It had been great seeing Daryl on her birthday and meeting Rick for the first time too. It was obvious they cared about each other a lot and it had been lovely to see them together. She was glad she’d gotten to know Daryl when he’d been adding the extension onto her shop and that they’d been able to continue a good friendship.
She’d invited him around that afternoon mainly for a catch up but also to ask him about whether he’d be available to put up a greenhouse for her sometime. She’d pay him of course but she wasn’t sure if it was the kind of job he would normally do or not.
Daryl could honestly say it'd been a lot of fun to step out with Rick and the kids for one of the first times since they'd started dating. Daryl still wasn't out to a lot of people, but he didn't hide the fact that he and Rick were together. It wasn't as if anyone from his past was going to find him here, at least, he hoped not anyway. The invitation to come over for lunch at Riza's was too good for Daryl to pass up. He liked her, thought that she was a good friend, and wanted to catch up with her a little more.
He arrived a few minutes late, hands shoved down into the pockets of his worn and stained jeans. Perhaps one day he'd break down and buy newer clothes, but today was not that day. Lifting his hand he gave a knock, "It's Daryl." He spoke loudly enough for her to hopefully hear him, and he waited on her to answer the door.
“Come in, come in” Riza said as she answered the door, “It’s good to see you. How have you been?” she asked as she showed him through to the kitchen. She’d made a selection of sandwiches as well as a large bowl of salad and bowl of crisps too. She knew if anything didn’t get eaten she could either send it home with Daryl or get the boys to polish it all off. They had unending appetites. “I thought it might be nice to eat in the garden” she said since it was a nice day.
"Good to see you too." Daryl replied with a small nod, and a smile at Riza. "Been doing alright. How bout yourself?" He asked, as he followed her into the kitchen. "Sure, I'm fine with that." Daryl didn't mind being outside, hell he worked outside and in the dreams? Well, he was outside more often than not in them. "Here, load me down." He held out his arms, offering Riza a smile.
“I’ve been great thanks. The shops been busy and the boys have been behaving so it’s been nice around here” she told him. With a smile of thanks she handed him a tray with the food on it while she carried out another tray with glasses and a jug of fruit juice as well as another with water. “It was so nice to meet Rick and the kids, thank you again for coming to the BBQ. I don’t usually do much but I thought it might be nice and it was”
"That's good to hear." Daryl replied with a small uplift of one side of his mouth. It was good to hear that the boys were doing well, and that her shop was doing just as good. He followed Riza out with the food, and he gave a nod. "Thanks for inviting us. We all had a real good time." He probably wouldn't do much for his own birthday except maybe have a small get together at the house if Rick was okay with it. "I'm glad you had a good birthday, Riza." Daryl sat the tray down carefully once they were outside, and he took in a deep breath of the afternoon air. It was really nice out, and he was glad she had the forethought to have them eat their lunch outside today.
“Oh you’re welcome it really was nice to see you all” Riza told him, “I couldn’t imagine a better birthday. So how have you been? Is work busy?” she asked as they set down the food and drink. She was glad she’d decided to go outside too, it was a lovely day and enjoying their lunch in the sunshine was a nice way to spend their time.
Daryl gave a small nod of his head, and then he moved to sit down. "That's great." He was happy that she'd had a great birthday. Daryl took in a deep breath, "Yeah, it's been pretty busy. We've been pulling ten hour days in order to get a building done since we're on a bit of a deadline with it. It'll slow down though within the next month." Unfortunately construction work did seem to die down during the fall and winter months, "Least, it should, sometimes it doesn't, but we'll see how things go."
“Be careful, I don’t want anything happening because you’re overworked and tired” she said, her motherly side coming through as it did more often now. “If you get too quiet I have a job for you. If it’s something you’d be interested in” Riza told him, there was definitely no rush for it so whenever Daryl had the time would work well for her. It might help him out too to have something when other things weren’t too busy.
Chuckling softly, Daryl gave Riza a smile. "Don't worry bout me. I'll be alright." Daryl was just getting older, and things weren't as easy when he was in his 30's. Still, he'd be fine, and he knew when it was time for him to back off or ask for help. He quirked a brow as he reached for a sandwich, "Yeah? What do you got in mind?" He asked, before taking a bite.
