Judy felt like her feet were dragging across the concrete as she made her way down the sidewalk. Work had been hard, her feet hurt, her head hurt but she'd done her job to the best of her ability. She was just tired. She'd not slept well the night before, and well, that was only because she was trying to catch up on her paperwork.
Coffee, however, would save the day for Judy. That and lots of sugar.
She was in plain clothes, a pair of skinny jeans, flats, and a white peasant top that she wasn't exactly sold on yet. Judy finally reached her destination, and she pulled open the door with a happy sigh. "Finally." She murmured, pushing her aviator sunglasses up on her head. "Sweet, sweet brew of the gods." She walked up to the counter, ordering herself a Mocha Latte with an extra shot of espresso.
Judy moved off to the side, arm bumping against another woman that was standing in line. "Sorry, sorry. I got a little excited about the prospect of actually getting my coffee."
Anna was standing by the counter where they passed over the completed drinks to the customers who’d ordered them. She’d ordered the biggest, slushiest, chocolatiest milkshakey drink they had, with extra whipped cream, extra caramel sauce, and extra chocolate syrup. It was probably enough caffeine and sugar to give a small child a heart attack. Anna wasn’t a small child, and her body was pretty used to excessive amounts of caffeine by now. She practically lived on Red Bull during the school year.
Anna broke into a smile at the blonde woman who nudged her. “No big! I’m pretty darn excited myself. I’ve been looking forward to this all day!”
"Good, I was worried that I might offend someone by bumping into them and well...that wouldn't be good." Judy didn't want to offend anyone, well not while she was out of uniform. She didn't really want to offend anyone while she was in her uniform, but sometimes it happened. "So, what did you get yourself?" She asked curiously, hands shoved down into her pockets as she waited on her coffee to be made.
“No, not at all!” Anna smiled over at the other woman, then held up the giant, to-go cup with the bubble top. There were swirls of whipped cream and chocolate and caramel. Anna couldn’t wait until she got to drink the amazingness in her cup. “I got a… I don’t even know what this is. It’s probably more milkshake than coffee, but the sugar and the caffeine will definitely come through. Probably something like eight hundred thousand calories, but eh. Totally worth it.” She grinned.
Judy's eyes went wide as she looked at the drink that Anna had ordered. "Holy moly!" That looked super delicious and Judy gave a nod. "Yeah, I don't think I'd care if it had that many calories either since it looks amazing." She returned the smile that Anna gave her when her name was called. Picking up her own drink, she looked down at it, a slightly disappointed look on her face. "Mine's just a Mocha Latte with an extra shot of espresso. Next time though…" She gave a small inclination of her head toward the drink Anna held in her hands, "I'm taking a note out of your book."
“Hey, mochas are my absolute favorite,” Anna said, grinning at the other woman with her drink. “When I don’t splurge on something like this, I go for a mocha like, every time. Though, I normally skip the extra espresso… maybe I should start doing more espresso. I drink a ton of Red Bulls, though. And Thai Iced tea, practically live on the stuff.” She beamed brightly. “I’m Anna.”
"Nice, they're mine too." Judy replied with a small nod of her head, content now that she had her coffee although she was still eying the concoction that the other woman had. "I think everyone should add an extra shot every now and again. It really does help when you need that extra pick me up." At least Judy thought so at any rate. "Oh I love Red Bull." Judy lived off those as well when she had to pull late nights at the precinct. "Nice to meet you, Anna. I'm Judy Hopps." She stuck out her free hand, giving Anna a warm smile.
“Hi, Judy!” Anna shook the other woman’s hand with enthusiasm. “I think we should start a Red Bull fan club! Because it’s just so delicious. You know, my roommate and ex-boyfriend dumped all my Red Bull down the sink once. It was so sad. I was pretty much crushed for like, ever. But I’m better now.” She grinned. “So, are you new in town? Or are you a native?”
Judy looked horrified at the fact that someone would dare pour out someone's Red Bull. "Hey, I'm up for it, but did they really do that? I mean, why would they do that to someone? That's just mean." Of course, Judy too ran off a lot of caffeine and sugar these days. "I'm glad you're better now, but dang, that's just too awful for me to comprehend." She shook her head, and then took a sip of her coffee. Oh yes, this was Heaven. "Not a native. I have lived in Southern California though all my life. I grew up in this small town called Holtville. It's close to the border." She offered Anna a smile, "And I've been here for about four years now. What about you?"
“I know, right?? It was super mean. And I just went out and bought more, so.” Anna shrugged, almost conspiratorially. Like now they had a shared, secret joke. But it wasn’t really a joke, and it wasn’t really secret.
“I’ve lived here my whole life! I was homeschooled and stayed with my parents most of my life, but then I started at UCI three years ago. Well, I’m starting my third year at the college, so two years ago?” Anna grinned brightly. “I’ve only got two years left!”
"That it was, and I don't blame you for going to buy more." Judy laughed softly, shaking her head with a smile still on her face. Honestly she would've done the same thing and kept them away from conspiring ex and roommate. Surely it wasn't that bad to enjoy something that you loved, and/or needed to function.
Judy knew that sometimes, okay a lot of the time, she needed things like that to help her function.
"Oh congrats! You've not got much longer to go then." Judy hadn't gone to a four year college, instead she'd gotten her Associates in Criminal Justice from one of the local community colleges before going to the academy. She'd been happy with her choice though, and she wouldn't have it any other way. "That's awesome. I went to our local community college, got my Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice before heading to Police Academy. Best decision of my life too." Judy loved her job, and wouldn't dream of doing anything else.
“Nope! I’m in the home stretch!” Anna was pretty excited about it, though she was also a little terrified. “Oh, that’s amazing! You know, I’ve always wondered how people get into the police department. Not that I think I could do it, but there’s something a little romantic about being a police officer. Upholding the law and all that.” She smiled warmly, then her phone started to buzz in her pocket. Anna jumped a little in surprise, and dug it out with her free hand. “Oh, I’ve got an appointment on campus in a bit. I should run. But it was really nice meeting you, Judy!”
Judy grinned wide, and gave a nod. "Anytime you want any more details on how one decides to enter the force, just let me know." Judy was always more than happy to talk about her own personal experience with the police department. "No worries," she had a few things that she had to get sorted out herself. Errands and all that. "It was nice meeting you too, Anna!" She gave the other girl a wave, and then headed out the door and into the opposite direction. Judy was still smiling as she walked down the sidewalk, happy to have met a new potential friend.
