It was a typical day at Mellarky when Peeta came home and started to get things ready for dinner for the evening. He was starting to knead the bread to make rolls when he felt something wet on his face and then suddenly small red drops splattered onto the countertop in front of him. A bewildered look formed on his face as he reached as he reached up to touch his face and his hands came away with blood. What the fuck? A surprised gasp escaped his lips as he moved to grab a towel and wipe up whatever was happening and he didn’t want it to get into the food.
As he moved to grab the towel a wave of dizziness came over him and he had to reach out to grab whatever was in front of him to steady himself. Why was he suddenly feeling like he couldn’t walk? He took a deep breath to steady himself as he grabbed the towel and tried to clean off his face and not feel like he was going to immediately fall to the floor.
When Caroline reached her apartment door after a long day at work, something smelled off. Like blood. Yes, Caroline definitely smelled blood. It was faint. Not a lot of it, but still she was worried about her boyfriend. The vampire rushed into the apartment finding Peeta looking faint at the kitchen counter, not only that but his eyes were bleeding.
Caroline gasped, vamp speeding to his side. “Oh my god,” Caroline said wrapping an arm around him in case he needed support. Of course being in such close proximity to the blood made her vampire face come out, and she didn’t have time to take a breath and get her blood lust under control. Not that she was going to bite her boyfriend, but she did help him over to the couch with her fangs out.
Her vampire speed was making his head spin a little bit as he held onto the counter a little tighter. One hand was holding the towel to his face trying to catch the blood before it fell to the floor. It had been a while since he had seen Caroline’s vampire face and he may have widened his eyes in response, but he was smart enough not to flinch away from her. As they went over to the couch he closed his eyes, trusting her to guide him there.
“I -- I don’t know what’s going on,” he really hated that out of everything it had to be blood. The one thing that his girlfriend needed to survive and he was covered in it right now. He just really wanted this to be over, “What kind of thing makes you bleed from your eyes? This has to be a dream thing.”
“You’re bleeding!” Caroline pointed out the obvious, her voice panicked just moments before Peeta said the same thing. “I don’t know! Since when do you have bleeding eyes in those fucked up games of yours?!”
Ugh, now was not the time to think about that. She needed to take care of Peeta. Which would be a lot easier if he didn’t smell so freaking delicious right now. But her fangs already being out did have a benefit, she bit into her wrist shoving it in front of Peeta’s mouth. “Drink!”
“I don’t. This can’t be from mine,” poisonous gas was one thing, blood rain was another, but actually bleeding from his eyes wasn’t something from Panem. It was probably one of those weird events that affected things amongst everyone else. Someone poor sap got stuck with this shit in their dreams.
He didn’t have to be told twice even though he really didn’t want to drink. He took her wrist and began to drink. He pulled his lips away to see if anything was changing like it usually did when she healed him, but then he felt something in his stomach, “Shit. Get me a bucket now.” He was going to vomit, he could sense it immediately.
Caroline frowned. Why wasn’t her blood working? A memory from the dreams came to her. Vampire blood didn’t cure cancer, it just made it worse. Oh god, had she made Peeta worse? Caroline rushed to grab a trash can for him. “Oh my god! I’m so sorry Peeta.”
Thank god for her vampire speed because the moment she set that trash can down Peeta rolled over and vomited all the blood back up. It probably included some of his own and he let out a groan of annoyance and pain. This was truly not something he enjoyed and he heaved a few more times before rolling back, “Fuck. What the hell is wrong?”
Caroline’s features were under control for the time being. That was until the smell of blood filled the air again. Ugh that all came out of Peeta? “I don’t know!” Caroline exclaimed practically in tears. “Fluids!” she said rushing over to the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water for him.
“You might have to buy some Gatorade if I keep this up,” Peeta knew from training that electrolytes were important and plain water wouldn’t fix his body after this. He groaned lightly as he tried to shift and make himself feel more comfortable, “It’s pure blood, Care. I don’t know what else to do. If your blood doesn’t fix it then who knows what’ll happen to me.”
Gatorade. She could do that. What she couldn’t do was lose Peeta. “Nothing is going to happen to you,” she practically snapped at him. Not like it was his fault but the thought of anything happening to him scared the hell of her. “Just rest,” she said taking moment to control her senses. Her face finally returning to normal. “I’ll go get your Gatorade soon, is there anything else you need?” she wiped some of the blood of his face with her hand. It was tempting to taste it, but she managed to keep her control.
“Some mouthwash and some baby wipes? I should clean my face off, but I don’t want to get up,” Peeta explained to her with a bit of a frown. He reached up to grab her hand and held it lightly, “I’m glad it’s me that’s sick and not you. I think this might just take some time and we have to ride it out.” This was not ideal at all, but at least he had Caroline to be there with him through it.
Caroline frowned. She would much rather it be her that was sick, but she supposed that was what being in love was like. “We’ll figure something out,” she mumbled. Worst case she’d call Regina again. She knew the evil queen had some healing potions, although she was pretty sure they were made with her blood which clearly wasn’t helping. But now wasn’t the time to think about all that.
“Will you be okay for a few minutes?” she hated to leave him, but she did need to get supplies to help take care of him.
“I think so. If I think I’m about to die I’ll make sure to dial your number and leave a nonsensical message that you can spend the rest of your life trying to make sense of,” Peeta countered with a faint smile. Even if he could barely move, was bleeding from his eyes, and vomiting even more blood he would still keep his sense of humor about him.
Not funny, Peeta. Caroline shot him a look. Now was not the time to joke about dying. In fact he needed to never joke about dying. It was times like this she wished her boyfriend was a vampire. At least then she wouldn’t have to worry about him dying, as much. “Very funny,” she replied clearly unamused. “I’ll be right back. Stay alive.” With that she sped out of the apartment.
