking a bajillion units this quarter. She didn’t want to let a boy distract her. She’d already screwed up her GPA in the spring.
“No no, he’s not,” Anna replied, shaking her head. “I mean, we’re just having fun. He makes me feel safe and comfortable, and I like spending time with him. But he doesn’t want a girlfriend, so we’re just friends.”
“Anna,” Caroline began voice soft. She stopped looking at the dresses and turned to face her friend. “What about what you want? That’s important too.” It was certainly more important to Caroline than what Wash wanted. Friend of Peeta or not.
“No, I know,” Anna said, giving Caroline a smile. It was tentative, though. Small. “I really like the way things are going, and I don’t want to mess that up. I really wanted a summer boyfriend, but maybe that’s just what I thought I wanted? Maybe I just wanted some summertime fun,” she went bright pink. “Besides, school’s coming up. I don’t know if I’ll have time for a boyfriend.”
This still didn’t sound like Anna. “Juggling a boyfriend and school isn’t that difficult,” Caroline replied. But Peeta was pretty understanding. Besides he had his own things going on anyway. “And it sounds like you really care about him. Maybe you want more than a fling.”
“It is when I’m up all night studying!” Anna argued. “Besides, I’ve got a really good thing going. I don’t want to mess it up. Maybe it’ll move in one direction or another sometime, but for right now I’m just going with the flow. You know?” She was pretty okay with things the way they were. She would like more, but she wasn’t pining for it. At least, not yet.
“As long as you’re happy,” Caroline commented. Of course she was still worried about Anna getting hurt or not getting what she wanted but it was Anna’s life she could do as she pleased. “So which dress?” Caroline asked holding up the pink floral dress and the blue one.
“I love the blue one!” Anna said, reaching out to run her fingers over the fabric of the skirt. “...but I love the flowers, too. If I can’t decide, maybe I should just get both?” That was par for the course for a girl who had never really wanted for anything. Any physical object, that is. Anna had wanted for companionship when she was younger, and now? Now all she wanted was to be loved. And she felt she was getting her wish every day.
“Both is always better.” Caroline agreed. Because why limit yourself? But the blonde definitely had a shopping addiction. One she was pretty sure her boyfriend wasn’t thrilled about but oh well.
“Then I’ll get both!” Anna never really had to worry about money. She had more than she knew what to do with, and people whose main responsibility it was to make sure she never ran out. And having Caroline and/or Stefan and/or Lexi around was great, because it meant that Anna often got a compelled discount. Not that she was desperate for it, but every little bit helps, right?
Anna purchased the dresses at the register, and slung the handles of the bags into the crook of her elbow. “Should we hit up another shop?” She asked as they exited the store.
“Duh!” Was that even a question. Caroline fully intended to spend of the day shopping. Whether Anna was with her or not. She had a whole new wardrobe to compel purchase.
