Classes were going to start up again soon, and Anna was checking in with one of her professors. She was looking into getting an internship, and one of her Art History professors was in discussions with her about getting a place at a local museum. Instead of meeting on campus with her teacher, he’d picked a cafe near the museum.
Anna was there after the meeting, finishing up her drink and going over the paperwork for the internship.
Vanessa had just finished a morning of readings and decided to pop into a local cafe for a coffee before walking home. Deciding to take a few minutes to people watch she looked around for a seat once she had her drink, “Do you mind if I sit here?” she asked a young girl with a smile.
“Oh! No.” Anna looked up and smiled. The place was packed! She’d had no idea this was such a busy cafe. It only took her a moment to organize her papers and move them out of the way. “Please! Take a seat.”
“Thank you, please don’t move your things. I won’t take up much room” Vanessa said with a smile, “It just seems to be a rush at the moment”
“Hey, it’s totally okay,” Anna said, shaking her head. “It’s crammed in here, and I shouldn’t be taking up so much space to begin with! I’ve just got to figure out about about this internship thing.” She said, motioning to the papers she was picking up.
“Oh where are you hoping to intern? If you don’t mind me asking” Vanessa said smiling at the sweet girl.
“The museum of modern art,” Anna replied with a smile. “Either that or the museum of natural history, because I hear they're the best places for interns in my major.”
“How wonderful, I imagine either of those would be incredible experience. You’re hoping to go into museum work?” she asked.
“My major is Art History. I think my future probably lies in curating a public museum or a private collection somewhere.” Anna explained. “So I need some practical experience with this kind of work. At least, to try and see if I like it.”
“How lovely, art can touch so many people in different ways. It's an honour to take care of such items” Vanessa said before taking a sip of her drink. When she put it down the movement caused a gust which knocked a paper from the table and she moved to retrieve it.
“That’s one of the reasons I love it so much!” Anna said, grinning brightly. She gave a little gasp, then reached down for the paper, too. “I’m so sorry! I’m surrounded by paperwork!” Her hand bumped into the other woman’s as they both reached for the same paper.
“Oh it’s fine, my fault really I...”she gasped when Anna’s hand touched hers, “Don’t believe him, when you see him again don’t listen to anything he says” Vanessa told her, looking at Anna intensely as she was hit with a vision.
Anna jumped a little. There was some kind of spark that ran between them, and then the other woman was speaking to her seriously, looking straight into her eyes. Anna swallowed. What? Believe who? It all sounded so strange. Anna wasn’t sure what to think. So she nodded, under the assumption that this woman was crazy.
“I won’t.” She said, trying to placate the other woman.
Vanessa finally blinked and gave the younger girl a sheepish smile, “I’m so sorry, please excuse me. I promise you I’m not completely insane” she apologised, her vision still lingering but she had more of a sense of herself now.
“No no,” Anna pulled her papers back into her stack and straightened them. Though, she did sort of think the other woman was crazy. “It’s okay. You don’t have to apologise for anything.”
“I should go, I am so sorry. I’m not often hit with a vision like that” she said, probably confusing the poor girl even more. Vanessa wasn’t often flustered but then she wasn’t often hit with that kind of premonition.
A vision, huh? Anna wondered if that meant… this woman may have been a Dreamer. She might be looking into the future. What had she said? Something about not listening to him? To who? She wanted to know what it was, what the woman meant. But she couldn’t ask. She couldn’t press for more details.
“It’s okay.” Anna repeated, her heart thundering. “Um… it was nice talking to you.”
“You too” Vanessa said as she stood turning to go but then turned back, “You are worth loving Anna, never think that you are not” she offered a small smile before leaving.
Anna watched the woman go, confused and bewildered. Had she told the woman her name?
