Wanda had arrived at the bakery earlier than she had arranged with Anna, she liked to be prompt after all. Sliding into a seat at a table, she waited for the other girl to arrive. She thought back on the past few days and training with Jean. She hoped that she was finally getting her powers under control and with some more tutelage she wouldn’t have to worry as they developed.
Anna was running a little late today. She didn’t even have an excuse, really, she had just lost track of time while she was folding and putting away laundry. She headed to the bakery to meet up with Wanda a few minutes late, and was slightly breathless when she came through the door and glanced around the place.
Wanda looked up at the sound of the bakery door opening and smiled as she saw the girl from the Net come in. Giving a little wave and a smile, she caught Anna’s attention. “Hey, you are Anna, yes?” she asked as the girl approached her table.
Anna turned when she caught another young woman’s eye. A bright smile crossed her features, and Anna headed straight for her. “Yes! I’m Anna. Are you Wanda?”
“The one and only,” Wanda smiled, gesturing to the seat opposite her. “Do you need a minute to catch your breath? Is everything ok?” she asked curiously.
“Oh! No, it’s okay.” Anna gave a little laugh, then shook her head. “I just lost track of time and I didn’t want you to sit and wait for me.” She slipped into the seat opposite her new friend and relaxed. “Did you already order?”
“Not yet, I wanted to wait for you,” Wanda told her. “I have not had frozen yoghurt before so I was waiting for your advice,” she smiled across the table.
“Oh, I don’t know! That’s a lot of pressure.” Anna said, giving her friend a grin. “All right, I like everything chocolate… so chocolate yogurt, chocolate syrup, chocolate sprinkles. That’s my plan.”
Wanda laughed at that. “Ok, well I like fruity things. Do you think they might have something like raspberry or strawberry?” she asked, feeling excited by her new friend’s enthusiasm.
“Oh, I’m sure! They’ve got banana with strawberry syrup. That’s what I’d go for. They might even have frozen blueberries! Have you ever had frozen blueberries?” Anna’s smile was bright, never faltering a bit while they talked.
“Uh, no, I do not think I ever have, I take it they are good then?” Wanda asked with a bright grin. “But everything you just said sounds amazing! Do you do this often then?” she asked curiously.
“If you’re going fruit, that’s totally the way to go.” Anna said, beaming. “Well, sometimes? I do like sweet things. I’ve totally got a sweet tooth.” She shrugged off her purse and whatever else, then climbed up from her seat. “We have to order at the register. I’ll be right back!” Then she was off, jogging over to the register to order and pay for their ice creams.
“Ok,” Wanda nodded, watching Anna bounce off towards the till. Rustling around in her bag, she fished out her purse expecting to go up to the till after Anna. She watched as Anna ordered, admiring how personable she seemed to be. Wanda didn’t mind meeting new people, but she didn’t find it as easy as Anna seemed to. When Anna came back over, she smiled and made to stand to make her order.
“Oh, sit!” Anna said, motioning for Wanda to sit back down. “I ordered for both of us.” She settled back down in her chair and put her phone and whatever else away, then folded her hands on the table. “I’m super excited to get back to school. It feels like forever since we’ve been on Summer break! You’re at UCI, too, right? I can’t remember your major for some reason.” She admitted the last part sheepishly.
“Oh, thank you very much, how much do I owe you? Or should I get the next round?” Wanda asked as she retook her seat and put her purse back in her bag. “It sounds like you are just as excited as I am! My brother thinks I spend too much time studying but I just enjoy it,” she shrugged. “I am studying neurology at UC:I. What about yourself?”
“Don’t worry about it!” Anna said, smiling brightly. She shook her head, the grin making its way all the way to her eyes. “You can just get it next time.” then she leaned back in her chair and gave her attention to her new friend. “Neurology! Holy cow! You must be brilliant.” She didn’t mean it sarcastically, Anna was full of awe for those people who had smarts like that. She shrugged her shoulders. “Art History and Journalism.”
“Thank you very much, I will,” Wanda smiled at her. “Well, I don’t know about that, but it requires lots of study and concentration. It takes a lot of my time,” she explained. “They sound like interesting subjects, do you want to be an art journalist when you finish at university? Sorry, college,” she corrected, she occasionally forgot herself when in conversation, her time in the UK having morphed her language somewhat.
“School takes up so much time!” Anna agreed, nodding enthusiastically. “I have no idea. I mean, I think I want to work in a museum or to maintain some old, rich people’s personal collection. Or maybe I can have a bunch of clients.” She grinned softly. “I dunno, there’s lots of options. I’d like to write about art, but I was told once I didn’t have much aptitude for writing.”
“Who told you that? Have you been to writing lessons?” Wanda suggested. “I could see you as a teacher. You have a very engaging personality. I would love to learn from someone like you,” she smiled.
“I took a writing class at college.” Anna said. “Aww, really? That’s so sweet of you to say! Maybe I could teach. I dunno. I’m sure I’ll find something eventually. There are so many things I’d love to do! The hardest part is narrowing it down!”
“But you are young, there is still plenty of time to experiment!” Wanda grinned as their orders arrived. “Excellent! Let’s enjoy!”
