Who: Maia and Morrigan
What: After a rude awakening, a discussion about moving in together.
When: Recently
Where: Morrigan's home
Warnings: Family friendly
It had been very busy for Maia since she’d gotten back from China. There was semester planning and the first few classes. She also began making plans for possible darkspawn incursions but she kept that to herself for now.
There was something else she wanted to talk about, but how to approach it was another matter. After spending all that time with Morrigan in China, she really rather wanted to make a permanent living arrangement. It didn't hurt that Morrigan’s house was much bigger than her flat, and it certainly helped that they had months worth of dream memories of sharing the road together - though that was decidedly lacking in privacy.
Besides, she spent several nights a week at Morrigan’s as it was. Though why she was laying in bed at three in the morning awake and thinking instead of sleeping was not something she really understood. Her mind kept running around to different topics (several of them entirely too kinky for polite company), and finally she rolled over, and peeled up one of Morrigan’s eyelids. “Love, are you awake?” She figured they should talk and she understood that this was probably not the best seduction technique as a sort of pre talk, but it was 3 am and she wasn’t thinking clearly.
Maia wasn’t the only one who had been busy since returning from China. Not only did she have some clients she needed to take care of, she had been spending some time at Skyhold with Max. She was learning the art of Necromancy, expanding her talents with Entropy a bit further. In return, she was also teaching him Shapeshifting. Her lessons were slower going considering learning to change one’s shape didn’t happen instantly. It took massive amounts of concentration and focus. Maia had finally acquired the knack, but Max was...taking some work.
She was blissfully asleep, lost in a deep sleep. Or she had been before Maia peeled her eyelid open. Morrigan snapped awake, jerking a bit, followed by two yelps. One yelp was from her, startled by Maia suddenly looming there. The other was from one of the cats she’d kicked upon jerking awake.
“What? What is happening?” Because clearly she thought the world must be ending to be woken in such a manner.
Maia had to snap her hand back before her nail poked Morrigan in the eye. The world wasn’t ending, in fact everything seemed to be normal except for Maia’s hysterical laughter. She grabbed her stomach as she doubled over - and laughed herself right off the edge of the bed. Her yelp and flailing sent the rest of the cats scrambling for safety.
The rude awakening was soured more when Maia gave over to a fit of hysterical laughter. When she tumbled off the bed, Morrigan glanced at the clock. And was properly appalled. “What the bloody hell are you doing awake at this hour, let alone waking me up in such a manner?”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Maia said, pulling herself to her feet and making a show of brushing her nude form off. “I’ve had a lot of thoughts.” She grinned down at Morrigan, as though she hadn’t ruffled her fiance’s feathers, and waggled her eyebrows.
Normally Maia’s nude form was rather distracting, but currently Morrigan was more irritated at being woken up so abruptly at an ungodly hour of the morning. “Are you going to make ask what thoughts?” She wasn’t in a mood to play guessing games. She mostly just wanted to go back to sleep.
“Thoughts about us. Not all of them naughty, I promise. Thoughts about what happened in China. Thoughts about what to do here. It’s like my mind won’t bloody shut up.” Maia sank onto the bed. “I thought about seducing you. Is it working?”
It obviously wasn’t working and she wasn’t entirely serious about that part. There were sexier ways to wake someone up, which she’d employed some mornings.
There were better ways to seduce someone, that was for certain. Morrigan just eyed Maia as she sank into bed again. She ignored the question about the seduction working because that was obvious. “Is tea going to be needed?” Because if some sort of talk was going to happen now, Morrigan wanted to be relatively conscious for it. And less cranky than she currently was. Tea would help with both.
“Tea might be needed?” Maia smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry. I’m making you suffer because I couldn’t sleep.” But still, it was nice to have Morrigan awake.
“Tea it is.” Especially since Morrigan clearly needed to think and respond. She slid out of bed and grabbed her silk robe, pulling it on and tying it shut before she made her way out to the kitchen where she put the kettle on. She stretched her back and yawned.
Maia pulled on the extra robe, which reminded her of one of the things she wanted to talk about. Which terrified her in no small part because generally anything involving commitment made her wary about discussing with Morrigan. It was a miracle she’d taken the ring, honestly. And it wasn’t fair, really, not to Morrigan. Maia didtrust her to keep her word. It was the anxiety before that that could sometimes be a problem.
She sometimes expected to wake up in Thedas. The Hero of Ferelden and she couldn’t even get the girl. Maybe she ought to talk to a therapist. She trudged after Morrigan and flopped into a dining room chair.
