Constance was on her way back from a meeting with a supplier for the hotel when she decided she had time to pop into a local coffee shop and grab a coffee. She preferred tea but so far it had all been rather lacking here so she had begun experimenting with different coffee flavours until she found one she liked the most.
Standing in line she looked at the menu, hearing someone behind her she turned, “Please go ahead of me I could be here for days with this massive menu” she smiled.
When one burned as much energy as quickly as D’Artagnan did on a regular basis coffee was essential, sometimes several times a day..Today was no different. Some people were energized by the sun, he was by the coffee bean or cocoa depending who you asked. “Whatever you end up getting I suggest you ask for it ‘for here’. That girl on the corner is an impressive artist with foam and milk.” He motioned to the corner barista without much thought to it at first or even bothering to look up from his phone much. He really hadn’t been expecting anyone, but he shrugged. “Not in a hurry.” That voice was so damn familiar. Even her presence seemed to demand he look up. When he did, all he could do was stare as if h’d seen a ghost.
“Oh thanks for the tip I’ll be sure to do that” Constance said before she noticed how the guy was looking at her. “What? Do I have something in my teeth or something?” she said with an amused smile, “You can honestly go first if you want to” she added in case that was what he really wanted.
“Er...no, nothing like that.” He held up a hand in defense of his staring, he really hadn’t even realized he was staring until she pointed it out. “You just..look exactly like someone I know. Knew. It’s complicated?” He nodded mutely though after that and slipped up ahead to order a iced white mocha drink. Orange County was the least favorite spot to be when it was summer time, it was stupidly hot. Part of him wanted to go back and hide in the air conditioning of the house he shared with his husband, but the other was pretty fixated on Constance. What was he supposed to say? He wasn’t nearly as bold as Aramis was he? Aramis had ought right messaged him telling him of dreams and leaving D’Artagnan to wonder if he was of sound mind, he really didn’t want Constance to leave though if that was her. He waited for his drink near the corner as he tried to mull over things to say, normally he could find many, but this time words escaped him.
Constance grinned, “Oh really? Maybe I have a doppelganger somewhere, they reckon we all do don’t they?” she said before letting D’Artagnan order first. She placed her own order and waited for it, she was rather looking forward to seeing the clever design on top now she’d been told about it. “So have you lived here long? I’ve just moved as you can probably tell” her accent was fairly obviously not American after all.
“Something like that I guess.” It was a strange feeling seeing Constance there. Sure he’d met his friends from the dreams and it was similar, but this was the woman he’d married at one point-he was pretty damn sure of it anyway. Unless her dopleganger theory really was right. “Ah, yeah. Most of my life actually. You?” It was hard to form words as he was handed his coffee. Dream bleed over was a bitch at times. He loved Athos with all his heart, but Constance would also have a place there. “Your accent, where are you from?”
“UK” Constance said, “Well I was born in France but we moved when I was really young so I’m more of a Brit than anything else” she told him. “This is lovely though, I mean apart from the weather which is always going to be better than home the people also seem nice so far. I think I’m going to enjoy it here. So what do you do here? If you don’t mind me asking, tell me if I’m being too nosey, it happens a lot”
D’Artagnan raised an eyebrow at her. She was just as vocal as the Constance he remembered, it amused him. For once he did more listening than anything else, it had to be her. The tone, the accent, it was all too familiar to be coincidental. Besides that, Aramis had once told him there was no such thing as coincidence. “It’s complicated this place, keep an eye on it. I suppose right now I’m working toward being a P.I.” He wasn’t entirely sure how to do the P.I. thing yet, he was mostly just following Athos’s lead so far.
“Really? That must be exciting! Chasing down bad guys and helping damsels in distress. Or have I been watching too much telly and it’s nothing like that?” she grinned, “I’m a Hotel Manager, I’ll be managing a new hotel we’re opening up here, The Versailles, we’re hoping it’ll be successful. I mean it’s in a good location for it and there seems to be a lot of tourists”
“So far it’s a little slow. But we just started recently. It’s still an improvement to the paperwork I had at my last job. Only file it when necessary not as busy work.” He smirked at that, paperwork could honestly all just go burn in a fire. He would not be sad if it disappeared forever. “Hm...yeah, L.A. is full of tourists really, should have plenty of those with hollywood and long beach near by.” Both popular tourist spots with the boardwalk and movie stars, both attracted plenty of people.
“Well then I’ll hope for damsels and chases with no paperwork in your future” Constance said with a grin. She liked this man, he seemed sincere and sweet. And she could always use new friends in the area, a PI sounded like a cool friend to have as well. “Exactly, I can’t wait to explore the place more myself so I know the area to help guests”
“Well if you ever want a tour guide I’’m around.” He produced one of his shiny new P.I. cards to hand to her. “Same goes for hopefully not needing us on the investigation side-but if you do need one, we’re here.”
“Oh thank you, that’s really kind of you” Constance said taking his card with a smile, “I hope I’ll see you on a more casual level rather than professional” she added with a grin. She couldn’t imagine needing a PI but it never hurt to know people who had handy skills.
“Well yeah, like I said if you want that tour feel free to give me a ring.” Maybe Athos wouldn’t be happy with the idea of him guiding his dream wife around, but he hopped there was more trust there now. Not all dream things came to pass as he’d learned. He gave her a little wave as his name was called for his coffee. “Sorry I can’t stay longer, Impatient dog waiting for me at home probably eating something valuable out of spite.” He mused as he put in a few extras in his coffee, probably a pound more of sugar, cinnamon and milk-it might as well be a kids drink by then.
“Oh yes of course, thank you” Constance said, “Don’t let me keep you. I would hate to be responsible for your dog destroying anything” she grinned before giving him a wave goodbye as her own order was called a little after his. She was glad to have made a new friend, even if she didn’t know about any dream connection yet. That was going to be interesting.
