Despite having been told about the Magic Guild before Lily hadn’t had a chance to make her way to it yet. She didn’t think there would be anything useful in there that she could use when she had most of the stuff at her fingertips from her school dreams. But, she needed to check on a couple things before going through with this animagus spell and she wanted to see if there happened to be anything else to enhance her knowledge. It was a complicated spell and she wanted to make sure it didn’t go south because she didn’t want to injure herself.
With a couple of her own spellbooks underneath her arm she made her way to where the Guild was. She lifted her hand to knock, not entirely sure how to get inside, and waited to see if anyone would answer before she got on her phone to figure things out.
After his morning run, Magnus had decided to head over to the Guild to get a little practice in on a few defensive spells. After the recent demon attacks, Magnus had decided that he needed to begin practising his magic a little more for possible future attacks. In the dreams magic came so easily to him, considering he was over three hundred years old so he’d had quite a lot of practice, but in the waking world it had only been a few years that he’d had his magic. He needed to hone it.
Arriving at the Guild, he saw a redheaded woman standing outside, looking rather confused. “First time?” He asked, yellow cat eyes falling to the books in her arms, which more or less confirmed that she was also a magic user.
At the voice Lily turned around to see who was speaking to her and caught sight of those cat eyes. Well, that was not something you see every day. Her mouth formed an O-shape and then slowly smiled, “Oh yes! It is. I’ve heard about this place and need to find a bit more information on some spells that I can’t do on my own. And I really like your eyes.” They were utterly fascinating and she wondered how he came about them - if they were from the dreams.
Magnus smiled, “Thanks. They’re one of my warlock marks.” He was so used to his eyes being the way they were now that he often didn’t even think about glamouring them when he went out. If someone who was a non dreamer said anything they usually assumed they were contacts. The only times he really ever glamoured them anymore was when he had shoots or if he spoke to his parents via Skype. They still didn’t know about the whole warlock thing, but he had been contemplating telling them. “Shall we go in? See if we can help you with those spells.”
“Warlock marks...that’s interesting. We don’t have things like that for the witches and wizards in my Dreams,” well, you could consider the Dark Mark to be something, but Lily didn’t talk about Death Eaters. They weren’t worth her breath because she didn’t like them, though she was trying to push that aside when it came to Remus’ new love interest, “And thank you.” She followed along behind him, “I’m Lily, by the way.” She should probably introduce herself to the man who was bringing her into this strange place.
Magnus nodded as he let them into the Guild, “In my dreams, each warlock has one of two marks. It could be blue skin or horns and green skin. It could be anything really. Some will use glamours to hide them when they’re in public, if they live around Mundanes. In my case, it’s my eyes and a lack of a navel.” Magnus really only used a glamour as far as the no belly button thing went when he had a shirtless photoshoot. After all, it was easier to explain away his eyes than it was to why he didn’t have a belly button. “And it’s a pleasure to meet you, Lily. I’m Magnus Bane.”
“Huh….that’s quite interesting. In my dreams we all basically look just like normal people, non-magic folks are called Muggles, but we don’t really have anything that sets us apart. No need for glamouring if we can easily blend in with them,” Lily was thankful that they didn’t have anything like that because having to cover up oddly colored skin or horns would be tiresome, “And lovely to meet you, Magnus.”
“Muggle? I like that. We call those that aren’t part of the Shadow World, Mundanes.” Magnus enjoyed hearing about other magical types and their dream worlds. It fascinated him to find out how different they all were despite all using magic. “All warlocks, in my dream world, are part demon, which is where the term, demon marks, comes from.”
“Isn’t it amusing how every world is a little difference but there’s still some separation of non-magical people and the magical people. But the magic is different in a lot of aspects - do you use wands? There’s some people that do wandless magic, but it seems to take a lot of time to learn,” the part demon thing took Lily aback for a second and she paused briefly in her steps as her brow furrowed, “Demon? Wow, didn’t think that truly existed.”
In response to her question, Magnus lifted a hand, fingers flexing slightly as he hand blue sparks dance around his fingers. “Closest thing to a wand in my dream world are the steles the Shadowhunters use for their Runes.” It wasn’t exactly a magic wand, but it was similar, “I assume you use a wand?” He didn’t think she would have asked if she didn’t. “Demons exist in all different forms in my dreams. My father is a rather high ranking one.” In the dreams Magnus didn’t like talking about his father, but in the waking world he was a little more forthcoming.