At normal times of the day when Morrigan was a functional human being, she had thoughts about things with Maia. Such as potentially living together considering the engagement. Morrigan just hadn’t quite had the guts to say these things out loud. She was scared and nervous, but commitment was entirely frightening to her. But she wasn’t running from it. In fact, there were plenty of times during the course of the day where she would look at the ring on her finger and smile. Maybe she could actually make someone else happy in this world considering she was shit at it in Thedas.
Once the tea was ready, she brought the cups over, handing one to Maia. Morrigan had made it just the way Maia liked it. She sat down in a chair across from Maia, sipping the tea. “Alright, what thoughts are you having?”
“Darkspawn. Those holes in the sky you mentioned. Classes. Moving in with you. The fact it’s almost pumpkin spice latte season and I really can’t wait for that.” Maia took the cup and sipped at it as well, closing her eyes. She really was much too wired to sleep, but maybe the tea and the talk would help. “I already have one of those kind of students you want to strangle, because they think they know more than the professor.”
Morrigan instantly felt she should have been more specific in her question, but she took the response in stride. And with a hefty drink of tea. And then the bit about moving set in and she was suddenly more awake. “Moving in?” Because of course that would be the one she’d pursue first. “As in living together?”
Okay, maybe she wasn’t as awake as she thought she was.
Maia was glad she didn’t make Morrigan choke on her tea, though that would have been funny. But of course that would be the one Morrigan would pursue. Maia shrugged one shoulder in a slow, lazy roll. “It was a thought?”
She licked her lips as she felt her heart rate increase a bit. Of course any sort of step in this relationship was a frightening one for her to take. Nevertheless, Morrigan wasn’t running away. She shifted slightly in her chair and tucked some untamed, and probably post-sex, hair behind her ear. “Well, it could be more than a thought.”
“...really?” Maia lifted her head, trying not to stare at the state of Morrigan’s hair. That was always the best look on her. “I mean...I know we’re engaged, but that might still seem too soon for some people.” Especially those with commitment issues. Like both of them if she was honest with herself. “But I really like mornings with you.”
“Technically, tis a partial reality already,” she pointed out considering how often Maia spent the night. The only real difference between actually living together was for Maia to move all of her things in and have Barkspawn around. With was another related topic that would need to be addressed. “I am not opposed to it, though t’would be best to take it in steps. We would need to decide what things of ours to keep and which to sell. There is the question of whether we would live here or find another place entirely.” The only downside to buying another house would be Morrigan’s greenhouse would need to be relocated. She’d finally gotten it organized how she wanted it.
“Then there comes the not so small matter of attempting to introduce Barkspawn to the cats.” Which, in Morrigan’s opinion, was probably the largest issue. She was certain Barkspawn would love the cats, but she was uncertain how the cats would react to a dog. They had never really been around dogs, so that process would take some finesse.
“I have all but moved in,” Maia joked. She even had her own toothbrush, which was serious business indeed. But there were her things, and the mabari. Most of her furnishing she could give away or sell with two or three exceptions. It was the books and nick nacks from her travels she’d have to find a place for. “Most of my furniture is shite and we can sell or give it away.”
And buying a house together? Maia blinked. “Would we need much more room? Are you planning on getting me knocked up?”
“Are you certain? We could make room for whatever you wish to keep. Though I do want to get a new bed.” Morrigan could make room for whatever Maia wanted to keep. More shelving would probably be needed, but that wasn’t difficult to come by. “I am not, though perhaps only because I lack the anatomy to actually do that, and I have not learned of a spell for that.” The fact that Morrigan hadn’t balked at the idea of either of them being pregnant was evidence to the effect the dreams had on Morrigan. There was a maternal side to her, one that she was trying to still deny existed. More or less.
Maia shook her head. “Most of it was second hand. Third hand. Thrift stores and the like. I didn’t have much of anything but my books and collections when I moved back here. I don’t place much value on couches.” She couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows and ask. “And if you found such a spell? Magical test tube baby?”
This was taking a direction she hadn’t expected.
“We can certainly look at what you want to keep and make room for it.” Though the magical test tube baby comment made her blink, pausing with her tea cup at her lips. “I would not cast such a thing without knowing the risks. Having had a child with the soul of an Old God in the dreams, such things are needed to be taken seriously and with careful guidance.” They didn’t need to accidentally create an abomination or some all-powerful magical child on accident. Orange County was already weird enough.
