Tyler didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time with other werewolves in his dreams, but the time he’d spent with Jules meeting other werewolves and getting to know how everything worked was some of the most freeing time he’d had in either place. The advice and things he’d learned from the wolves who’d been turning for months or years longer than him had been invaluable. Tyler had been transforming longer than any other werewolf he knew on the Network - the two Dereks and Remus - but, well, with the different dream realities, Tyler was pretty sure he couldn’t offer advice for them. They all seemed completely different.
Including Derek, and the fact that he just transformed… well, whenever, from the sounds of it. It sounded frustrating. And dangerous. “So,” Tyler said, walking easily on the hiking trail they were on, “How does this partial transformation thing go?”
For Derek part of being a werewolf meant time outside. With nature. (Especially when he was changing). Exercise was also a big part of it. Helped to keep him calm. A hike with a fellow werewolf, even if he was a different type sounded like just what Derek needed. And so far he was enjoying himself.
“Basically,” Derek began easily keeping up the pace on the trail. “I started to change. Well first I was sick for half the day. Then when the time came I was hunched over for awhile. There was some vomiting” A lot of vomiting. “I started to sprout fur and my voice changed. Then just like that it was all over,” he shrugged downplaying what a big deal it was. How terrified he had been. “What are your full transformations like?”
Tyler frowned. As awful as they were, at least his transformations didn’t make him sick. Well, at least no sicker than the dry heaving that happened whenever he drank the Wolfsbane, but that was less to do with the transformation itself. “When I transform, it’s like every bone in my body breaks over and over again until they’re the wolf’s. The first time it took hours, but the whole thing’s over in less than an hour these days.”
That sounded beyond painful. But then his almost transition hadn’t exactly been pleasant either. He doubted it there was such a thing as a pleasant one. “Ouch,” Derek commented. “Sounds more like torture.” Because well it did. “But it got easier over time?” At least that was what he was gathering from it taking less time.
“It got shorter over time,” Tyler said. The shorter length didn’t mean that it was much easier, just that it was all the pain condensed into a shorter amount of time. Even if it wasn’t easier, it didn’t mean it wasn’t better though. “I haven’t heard of anyone who’s had a good time of it.”
“Yeah, I bet it’s a painful experience from any lore.” It was still strange to Derek that they were all different. But having a werewolf from a different world around was still better than having no werewolves around. “How many other werewolves do you know?”
“There are two others that I know of on the Network. Both of them are from different dream worlds too though, so it’s different.” He smirked. “Actually, one of them’s named Derek too. Popular werewolf name, I guess.”
Weird. All of it was weird. That they were all different. That there was another Derek. “Huh,” Derek commented as he processed all the information. Well mostly that there was another Derek werewolf. There had to be some sort of explanation out there. “How long have you been turning?” he asked instead.
“Since April,” Tyler said, frowning. Saying it out loud, Tyler realized he’d only been turning for less than a year, but it at this point it felt like a lifetime.
April didn’t seem like a long time but he supposed it was better than nothing. He noticed the frown as well. “That’s bad?”
“Well, no worse than the fact that I have to turn at all,” Tyler said. “It just feels like it’s been longer than it has. You know, time flies when you’re having fun, but stands still when you’re not. I can’t wait until I don’t have to do this every month anymore.”
The thing about most werewolf lore was that it happened on a full moon. Derek wasn’t sure how he felt about the fact that he didn’t change on the full moon. On the one hand it was a pain to constantly have to worry about when he was going to change, but on the other he wasn’t sure he would like being tied down to a certain day every month. Well, he probably would. Knowing would be better than the unexpected. However Tyler’s comment definitely caught his attention. “How will you not have to do it? I was under the impression once you started changing you didn’t have much of a choice in the matter.”
Tyler nodded. “Normally that’s the case. Once you turn, you’re stuck with it for life. But in my dreams, I’ve become a hybrid. A werewolf that was turned into a vampire. One of the perks of the gig is that I can control when and if I change. Which means no more werewolf transformations ever.” At least, that’s how he’d go about it if he had the choice. For all of Klaus’ faults, he couldn’t see the man asking him to turn for any reason.
“And I thought my dreams were confusing. First you tell me that vampires and werewolves hate each other but now you’re some sort of mix of the two?” How was that even possible? Derek had been studying genetics for years. While he knew that some animal species crossed like lions and tigers he didn’t think two supernatural species could. But then what was he thinking it was supernatural of course. Still his curiousity got the better of him. “How does that even work?”
“Don’t ask me,” Tyler said. “I’m just along for the ride.” Still, he might as well do his best to explain things, even if he still didn’t really grasp all the particulars. Caroline had always been good about keeping him in the loop in the dreams, at least recently, but that didn’t mean that he was privy to all the bullshit that happened in Mystic Falls. Not by a long shot. “In my dreams there’s this vampire named Klaus. He’s one of the original vampires, and I guess he was also a hybrid. A latent werewolf before he became a vampire. He used his blood to turn me into a hybrid and to bind me to him.”