“I’m thinking about adding a greenhouse to the bottom of the garden, a proper one with brick foundations if you know what I mean” she explained as she took picked up a sandwich, “Just somewhere to grow some more plants, maybe more fruit and vegetables” It was warm enough in California for most things but some species needed constant warmth rather than fluctuating.
As he chewed, Daryl listened carefully to what she wanted. He'd never attempted to build a greenhouse before, but didn't think it would be much harder than building a house. The only thing that would differ would be the walls, roof and adding in an irrigation system for the plants which honestly wouldn't be unlike adding in a sprinkler system for a building. Besides, there were tutorials out there for everything and he was sure that Lowe's had some books that could help him out with that process. "I do know what you mean." Daryl replied once he'd finally swallowed his bite, "That sounds good. I ain't never built one, but I think I could manage. If I don't think I could do it, I could probably get you into contact with someone that could help you out, Riza."
“I knew you were the one to ask, you’re a star Daryl” Riza smiled happily, “Like I said there’s no rush so just whenever you have a quiet period let me know and you can come round and measure and plan and quote and all that sort of thing” she grinned at him. Riza trusted Daryl to know what he was doing and knew she’d be in good hands.
Chuckling, Daryl lifted a shoulder, "I'll do what I can for you, Riza." He gave a nod as he took another bite of his sandwich and then took a deep breath in through his nose, as he chewed. Reaching for his glass, Daryl washed his food down with a swig and he gave a nod. "Sure, shouldn't be too long before things slow down. Then I'll get out here and get what I need." Least, Daryl was thinking that it shouldn't take too much longer before things slowed down and he'd be able to help Riza out.
“Thank you” she said with a smile, she wasn’t in a hurry so it really could be anytime he could fit her in. His work was the best and she had his details up in her shop and recommended him whenever she could to her customers. “Do you and Rick have any holiday plans at all now the kids are off school?” she asked him, having planned things with Ed and Al recently.
He gave a small nod, and then reached forward to pick up a napkin to wipe his mouth off with. "We'd discussed it. I think he's wanting to do something right before they go back. We've mostly been working the farm and everything. I've been thinking that it might be time to, you know, stop working in construction and just help him out full time." It wasn't as if the work was any easier, but Daryl did want to be able to help him out more.
“Of course, it must be hard to find time to take off and go away” Riza said, it wasn’t like they could close the farm like she could the shop if she needed to. “Really? That’s a lovely idea, if that’s what you’d like to be doing” and not because he felt he should.
Nodding, Daryl took another bite of his food. He chewed thoughtfully for a few moments, and again, washed his bite down with a sip of his drink. "It is. I mean, Rick's busy with the farm and all that. It's just hard to find time to sit down and eat together, you know?" He gave a small shake of his head and then let out a long breath. "It's somethin' I've been thinking about. I'm sure he'd like the help, but I could be wrong you know?" They had worked well together in the past, but things were different now. "I reckon we'll see what he thinks when I talk to him about it."
Riza nodded, she definitely got that. She struggled sometimes to get the boys to sit with her and her store wasn’t as busy as the farm must be. “I’m sure he’d love your help and if it also has the added bonus of meaning you get more time together then that can only be a good thing”
Giving a nod, Daryl smiled softly. "Yeah, I think that it'll be a good thing too." He sure would appreciate working closer to home, and being able to spend time with his lover was just an added bonus for sure. "So, either one of your boys going back to school soon?" He thought one of them was older and out of high school now, maybe, but he wasn't quite sure.
“Al will be going back but Ed is in college” Riza said, “He’s much better now his classes cater to his level of intelligence. I’m hoping it’ll help settle him down a little” Things had been tough to start with, it had taken Ed a while to get used to being cared about again.
Giving a nod, Daryl finished up his sandwich and then leaned back in his chair as he chewed. "That's good." He spoke only after swallowing, "I hope it does work in his favor. From what you've told me they're both smart kids, so I'm sure that they'll do great this year." He hoped the same for Carl, the boy was bright, and had a bright future ahead of him here. For that Daryl was thankful. "Carl will be going back soon. I'm glad he's got the chance to be a normal kid here unlike in mine and Rick's dreams."