“I was mostly joking.” Maia reached over and put her hand on Morrigan’s arm. “Though if I recall that one still needed the help of someone’s swimmers. I think I can try to narrow some things down. I think it’s only a dozen boxes or so that really matter.”
“Ah. Well, we need not worry about it then.” It’s not like either of them would be accidentally pregnant by the other. Morrigan had dodged her dream pregnancy carrying over to this life. Beyond that, there was little to worry about in that department. “You can bring as much as you want. We can get some more shelves for books and things, there is plenty of space for that.” She didn’t want Maia to get rid of anything she wanted to keep.
“You really are so thoughtful,” Maia said. “I’ve always liked that quality of yours. You always hide it behind acidic comments, but those never really bothered me.”
“I...thank you. Though do not let it get out. I have a reputation to maintain.” Morrigan still wasn’t overly used to getting compliments like that.
“Wouldn’t want people to realize you’re a real softy? Now that’s a bloody shame. But for your dignity I’ll keep that to myself. I know how reputation is.” She winked.
“I do not need people mercilessly teasing me because I am not the bitch they expect me to be.” Morrigan well knew she was a bitch more often than not. It had been her defense mechanism, to keep from getting close to people. She’d thought that she could get through life alone, but she’d been very wrong about that. Both here and in Thedas.
“You’re my bitch and I love you,” Maia countered, knowing full well there were multiple connotations to those words and that if anyone was the bitch in this relationship with was Maia.
“I love you, too,” she said with a smile. Morrigan well knew she wasn’t the friendliest person in the world, despite the fact that she’d actually been getting along with both Leliana and Alistair in this world. Which unsettled her to no end.
It unsettled Maia. Also delighted her, but she wouldn’t say either thing out loud. “Here’s a question. Do you even have a last name here?”
That was certainly a question that probably should have been asked a long time ago. Especially before a proposal happened. Morrigan, however, merely smirked. “Drake, as it happens. Clearly this world has a sense of irony.”
Maia burst into laughter. “Maybe I ought to to take your name, but then I’m not sure I want to give my future mother-in-law the satisfaction of being that much more linked to me.”
“Perhaps I should take your name. The shock of my doing so might just kill my mother. Or at the very least give her a stroke.” Not for the first time, Morrigan seriously hoped her mother would stay well away from Orange County. No one needed Flemeth to start dreaming of her life in Thedas.
“Morrigan Amell. Maia Drake.” Maia tapped her finger against her chin. “They both have rather nice rings to them, don’t you think? But giving your mother a stroke, now that’s tempting.”
And then suddenly a pun became very evident to Morrigan and she couldn’t quite pass it up. “If you take my name, then you would be Mai Drake.” As in ‘my drake.’ Especially if Maia learned to shapeshift into a dragon. Better yet, Morrigan had delivered the pun with a straight face, but there was quite the glimmer in her eyes that said she was laughing on the inside.
Maia stared at Morrigan, mouth hanging open. She shut her mouth and replied. “Well then, I can’t see anything wrong with that. I’m yours, after all.”
But that was bad. So bad. Yet so good. She couldn’t come up with a fitting response.
For once it seemed that Morrigan had gotten the upperhand in witty comments. A grin spread across her face. “And I am yours, love.” She reached out and set her left hand over Maia’s, giving it a squeeze. The light reflected off of the ring with the movement.
Maia couldn’t be happier. She felt a little choked up, and at a loss for words so she just nodded at Morrigan, turning her hand over and stroking her fingers along Morrigan’s palm.
She sipped her tea and let the comfortable silence fall over them for a minute or so. Morrigan kept her hand on Maia’s, fingers lightly stroking her wrist. “Though before anything else in regards to moving in, perhaps you should bring Barkspawn over so that we may introduce him to the cats. It may take a while for them to adjust to him.”
“How about next weekend?” It would give Morrigan time to dogproof the house. Not that Barkspawn wasn’t well behaved, for a dog.
“That would be fine. Also perhaps if you brought over a towel or something that smells like him, the cats could at least start adjusting to the scent.” She didn’t know how her girls would take a mabari’s presence, but there was only one way to find out.
“Well, this ought to be adventure.” Tea finished, conversation had, Maia got to her feet and held out her hand. “I think I can sleep now. I...well maybe not, this is rather exciting.”
Morrigan chuckled softly, reaching out and taking Maia’s hand as she stood up. “Perhaps I should begin referring to you as the energizer bunny?” She quirked a playful eyebrow at Maia.
“I keep coming and coming and coming….”
