Getting together with Veronica for dinner was something that Peggy had been looking forward to for since they planned it a few days ago. She saw Veronica at work, but things had been busy in her personal life, so the two of them hadn’t been able to get together lately. She also wanted to talk to Veronica about how she felt with Sharon having Bucky move in together - both girls wanted to make sure Sharon was making the right moves and truly happy with everything. Peggy didn’t have anything against Bucky since he was Steve’s best friend, but she just wanted to keep Sharon’s best interest in mind.
After arriving to the restaurant she was seated and sent Veronica a text to let her know that she was seated. The waiter came by and Peggy ordered a water and a lemonade. It was still a little odd to not order a glass of wine with dinner, but she was craving something a little sweet to drink. As she waited for Veronica to join her she looked over the menu to decide what she wanted to eat.
Veronica was usually always on time. But today she was just off. She didn’t want to think about why though and just enjoy her dinner with Peggy. She arrived at the restaurant a few minutes after Peggy, the hostess leading her to the table. “So sorry I’m late,” Veronica said as she took her seat. “You been waiting long?”
“It’s totally fine. I only got her a couple minutes before you, love. Sit down - you look a bit harried,” Peggy said it as politely as she could because it definitely seemed like Veronica was stressed about something. The waiter came back over with her water and lemonade just as Veronica sat down and asked her what he could get her to drink. Peggy waited, taking a sip of her lemonade, and glanced at her menu.
Veronica ordered herself a sprite before turning her attention back to Peggy. It was a bit odd that Peggy wasn’t ordering a drink. They did often drink together after all, but this was dinner. Still, why wasn’t she having a drink with her food? The the blonde was a bit curious. “Lemonade?”
At the comment about her drink she blushed because she knew that it wasn’t very common for her to get something other than wine or a cocktail. “Trying to change it up a bit,” that was a very non committal answer, so maybe Veronica wouldn’t be able to pick up on the fact that it was for a very important reason, “You are getting a Sprite.” There we go, turn the tables and put the focus on someone else.
If Peggy was hoping Veronica wouldn’t pick up on something being off she was mistaken. Veronica picked up on most things, no matter how minor. She wasn’t buying the turning the tables back on her bit either. “I didn’t want to drink alone,” Veronica commented back without missing a beat. “Then I’d just feel like an alcoholic.”
A snort and a smirk was given by Peggy as she lightly rolled her eyes. She should have expected a quick remark like that from Veronica, “Well, that is a very astute observation. No one wants to be an alcoholic. What are you thinking of getting?” Peggy wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to eat, but she was leaning towards something with red meat - perhaps a burger or a steak. She had been quite hungry lately.
Of course Veronica caught onto the change of subject. She’d let it slide, for now. But clearly something was up. “Maybe the New York strip.” A steak sounded pretty damn good to her right now as well. But then that was nothing unusual. Veronica was big on steak, burgers, and pizza. “You?”
“Mmm, that sounds good. I was debating between that and a burger. I might do burger because fried eggs, pickles, and sriracha sound really good,” the baby had to be the reason she was even interested in spicy things because she usually didn’t go for that. But suddenly saying it aloud made it sound really good. If she could stay away from pickles and ice cream then she’d be a happy camper.
“Sriracha?” Veronica asked with a raised brow. She couldn’t remember a time Peggy had ever ordered anything spicy. “Sounds like you are having a craving,” she said playfully although she was only half joking. She was beginning to wonder if Peggy was actually pregnant.
There was a faint coloring of her cheeks, but Peggy was good at riding through these kind of situations and she let out a chuckle, “Maybe. A little spicy sounds kind of good right now. I might only ask for a little bit.” Okay so maybe she wasn’t as good as she thought she would be at playing these things coy.
“Never known you to be into that before,” Veronica commented as the waiter came back to take their orders. Veronica placed her order turning her attention back to Peggy once the waiter took off. Again, she wasn’t getting off the hook that easy. “So what’s up with the craving?”
Peggy should have known Veronica was ruthless with her questioning, but it was different to be at the focus of an investigation by her friend. She really couldn’t keep pushing it off because Veronica was probably going to guess it anyway. She and Steve had been trying to figure out when to tell people and she wanted to push it off until she was in her second trimester, but she didn’t think she was going to win that battle. So instead of saying much she gave a little shrug, “Just want to try something new.”
“Something that you don’t usually like?” Veronica usually didn’t let things drop. Not when she had a strong feeling there was something more going on. But she didn’t always push this hard. “No drinks, and random cravings? Sounds to me like you’re pregnant.”
Well, since Veronica guessed it then it was fine to confirm it right? That was Peggy finding a loophole in her own logic about keeping silent for a while until she reached the second trimester. She took a sip of her lemonade and stared at her friend for a moment before letting out a sigh. “Okay, I can’t lie to you. Bloody hell. Yes, I’m pregnant. But -” she held up a hand to stop Veronica from any reaction she might have, “You’re not allowed to tell anyone. I’m trying to keep it quiet for a few more weeks.”
Veronica smiled triumphantly. Proud of herself for figuring it out. Although all the signs were there and she remembered what it was like when Sharon was pregnant. “Congrats,” she said though it lacked the enthusiasm most people said that sort of thing with. Veronica was happy for Peggy if that was what she wanted, but what the fuck was up with all her friends getting pregnant? “Who would I tell?” Well Sharon, and possibly Logan. But Veronica could keep it a secret.
“Thanks..I think...I’m still coming to terms with it,” Peggy pursed her lips for a moment. She was going to have to learn to take the congratulations gracefully, but she was still up in the air on if she was excited or nervous. It was hopefully going to be something good in her life, but a small part of her was scared, “And I haven’t told Sharon yet. The only other person who knows, besides Steve, is Jemma. I was trying to wait until the first trimester was over until I let people know.”
“Makes sense,” Veronica commented. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell her before you get a chance to.” She had however picked up on Peggy’s lack of enthusiasm. “Coming to terms with it? Doesn’t sound all that reassuring, Peg.”
“It’s not something I planned. I’m excited, but a little more scared than excited, to be honest,” Peggy pointed out as the waiter came over and brought them some bread before their dinners came over, “I’m coming around. Steve’s great about it and his happiness is contagious for the most part.”
“I don’t blame you,” Veronica would not pleased if she was pregnant. “It’s good that Steve is happy about it though. Better than him being pissed at least.” Then Veronica would just have to punch him.
“And it hasn’t been rainbows and sunshine the entire time. I’m tired, I’m constantly sick, and I want weird food,” Peggy explained with a laugh, “And if Steve wasn’t fine with it then I would not be speaking him to him any longer.” That was certainly true. She would probably have ended their relationship if he hadn’t been on board with any of this, but Steve was the type that wanted the All American Dream.
“Clearly,” Veronica replied referring to her order. Not that it was extremely odd, but it was odd for Peggy. “But thank god you aren’t gushing about how miraculous pregnancy is. I can not stand that mushy cramp.”
“Oh god no, I’m not going to be doing that for awhile, love,” Peggy admitted with a chuckle as she took a few more bites of the bread and the waiter came with their orders, “I will get mushy later once all this awful stuff is over most likely. And then I’ll probably get all grumpy again when I get near the due date. Now, all this is based off pure speculation.”
“Well…” Veronica paused taking a sip of her sprite. “Good luck with that.”
“I’ll keep you in the loop, so you’re along for the ride,” Peggy threatened with a smile as the waiter placed their food in front of them and she took one last sip of her lemonade before she started eating, “Now, let’s get to eating and just put thoughts of children out of our heads.” At least she knew Veronica would keep the secret and she had someone who was probably on the same page when it came to children.
