Rapunzel had let Laura know earlier that she hadn’t been feeling very well earlier in the day and had said she would keep her girlfriend updated if anything changed. She had gone out to run some errands and pick up some groceries because it didn’t seem like anything too important. Things had gone fine at the store, but when she got into the car to drive to the next stop she happened to glance up in the rearview mirror and noticed red coming from the corner of her eyes.
A hand reached up to touch it and she pulled it away with a confused look on her face. Fingers to nose, a small sniff, and she caught that tangy iron smell and wondered how in the world this could be blood. Why was blood coming from her eyes? A small panic started in the pit of her stomach as she grabbed a tissue to wipe it away and clean off her hand so she could send Laura a text. Once that was done she decided to skip any other stops and get home in case something else weird happened.
Weird was an understatement. Rapunzel wasn’t the only one feeling under the weather, but Laura had assumed it was probably just a cold going around. She didn’t believe in being alarmed until she had reason to be alarmed.
The second text from Rapunzel was near enough of a reason to be alarmed. She locked up and rushed down to her motorcycle, disobeying most traffic laws in her hurry to get down. Anything involving blood was an unwelcome surprise. It wasn’t until she was letting herself in that she realized she should have told Rapunzel to go to the doctor. “Rapunzel?”
Rapunzel was laying on the couch with a towel covering her face. She wasn’t sure what else to do because the bleeding just wouldn’t stop! As soon as she got home she felt incredibly weak and it took her some time to get from the car to the apartment and she had even left her food in her trunk. Pascal had come over to investigate her and she was waiting to see if Laura was going to come over or not. When she heard the door open she made a small noise, “I’m on the couch - there’s something wrong with my eyes. I don’t know what to do.” It wasn’t often that her voice sounded scared, but she had no idea what to do anymore.
Laura rushed over, sitting on the edge of the couch to get a good look at Rapunzel. The bleeding wasn’t as bad as she’d feared, but there was a strong smell to it that clogged her supercharged nose. As soon as she touched Rapunzel’s skin, she frowned. “You’re very warm. Have you been coughing? Thrown up?”
“I think I have a fever. No coughing, but my stomach feels really upset, so vomiting is probably close,” Rapunzel had no idea what was going on but this had come on so suddenly. She just wanted to curl up in a ball and be done with it, but she also had no idea if her own healing powers would work on her.
That would be bad. Laura didn’t want to see Rapunzel throwing up. It would probably take a lot of effort to keep her hair out of the way. Effort she’d expend, but she didn’t like that idea. “Logan says chicken soup works wonders, but I don’t know if you’d be able to keep it down.”
“Can you grab a bowl or something, just in case?” Rapunzel felt so weak that she didn’t think she could make it to the bathroom in time, so it would probably have to be into some kind of object, “And I don’t think I could eat anything right now. I’m just so glad you’re here. I don’t want to be alone for this.”
“Yes, okay.” Laura found a trash can in the bathroom and after putting a plastic bag in it she brought it back. Then she got behind Rapunzel and started to rub at her back. Gentle, firm circles to try to soothe her. She didn’t know what else to do.
Even if she wasn’t crying already with the blood she would have been crying from how badly her stomach hurt. It was soothing to have Laura there, but it wouldn’t take away whatever this sickness was. A hand reached up to grab Laura’s and squeezed it tightly before she had to let go to heave into the trash can.
Wincing, Laura moved Rapunzel’s hair out of the way and held it. She wondered if she could heal herself. They should have tried, like tested with a paper cut or something like that. She wished Josh Foley was around. But she didn’t know if his mutation let him heal sickness. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, not your fault. I got sick somehow, but I’m just thankful you’re here,” Rapunzel whimpered as she reached up to brush some hair out of her face. She took a moment to inspect what she just expelled and grimaced, “It’s blood….”
“Yes…” Laura wrinkled her nose, and rubbed Rapunzel’s back. She wasn’t sure what to do now, but she was worried about Rapunzel. “You’re very sick..”
“Just stay here with me,” a wave of exhaustion passed over her as she curled up a little more and wanted to stay as close to Laura as humanly possibly. She was giving her some strength to keep her wits about her, but she wanted to rest because her body was going through too much.
“If it get worse we’re going to the doctor,” Laura declared. She shifted herself until she could get Rapunzel’s head in her lap. “But I am not going to leave this apartment until you are better. Okay?” Laura was feeling too much again. It was alarming and she almost didn’t know how to deal with it healthily.
Laura had the right idea and it made complete sense. The doctor might not be able to do anything if it was dream related, but she didn’t want to end up dying from it. Rapunzel gave a nod and looked up at her girlfriend, “Okay. I think I need to nap.” Her eyes were growing heavy and she knew she should try to get some sleep in while she had a chance since her stomach was still flip-flopping.
Laura murmured something, trying to sound encouraging, and stroked at Rapunzel’s hair. That always helped her feel better. Golden and soft as silk, even now. She smiled down at her, content to keep watch.
