Kurt walked into Baxter’s Bakery, and claimed one of the empty tables by the window. He was actually looking forward to meeting James and it wasn't only for the fact that there was a job opportunity. The other man was friendly and surprisingly easy to talk to. He was still a little nervous though. He always was when it came to meeting new people.
He was a little early but he didn't mind. He'd already spent the morning putting in more applications and resumes in his search to find a summer job. It wasn't a dire necessity that he get one right away, but he needed something to do. Kurt was the type of person who always had to be doing something, had to keep busy.
Even now while he was relaxing, he was starting on his newest side project. His nearly full sketchbook was open to a blank page as he brainstormed possible new wardrobe ideas. He loves this part almost as much as the actual act of making the clothes themselves. There was just something satisfying in creating something in your mind and translating it onto paper. Before he knew it, he was already halfway done with his newest idea and it was nearly the time that they agreed to meet.
James was more than excited to meet a new friend for a lot of reasons. When they talked, they had so much in common. Fashion, theater, art and the list would go on - and on. It was so rare that he met anyone that he could talk to without worrying about looking like a very lovable fanboy. He was that, but it wasn’t a bad thing.
He searched his closet for just the right thing for a set visit. He had been planning on introducing his friend around, making sure he found just the right people. However, he also wanted to make a good impression if his hair would cooperate, and he picked just the right outfit. Yes, he was nervous and his brain couldn’t quite decide between an array of purple, or blue. Decisions, decisions. He finally stepped out the door in purple, with yellow highlights making the entire ensemble brighter. Yes, that was a win.
Once in Baxter’s, he looked around for Kurt. He spotted him right away. He was cute. He had to force away a larger smile in favor of a more professional one. “Hi,” he said, coming up from the side. “You must be Kurt. I’m James. It’s nice to meet you, and I’m sorry that sounds so lame. I wanted a better introduction.”
In his eagerness to greet the man standing at the table, there was a rather loud thump as Kurt banged his knee whilst standing up. Wincing, he bit back all the curses that he had learned from the years at his father’s auto shop and held out a hand.
“It's nice to meet you in person. I swear I'm usually more graceful than this!” Kurt said with a laugh. “And that wasn't lame at all. You could have gone for a really cheesy pick up line or something. That would have been lame!” He added teasingly.
He had to admit, James was handsome. And quite a fashionable dresser. Kurt definitely approved of the purple ensemble. He himself had toned down just a bit with his own outfit, but still every piece was made by him. Well everything but the shoes. He wasn't a cobbler after all!
“Why don't I get us some drinks?” He suggested. “How do you take your coffee?”
James had to remind himself not to just be calm, and smile. The man next to him was about his age, and cute. He had this quirkiness that matched his own. Now to find his voice. “Oh, yes, coffee.” He smiled shyly. “A grande mocha with an extra espresso shot.” He definitely needed a kick start.
“Are you excited about seeing a set?” he asked. Today was the perfect day. They had a later call for an afternoon shoot. It wasn’t a heavy schedule, but it was enough. He had already decided that Kurt would be on board. Yes, he was needed, and a dinner could also happen, but he didn’t want to get too ahead of himself.
Kurt smiled and nodded before hurrying over to the counter. He ordered James’ drink as well as a non-fat mocha for himself. He had debated briefly over getting a muffin for them to share, but he wasn’t sure if James had eaten already. Deciding against it, he took the drinks back to the table only a few moments later and setting one of the cups in front of the other boy.
“I am,” He answered brightly. It was a new experience for him, one he was looking forward to. And if a new job and a new friend came along with it..those were two fantastic bonuses. “Have you been doing this job for a while?”
James took the coffee and settled into a rather stunning set of blue eyes. “I have been doing this for about 4 years now. I got my first job when one of the assistants to a director showed up in my hair studio when I was about a second year and loved her new cut and color. I went in and they had me do a few hairstyles on the spot like and updo, and then straighten, and mohawk. It was quite a test. I remember the young lady that got the mohawk saying that her hair would never move again because of all the mousse in it. It was just so thick.”
He took a drink, just to hide what he was sure was the most ridiculous grin. “I also do props, and makeup, and whatever is needed really. The shoots are usually 4 - 8 weeks, then some down time, and then there are new projects. Once you get in on a few, you’ll get asked back all the time.” He was already hoping that could happen.
“Are you excited? Have you ever done film work?”
“I haven't, but I'm looking forward to giving it a try.” Kurt said as his hands cupped around his coffee cup. “I used to do the costume design for my school's drama club but I'm not sure that counts.”
This was nice, being able to talk to someone about mutual interests. He was used to his friends eyes glazing over when he talked about fashion. To be fair though, he tended to get the same look when they talked about sports. “What do you usually do during the down time?”
“Just think of films as a grander scale, and if you don’t find something you need in wardrobe, there are shoppers that will go find it for you, or make it as needed. You will be shocked how much work goes into one outfit that is onscreen for five minutes. I do a lot of hair and makeup, and I’m the guy who stands just off set waiting to run out and do a spot touch-up.” James could talk about work all day, and he loved his job. It was always moving and changing, and always fascinating. Kurt would fit right in, especially on the new project, which would be another period piece.
He had to think about the man’s question. That was simple and complicated. He worked - a lot. “I do some personal designs, and I volunteer with the animal shelter.” Both of those were things he loved. “I hate sitting around, unless it’s binge watching a series.” He would love to do that with Kurt actually. It sounded wonderful.
It was easy to see that James was passionate about his work. His eyes seemed to light up and he was so animated when he started talking about it. And the job sounded just like something Kurt would enjoy. Even though it was small and nothing major, he had loved making the costumes for the school plays. It was satisfying and he was always so proud when it was complete.
“That's really sweet! I could never volunteer there only because I know I'd be bringing home a new pet every time I left!!” Kurt said with a laugh, grinning at his newfound friend. His smile grew wider at James comment about television.
“I do that to when I'm sitting down long enough,” he agreed. “Anything you're currently obsessed with?”
“That is the worst part, but they are really good about finding good homes for the little ones.” Animals were his second passion, and he gave what he could to them, trying not to get too attached. “I love the adoption events. I try to do those especially.”
What was he binging on now? Those were big questions. “I do still love America’s Next Top Model. A marathon was in order. I also love Orange is the New Black. Project Runway is nice, but there are some things that drive me a little crazy about some of those styles that are really way off the page. When I am designing, I like to create things that people will actually wear. Trendy, yes, but there is a limit.”
Kurt couldn’t help but smile as he listened to James. The man across from him was just so sweet. He was glad that they were finally getting a chance to meet face to face.
“I’ve actually never seen Orange is the New Black,” He admitted. It was one of the shows that had been in his list of things to watch, but had never gotten around to actually seeing it. “I know exactly what you mean about Runway! There were some outfits that won that had me wondering if the judges were completely blind.” He laughed. “ We definitely need to marathon and be judgey together!”
“That we do, and I already know we are going to do just fine.” Their tastes would be similar, even though fashion presented quite an array of styles. James was definitely ready for something new.
He finished his coffee and picked up both the empty cups. “Come on, you don’t want to be late on your first visit.” His smile said it wasn’t going to be the last.