That was just way too complicated for Derek. While, he was following what Tyler was saying it still didn’t make much sense to him. But then he was beginning to learn the dreams never made much sense. “Weird,” Derek finally commented. “In my dreams witches and warlocks don’t get along. If they can reproduce, and when they do the child is a bit… unstable.” It was the closest thing he could relate to.
Tyler’s dreams really could be fairly complicated at points. From what Caroline told him, from the sounds of it things really didn’t get any less confusing. If anything, they got more confusing. “Unstable how?” Tyler asked, taking a turn off the path they were on onto one that was hidden by bush. “The road starts to get a little trickier from here on out, by the way.”
Honestly Derek had no idea how. Children of witches and warlocks were pretty uncommon. Although if he had to guess Tori might just be one. Her mom was definitely a witch, as for her father as far as Derek knew he was human, but there was still something not quite right about her. Or maybe it was just because of how much Tori got on his nerves. “Never met one,” Derek said with a shrug. “Just things my dad taught us.”
Derek nodded as he continued up the path. “You really do this every month?” Not that Derek mind the hike, but still it probably got old.
“Your warlock dad?” Tyler asked. He thought he remembered Derek saying that. “What’s the difference between witches and warlocks anyway? I would have thought that warlocks would just be male witches.”
He nodded to Derek. “For the last few of them at least. It’s not too bad really. At the very least, I know there’s not much of a chance that anyone’s going to accidentally stumble across my cave and get their throat ripped out.”
“Adoptive dad, but yeah.” He was sure Tyler knew that. Warlocks couldn’t produce werewolves. He had a feeling it was the same in Tyler’s dream world but then apparently vampires and werewolves could mix. So really he had no idea. “But that’s basically it, witches are female and warlocks are male. They just don’t get along, always trying to prove they are better than the other.” He shrugged, he didn’t fully understand it himself.
“Yeah, no offense but I wouldn’t really want to hang out with a murderer.” Even if it wouldn’t technically be Tyler’s fault if he killed someone while werewolf.
“You dreams sound confusing,” Tyler said, frowning. “I guess all the different types of supernaturals keep to themselves, but I don’t think there’s any rules on who can knock up who. I mean, except for vampires, but they can’t have children at all.” Except for Caroline, apparently. He still had no idea what was going on with that, and he had the feeling it wouldn’t make much more sense when he got there.
“Me neither,” Tyler said. “I guess I don’t have much of a choice in my dreams. I think everyone’s killed someone at some point. But I definitely don’t make a point of it here.”
Made sense about the vampires since they were technically dead. At least Derek was pretty sure they were. “It’s interesting to learn about all the differences,” Derek commented. He wasn’t sure why they were there. It would be so much easier if they were all the same but still he liked to know these things. “Everyone in your dreams has killed someone?”
“I guess,” Tyler said. Honestly, he kind of wished that everyone had the same werewolf lore because it really got to be a bit of a headache after a while. “I’m pretty sure they have. Some people more than others,” he added darkly. “People seem to think that the best way to solve their problems is to murder their way out of it. Sometimes it’s justified. A lot of the time it isn’t.” Like the fact that they murdered his uncle.
“How pleasant,” Derek mumbled. “They just lock supernaturals up in group homes in mine. Try to convince us we are crazy,” he shrugged. The Lyle House was not a pleasant place, but it could be worse.
“I’m sorry, man,” he said picking his way across the final difficult stretch of the hike. “At least there were enough other supernaturals around that I didn’t think I knew I wasn’t going crazy when I first turned.” Even if Caroline had hidden from him exactly how many supernatural beings there were around. He turned to make sure that Derek could make his way across the narrow ridge. It was something of a steep fall down the cliffside, and he was ready to grab Derek if he stumbled.
“It’s fine,” another shrug. “At least my dad had warned us about it. Some don’t even know they are supernatural.” Like poor Chloe who had almost been convinced she was skitzophrenic. But that wasn’t his place to share and he was pretty sure that it had only happened in the dreams.
He followed Tyler across the ridge. It was narrow but he managed. Still hard for him to believe Tyler made this hike every month but you did what you had to.
“Shit. I can’t imagine,” Tyler said. He wasn’t sure what he would have thought after he killed Sarah if Mason and Caroline hadn’t helped explain things to him. The hot skin, the super strength. He probably would have thought that he was going insane. Hell, he had barely known what was happening even with the knowledge of werewolves that he’d had beforehand. A couple more feet, and they came to the mouth of the cave. “Well, this is it.” He gestured to the cave mouth.
Derek took a closer look at the cave. Yeah he wouldn’t want to be trapped inside like that. Wasn’t part of being a werewolf to run free? But then taking precautions to not hurt anyone took priority over comfort. “Seems safe enough,” Derek commented. “It’s too bad I won’t have much warning.” Not to mention he’d have a fever and vomiting to deal with. “But thanks, man. For showing me.”
“You never know. Maybe you’ll be able to predict it with time.” He hoped so at least, because the idea of a werewolf unpredictably running around was not a good one. “Maybe we can see about spelling the apartment too once you move in.” The ledge here was wide enough to sit on, and Tyler did that now, removing his pack of supplies and resting his back against the craggy cliff face. He handed Derek one of the water bottles he had packed. “Let’s eat some lunch, and then we can make our way back down.”