The blue sparks were mesmerizing and she watched them with wide eyes and a smile. It was definitely cool and she wished she could do something with that. “We have runes as well, but they don’t really do much. And yes, I use a wand. And impressive father you have then,” Lily commented with a small laugh as she pulled her wand out of her bag and held it out to him. It wouldn’t do much for him since he didn’t have the same magic as she did, but it was still nice to hold a wand in your own hand.
“Dream me doesn’t think he’s quite so impressive. He’s actually Asmodeus, the Prince of Hell.” Magnus never would have voluntarily supplied that much information about his father in the dreams, but it wasn’t like his father in real life was really the Prince of Hell, so he had no reason to be ashamed or secretive or whatever it was that prevented him from wanting to talk about him. As Lily held the wand out to him, he reached out and took it, turning it over a few times as he examined it. He may not have been able to use it, but he could certainly feel the magic in it. “Now this is impressive. What’s it made of? Do you use specific wood in your dreams?”
“Prince of Hell?” Lily made a small whistling noise before smiling, “That is impressive. I should be pleased that I don’t have anything to deal with like that in terms of my father. They’re just normal non-magical people. And the wand is made of willow. Each wand is different and there’s a multitude of cores and woods that can be used. My was described as swishy and good for charms, which is pretty true. I like it - you don’t get good results if you use other wands.” That was always what amazed here when it came to Ollivander’s - every single wand was different and everyone matched a wand.
“Dream me hates acknowledging that he’s my father. Won’t talk about it unless it’s absolutely necessary and even then, it’s very grudgingly.” Not that anyone could blame him of course. It was because of who his father was in the dreams that his mother had killed herself and his step-father had tried to drown him while Magnus was a child until Magnus had wound up killing him instead. Things like that were very scaring for a child; even a warlock child. “How do you choose your wands? Are they family heirlooms or something along those lines?” He handed the wand back to Lily, not wanting to risk breaking it.
“Oh. Well, that’s a little disappointing to hear, I hope it’s not like that in this world. But I’m sorry you have to deal with that,” Lily hoped that people’s lives here were generally better than their lives in their dreams (if they were bad). If he told Lily that whole story she would probably be shocked and hurt for him, but completely understand why he didn’t acknowledge his own father. The wand was taken back from him and tucked away, “There are a few wand makers in different parts of the wizarding community. When we go to the wand shop the wand maker measures us and then tries to find one that would fit with us. The wand chooses the wizard.”
Magnus smiled and shook his head, “No, it’s definitely not like that in the waking world. Thank you for being concerned though.” He wondered what it would be like if warlocks in the Shadow World used wands and couldn’t help but find the mental image of Ragnar using a wand extremely amusing, “So you have a sort of wand choosing ceremony then? That sounds extremely interesting.”
“You’re welcome. And we don’t really have a ceremony? It’s usually the wand maker tries a few of them out on us and then one just fits and feels right,” Lily explained as they continued to walk, “But we don’t use it for everything. Doing potions and such typically doesn’t require a wand, but I carry it around anyway. But I just need some more resources to look at, so I appreciate you bringing me to them.”
“Now potions I know. At least, I assume they’re not that different from either world.” Magnus brewed potions quite often, usually for people who hired him, but he hadn’t brewed quite as many in the waking world, “And it was no problem at all. I’m happy to help and I enjoy hearing about the magical differences in the various dream worlds.” It really was rather fascinating to hear about.
“I think the general concept of potions is the same across the board,” Lily agreed with him. You threw things together, usually in a boiling pot, and out came magic. It was just like Chemistry in this world, so it would all be basically the same idea, “It is really quite interesting to hear about. Once I’m done with this bit of research I’ll have to find you and we can continue our chat.” They could probably talk for hours, so Lily wanted to make sure to get the reason she came here out of the way first.
A smile spread across Magnus’ lips and he nodded, “I’d love that. There’s a diner not too far from here, if you’re hungry then too.” Magic talk over coffee or food was always nice. “I’ll be over there practicing a few spells.” He gestured towards the area of the guild where there were various targets set up for practicing combative spells. He was looking forward to continuing their talk.
“That sounds perfect. Thanks for letting me in. I’ll come find you when I’m finished,” Lily promised with a happy smile. Who knew that she would find someone so fascinating the first time she came into the Guild. Hopefully these books would hold some answers and then she could watch Magnus use the targets. She gave him a little wave as she turned to the books and started to investigate.
