Who: Stefan and Daryl
What: Truck Maintenance
When: August
Where: Rainbow Motors
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Daryl always tried to make sure that every 4,000 miles he went and got the oil changed in his truck and had general maintenance done. He was about three hundred miles overdue, and well, he had a little bit of free time today so it was definitely time to go get it done. He was out paying a few bills for the household, and for himself, when he spotted Rainbow Motors.
Glancing down at his odometer, Daryl pulled into the lot and shut his truck off. Wouldn't hurt to check and see if they had time to work him in for an oil change. The door made a squeaking sound as he opened it, and he got out, squinting against the bright sun.
Going inside, he gave a nod to the guy standing there. "Hey, I was wonderin' if you had time to work me in for an oil change, and general maintenance on my truck out there."
It’d been a relatively slow day, and there wasn’t anything big on the schedule. Stefan had just finished the tire rotation he’d been working on. He turned to watch the truck pull into the lot, and nodded a little. “Yeah, I think so. We’ve got some time before closing. What’d you have in mind? Just give her a look over?”
"Yeah, general point check up." He offered the guy a smile, "Mostly I'd just be happy with an oil change, and if you'd check the fluids that'd be good." He could do a lot of it on his own, but he didn't have all the tools that he needed at the house or the means to store the old oil. "I can check the tires, and brakes later. I'd normally do it on my own, but ain't got the means at the moment." He lifted a shoulder, leaning up against the counter while he waited on the guy to finish up what he was doing.
It’d be good to get this last customer taken care of quickly at the end of the day. Stefan didn’t want to turn someone away simply because it was late. And with his vamp speed he could do a tune-up in a number of minutes, rather than the hour plus that it might take one of his coworkers. Maybe that was one of the reasons that Dean liked having him around. “Yup, I can do that.” Stefan said. He grabbed a clipboard with some paperwork on it for the other man to fill out, then held it out. “Keys? I’ll get ‘er started while you fill out these.”
"Sure," Daryl handed over his keys to the guy, and took the paperwork from him with his other hand. His eyes scanned over the forms quickly, "Thanks again for this. Hate that I got here so late." Daryl knew how it was to want to leave work, and not have the means to do so cause you weren't finished up with something. Still, the guy was nice enough to work him in, so Daryl would give him a little something extra once the job was done. He began filling out the paperwork. It wasn't anything major, so it didn't take him that long to finish filling it out. Leaving it on the counter, Daryl pushed back and found himself a seat before picking up a magazine that was out of date by several months and began to leaf through it.
“Not a problem. Should only be a minute.” Stefan left the man in the lobby, then popped out to the truck in the lot. It started up and purred as it ran, and Stefan moved it into the garage, over one of the lifts. After that it was only a few minutes while he checked fluid levels, tightened nuts and bolts, dumped the old oil and replaced it with new. It was a good truck. Stefan wanted to make sure it stayed that way. If the other man looked through the window separating the office from the rest of the garage, he’d see a blur moving under his truck.
Stefan came back into the office, dusting his hands on a rag. “She’s a good truck,” he said, then dropped the cloth on his shoulder. “Air filter needs a change, and I’m afraid we’re out of that particular model. I should be getting some in tomorrow.”
As it was, Daryl didn't look up from his magazine, his eyes scanning over an article that he really didn't have much interest in other than something to do to pass the time. It wasn't long, however, before the guy was back and that in and of itself was enough to cause Daryl's brows to furrow.
That was strange, but whatever. He tossed the magazine back down, stood up and moved back to the desk. "That's alright." He gave a small nod, pulling his wallet out of his back pocket, "I'll come back tomorrow then if that works for you?" He raised a brow over at the other man, "What time would be good if that's okay?"
“Yeah, that’s totally fine.” Stefan moved to the register. The computer. He punched some things in and gave the other man--Daryl, his paperwork said--a total. The transaction was processed like normal, and then Stefan held back out the receipt and the other man’s card. “I’m expecting the delivery first thing in the morning, so you can come anytime after we open.”
"Alright," Daryl replied with a nod, reaching up to scratch the side of his face with his now free hand. Daryl knew that he likely wouldn't be able to make it right after the shop opened considering he had to be at work early himself. "It'll be later in the afternoon. I work construction, so it's early mornings for me, but I'll be happy to come by later if you'll hold one for me." Daryl took his card and receipt back from the other man.
“Absolutely. She’s safe to drive until then. Just don’t put your face up against the vents. I’m not sure the air coming out of them is particularly clean.” After they changed out the filter, though, it would be fine. Stefan finished typing things into the computer, then turned to walk the man to the door. “I guess we’ll see you tomorrow afternoon, then?”
Daryl chuckled with a shake of his head, "Don't gotta worry about that. I'll be riding with the windows down most likely." Not that that was any better considering the air quality, but it was what it was. He waited until he was shown to the door, and nodded. "Yup, I'll be back by. Thanks again." Lifting his hand into a wave, Daryl stepped outside and back into the heat. Making his way to his truck, he hopped in and started her up. Wouldn't be so bad to have someone else do some mechanic work for him to save his back and hands. A light smile graced his lips as he thought about what Rick might say, but in the end he figured that his partner would actually be happy that he was letting go a little.
