Any day, someone could have a run in on the street that could alter the course of the day or even life sometimes. It was also a very common occurrence. People weaving in and out of one another on the sidewalk while trying to get to where they needed to be. Common and not thought was given to the situation in almost all cases. For Annie? Running into someone on the sidewalk on her way home to get ready for training with Finnick in a few hours? Nothing to think about beyond a hurried apology.
That had been a few hours ago. All things considered, this wasn’t her best day anyway. With her usual swimsuits in the wash, all she had was one that was more typical. Which meant the brands would be obvious but there wasn’t much Annie could do about that and it wasn’t as if Finnick didn’t know about her past. It was more just her own self consciousness about the matter.
Arriving at the pool, Annie pinched the bridge of her nose. She wasn’t feeling completely well, but so far it didn’t seem like it was something that would interfere with swimming. The whole point was to push through minor inconveniences anyway.
Getting back in the water had been great. Sure, Finnick spent most days in the ocean giving scuba lessons or taking people down for fun, but being in a pool and doing laps was so different from being bogged down with equipment in a wet suit. He was freer in the pool and the fact that Annie was the one with him at the pool only made it that much better.
As usual, Finnick was clad in his swimmer’s trunks; the right knee length sort that swimmers wore in the Olympics. He did have speedos, which is what he wore most times while competing in school, but he didn’t think Annie was ready to see him in quite so little.
Arriving at the pool, the first thing he noticed was that Annie wasn’t wearing the suits she normally did and he couldn’t help but let his eyes linger a bit on the newly exposed skin. It wasn’t like he’d never seen her neck or collarbones before, but this was just a little different. Finally pulling his gaze away and feeling a bit like a letch, he smiled at her as he got closer, “Hey, been waiting long?”
While Annie always made it a habit of always being aware of her surroundings so as not to be caught off guard, she actually hadn’t heard Finnick show up. Admittedly, she tended to be fairly aware of his presence and didn’t view it as a threat as well. So it could either be that, or she was definitely getting sick and more so than she had judged by the general feeling of not feeling well. Blinking, she looked over to Finnick, shaking her head some.
“No, not too long.”
At least she didn’t think she had been. Time was tricky like that when getting yourself and focused on the task ahead. So far her hair was down, which at least covered the brands on her back that would now be visible. But with Finnick there, Annie finished getting ready to get into the water, which meant putting on a swim cap and placing her things to the side before getting into the water.
Focus. She could get through this and then go home and sleep.
“Good. I’d hate to be that guy that keeps you waiting,” He smiled at her as he too put his things down near her's and prepared to get in the water. He had just started stretching his arms and shoulders when his gaze landed on her back, which was now visible with her cap on. He’s read the file she’d given him and knew what had happened to her, but seeing it made his heart stop and he couldn’t help but feel a little nauseous. Not at the sight, but at the thought that she’d endured something like that. If he ever, ever came across those guys, they’d be sorry.
Moving to the edge of the pool, he sat down on the edge, but didn't get in just yet, “Is that….did they do that to you?” He knew that Annie didn’t really like talking about what had happened, but he couldn’t help it. He cared about her too much not to ask.
Well, she supposed it made sense he would ask. Even knowing about what had happened, it had all been on screen, news reports, words. There was a difference between knowing and seeing, and so….. Which was why she rarely wore swimsuits that had a normal cut because those would lead to questions, or stares from people who didn’t know. Which also was awkward and uncomfortable.
In the water, hand on the edge, she instead just nodded.
“Yeah.” It wasn’t like there was much more to say. At the end of the day, it was a straightforward question with a straightforward answer. Still, she did start blinking rapidly. Seriously if she was going to possibly cry just because…. Going to wipe at her eyes as she looked down quickly in frustration, Annie could only stare in shock when it seemed to be blood on her fingers. That…. That wasn’t normal.
As Annie began blinking, Finnick also thought she might start crying until he saw the blood and he too stared in shock, “Annie…” Asking if she was alright seemed like a dumb question since there was blood coming out of her eyes so instead, he reached out for her, “Maybe you should get out of the pool.” His first thought was that the chlorine had irritated her eyes, but she hadn’t even put her head under, so he wasn’t sure what was going on. He just knew that he wanted to get her out of the water.
Well it wasn’t as if there was a proper reaction to have to someone randomly bleeding from the eyes. Annie certainly never had dealt with anything like that. And it definitely wasn’t the chlorine. There was a specific sensation that came from chlorine irritating the eyes, which this most certainly was not.
“Y… Yeah…”
Probably a good idea, especially as keeping herself floating was suddenly not a thing, the vague feeling of not feeling in great health being overcome with weakness. Taking the offered hand with one of her own, Annie placed the other on the poolside, struggling to push herself out of the water, only for her arm to give out, shaking.
If the whole tears of blood thing hadn’t worried him before, Annie’s sudden lack of strength worried him even more. Holding her hand, Finnick managed to adjust his own position until he could reach into the pool and place his other hand under her armpit and managed to pull her from the water. “What’s wrong? Do you feel dizzy?” Once she was out of the pool his first instinct was to feel her forehead; mostly because that seemed to be everyone’s first instinct when one wasn’t feeling well.
Well, Annie hadn’t been dizzy until she shook her head to try and say that it hadn’t been a moment of dizziness that had made her struggle to get out of the water. And she was definitely thankful for the help on getting out. “No. Just...weakness.” Whatever this was? It was definitely not good, that much Annie could tell, even though she had no idea what this was.
Finnick frowned as he watched Annie, unsure of what exactly he should do, “How’re you feeling now?” Sudden weakness wasn’t good in the slightest and coupled with blood coming out of one’s eyes, that really wasn’t good, “Maybe you should see a doctor?” It seemed like a good suggestion considering how quickly this appeared to come on.
“Still weak.” This was frustrating. Annie could be stubborn when it came to what she could and could not handle on her own. But feeling weak? It was just something that would always make her agitated and frustrated. But she also knew there wasn’t much she could do as she was still bleeding from the eyes and felt weak. “Yeah… that might be a good idea.” Even if she was stubborn that didn’t make her blind to the fact that she couldn’t deal with this on her own. Which meant doctor. “Sorry about this.”
“Don’t be sorry. Where’s your stuff?” While he didn’t think she should change, she could at least put something on over her bathing suit, because he figured she would probably feel more comfortable going to the hospital a little more covered up, “I’ll get it then I’ll take you to the hospital.” Unless something else happened; cause then he’d be calling 911.
Right. Don’t be sorry for something she couldn’t control. It was still frustrating but she was just going to have to deal with it. Because there was the issue of getting to the hospital. Though Finnick was definitely correct in assuming she’d be more comfortable at least covered up. So she just told him where she had left her stuff, thankful for the summer dress and shrug she’d been wearing that day as they were easy to get into.
Once Finnick located Annie’s things, he brought them over and helped her into them as much as she would allow him. He didn’t want to treat her like an invalid or anything, but if she needed his help, he did it. Once she was dressed, he too pulled on his own shirt then slid his arms under her knees and behind her back and lifted her up, “Next stop, the hospital.”