“They are. That’s one thing I don’t have to worry about too much, I know they’re clever kids it’s just getting them to apply it in the correct way I sometimes struggle with” she smiled, “Carl’s a good kid too though right? He seems like he has a smart head on his shoulders. I have to admit I’m glad all our kids get a better chance to be a kid than they seem to in the dreams. Speaking of how are yours going?” she asked him.
With a chuckle, Daryl nodded. "I'm sure that you'll be able to point them in the right direction, Riza." She appeared to have it all together, and that she'd be able to get the boys where they needed to be. "He is a good kid, got a real good head on his shoulders." He was proud of Carl even if he wasn't his own. He'd seen the kid grow up in the dreams, and he wouldn't wish that life on the young man or any kid for that matter. "Same here." Daryl replied with a nod, "They're still going. Last one I had we were on our way to get medicine for the group since some of them have come down with some sort of flu that's killing them." His lips turned down at the corners into a frown, "But hopefully we'll be able to get everything sorted out. What about yours? How are they treating you?"
The faith Daryl had in her was reassuring and Riza was grateful for it, she did tend to doubt herself sometimes. But she always tried her best. “Oh I hope things turn out okay, I know they tend to be pretty hard on you and yours” she said, being part of a zombie apocalypse was pretty terrifying in Riza’s opinion. “Mine aren’t too bad, generally I’m just doing what I can to make sure the colonel doesn’t get into too much trouble. While keeping track of the others too” meaning Ed and Al of course.
"We'll be alright. I keep hoping that things will go on the upswing, and that maybe we'll get a little bit of a break." Daryl knew that thought process was in vain most likely, but he could hope that maybe things would get better for them. "I'm sure you keep all the boys in line." He replied with a small upward tilt of his lips. He figured that if anyone could do it, it was Riza.
“I think you aren’t the only one hoping for that” Riza said, at least if the net was anything to go by. There was always something on there about the dreams, mostly people frustrated or annoyed. “Oh I definitely do that. I have somewhat of a reputation for it, it seems”
He gave a small shake of his head, and leaned back in his chair after picking up his drink. "I doubt that I am either." There were a lot of people with messed up dreams on the network. Daryl couldn't remember the last time he'd seen anything good on there in regards to the dreams. It just sucked overall for all of them. A light smile tugged up one corner of Daryl's lips, "Somehow I don't doubt that one little bit." He gave a nod in her direction and then took a sip. Licking his lips, he sat the glass back down on the table. "So what exactly do you dream about?" He didn't think he'd ever really asked her about her dreams specifically before.
“I’m in the military. I’m the personal adjutant and bodyguard of Colonel Roy Mustang, I’m a sharpshooter and firearms specialist. So that part is similar to here, only I’m retired of course” she smiled, “Mustang is an alchemist, like Ed and there’s some kind of conspiracy going on involving alchemists and homunculus which we’re investigating”
Canting his head to the side, Daryl listened as Riza spoke about her dreams and what they entailed. He gave a small nod as she said she was retired here, and his brows furrowed slightly at the mention of a conspiracy. He didn't know what a homunculus was, but it didn't sound good. "What's a homunculus exactly?" He asked, taking another sip of his drink.
“Oh, artificially created creatures” Riza said, “In this case they seem to represent the seven deadly sins and are part of the conspiracy against alchemists” It was all very political and intricate.
Daryl's brows furrowed, and he gave a shake of his head. "Sounds complicated." He couldn't imagine having to deal with something like that. He had enough troubles dealing with the undead. "Hopefully ya'll will get it sorted out, and figure out who's behind it." Bad men liked to talk, and eventually that bad person would come forward.
“Yeah it is, I’m just glad my waking life is relatively simple in comparison” Riza smiled, “Thanks, I’m hoping so too. Things are heating up a little so we might be heading to some kind of resolution soon”
"Here's to hoping." Daryl replied with a small sideways tip of his head. "Doubt there'll be any kind in my dreams, but hey, you never know." For now the prison was just fine, and they were doing fine. Maybe it was because in his dreams he was jaded, but Daryl knew that things wouldn't last forever. Lifting his nearly empty glass in a toast he smiled, "Here's to hoping for quick resolutions."
