Sharon was pretty excited to be spending the evening with two of her favorite people in the whole world. She left Bucky and Viv at home and headed out to Veronica’s. The world was in order lately, so it seemed, and she was able to get out more. Thank God for Bucky. For Steve and Peggy. For Veronica and Logan. For her mother. Without her support structures in place, Sharon would have gone crazy. Viv’s father living across country was a lot harder than she’d first thought it would be. She’d felt like a single mom for a while. But now things were falling into place.
She was standing outside with a beer, staring blankly at the meat on the barbeque. It was an absolutely beautiful day, and Sharon and Logan’s place was pretty spectacular, too. Sharon was feeling incredibly relaxed as she lifted the beer for another gulp. Hell, she’d probably have three today. She had time before she had to go home and nurse the baby to sleep.
Veronica took a sip of her beer relaxing at her patio table. Backup sat at her feet tail wagging. She was ready for these steaks, ever since it had been brought up Veronica had been craving them. But while she waited she had some information to get out of Leon. “So,” she said to her male friend. “When do I get to meet this girlfriend?”
It really was a beautiful day out, and Leon was glad to be out there with Sharon and Veronica. He’d been worried when Sharon told him about her upcoming engagement that he’d soon have to stop hanging out with her, but he was glad that that didn’t seem to be the case. Like the others, he was sipping on a beer, and had been in the middle of a gulp when Veronica asked her question. He choked on the beer, and flashed an almost-panicked look Sharon’s way as coughed.
Oh, the panicked look was well deserved. Sharon’s head snapped over to the pair of them. Ever with an ear for gossip, Sharon picked up on the word girlfriend as soon as it came out of her best friend’s mouth. “Wait, what?” She asked, ignoring Leon’s coughing and spluttering. “Girlfriend? Since when?”
“Hell if I know,” Veronica replied to Sharon. “I have to get my information from Logan. This idiot,” she nodded at Leon. “Doesn’t tell me anything. I didn’t even know Backup is apparently a surfer.” Really Leon, sharing is caring.
“Uh. Not long,” Leon said once he managed to catch his breath. He immediately reached for his pack of cigarettes. He had the feeling that he might need them. “It was less than two weeks ago that we actually talked about it. I was uh… just waiting for the right moment to bring it up.” Which was apparently now. “Anyway, did you really need to know that your dog was a surfer dude?”
Well, Sharon couldn’t really get angry about it, could she? Two weeks was still really new. Maybe he just hadn’t had the time to talk to her about it. Though, she’d told him all about Bucky moving in and the rest of that story--he was one of the first people she’d told--but he hadn’t mentioned anything about a girlfriend. “Backup is a surfer?” She added, frowning. “I never would have guessed that. I guess he’s different from the dogs at the pound?”
Veronica wanted to meet this girlfriend mostly to see who Leon ended up with. But she had no interest in spending anymore time talking about her. She didn’t need to know every detail of Leon’s love life. “No,” but now that she knew she couldn’t get the image out of her mind. She probably would prefer not knowing that fact. “But that you can talk to animals? Yeah.”
Leon sighed, glad that Sharon didn’t seem too upset about the fact that he hadn’t mentioned anything. He realized that he probably should have told her as soon as it had happened, but he really wasn’t the kind of guy who immediately texted all his friends to tell them that he was dating someone. Besides, thinking of Revy as his girlfriend was bizarre. They’d decided they were exclusive, they were certainly involved, and he couldn’t really see his life without her in it anymore, but girlfriend didn’t really fit her.
Leon shrugged. “Dogs are as different as people are,” Leon said, shrugging. “Anyway, it’s not like I’m wandering around screaming off rooftops that I can talk to Fido. Logan doesn’t know yet.”
Sharon did feel a little upset she hadn’t been told about Leon’s girlfriend. It made her wonder if she had the wrong idea about their friendship. She felt comfortable telling Leon… well, pretty much everything. Just like with Veronica. But he didn’t tell her everything in return? She’d have to think about that later.
“Logan doesn’t know? How can Logan not know?” Sharon blurted out before she could stop herself. Then she amended, “I mean, don’t you come across police dogs and whatnot?”
Veronica just smirked. She was pretty proud of herself for finding out before Logan. Though she wouldn’t rub it in his face just yet. Not till Leon was ready for him to know he could talk to animals. Since apparently it was some big secret. Which really, Leon? This was Orange County. Land of strange powers.
“Yeah, Leon. How can Logan not know? What do you two even talk about anyway? How big some girls rack is?”
“Police dogs are actually well behaved. They don’t bother me when I’m at work,” Leon said. Of course, even if they did, Leon had gotten fairly good at ignoring animals when he was out in public. “If I need to question someone for an investigation, I make sure to do it when no one else is around.” He grinned at Veronica. “Oh yeah. Boobs all the time. Every now and then surfing and work.” Actually, boobs tended to not come up that often.
Sharon gave a little gigglesnort. Oh, boobs. What was it with guys and boobs? She seriously didn’t understand. Seeing as she used hers every day for… well, not sexy things, they were very much not sexual in nature for her anymore. At least, not at this moment. Maybe it’d come back later. Maybe not.
“Oh, to be a fly on the wall of that squad car.” Not that Leon and Logan used a squad car.
“What boring conversations,” but then Veronica didn’t care much about surfing or boobs. Case conversations could be interesting though but that was about it. She didn’t care all that much to know what Logan talked about when he wasn’t with her. “I don’t think I’d want to be trapped in any sort of car with those two.”
“We’ve never been kidnapped out of our car before,” Leon said, rolling his eyes. Maybe it was a low blow, but no one had been hurt in whole debacle. Not seriously, at least. Leon and Logan had both taken bumps on the heads, but that was the worst of it.
“I think the smell would be the most objectionable part,” Sharon teased, glancing over at Leon. “Being trapped in a small space with Logan and Leon?” She turned her attention back to Veronica, pulling a face like sniffing something particularly stinky. “Gross.”
“And you coming to ‘save’ us almost got us into more trouble,” Veronica replied. Really, the guys should know they could handle themselves. But then if it was them in trouble Veronica would probably do the same whether they needed her help or not. She smirked at Sharon’s comment. “Just imagine their stakeouts.”
Leon scowled at the ribbing he was taking. If there was anything Leon couldn’t take, it was a joke. “You guys are dicks. You know that, right?”
“Aww.” Sharon moved around the barbeque to wrap an arm around Leon. Okay, two arms. She hugged him tight before releasing him. “You know we only tease because we love you. And I think the Steaks are probably just about ready.”
Hugs were so not Veronica’s thing. And she was not about to apologize for her teasing. Leon should know her well enough by now. “Good,” Veronica replied remaining in her seat. “I’m starved.”
Oh no, a hug. He was used to Sharon's hugs though, and he returned it only a little awkwardly. “You and me both,” he said to Veronica. “Let’s get some grub.”
