Presto smiled as he stepped into the waiting room, nodding to the secretary and taking his seat again. He had stepped out to go to the restroom, and now he smoothed his sports coat and shift down, feeling nervous as he waited for his interview. He was here for the internship, and somehow, he had hopes to get it.
He wondered who he was interviewing with. The elevator had seemed to take a long time to get to, well, whatever floor he was on, now. Man, he really was nervous. He loved computer engineering, and he loved working on them, and he had been idolizing Tony Stark’s tech wizardry since he was a kid. He had brought a rolling cart of a server and a computer, both in progress of being built, both new concepts and not based on anything out there. He wanted to show that he was worthy of getting a chance to work near the man who had showed so much brilliance in the tech world.

The elevator doors opened, and Tony Stark himself came wandering out of them. He moved over to the large desk in the middle of the lobby and checked in with the lady behind the desk. After a minute or so of flirting with her in low tones, she motioned toward the young man sitting across the way, under a window. Tony moved across the floor, hands in his pockets. He stopped a few feet in front of the boy and raised an eyebrow.
Tony didn’t often do the interviews for internships, but today he was in the mood. It was between big batches of applicants, so he could settle for one or two. He came downstairs to speak with the young man. Though, he didn’t say anything. Just observed.
***
Presto sat up when someone came out of the elevator, then stared when he spotted Tony Stark. No way. NO Freaking Way! Tony Stark was doing the interviews? Presto was so not ready for that. Oh man!
He flailed internally as he reviewed his notes and then looked up as Mister Stark stopped in front of him. He bolted to his feet and swallowed. “Ah, hello? I’m Presto. Can I help you, Mister Stark?”
One hand clenched onto the rolling cart, holding onto it and reminding himself that he had tangible evidence that he could do the job. He took a long breath, and closed his eyes, then opened them, and nodded.
***
“I hear you’re here for an interview.” Tony said, still with that sort of blank stare on his face. His mind flicked through all the interviews he’d done recently, all the kids he’d seen in these seats. While he’d always been kind to young people, taking them under his wing, he couldn’t help everyone. The company was set up in such a way that employees helped each other.
He raised an eyebrow at the cart. “Follow me.” He turned and moved through the lobby, assuming that the young man would follow. There was a conference room past the elevators, and the door opened automatically as Tony headed toward it.
***
“Yes sir, I am! You? Ah… I mean… yes sir.” he followed, staring, curious and unsure what was happening. But he followed, swallowing as he pulled the cart along, flicking a switch to start up the power from the generator to the computer.
“This is cool! Did you design this whole place yourself?” Because it seemed like a computer geek’s dream, and that was really a cool thing. After a beep, his computer came to life, humming very quietly as it booted up it’s systems.
***
Tony moved into the conference room and down the long table to the head. He took a seat in the chair and motioned for the young man to sit down wherever he liked.
“Along with some architects.” He was more of a computer person and less of a building enthusiast. He probably could have designed the whole place by himself, but he’d contracted that work out to other, trustworthy people. It made things go faster.
“I hear you have a presentation for me.”
***
Presto nodded, listening and settled to a chair facing the man, his cart near him. “It’s an amazing building.” He felt awed, but he was slowly adapting, excitement replacing awe and intimidation. When Mister Stark asked him that, though, he bounced up again. “Yes sir!”
He moved around to set the computer and generator on the table, and to put it where it could easily be seen. “So I was told you might have some internships here, and I’m Presto, a computer engineering student at UC: Irvine. I specialize in the maintenance of infrastructure while working and studying, but what i am really good at is inventing new things.”.
He flicked a switch and the computer hummed the rest of the way to life, as he leaned forward to push a tablet toward Mister Stark with the specs on it.
“My computer is running on a whole new infrastructure, from the ground up. Plastic parts, mostly, using a brand new plastic-making process with 18% less carbon mark on the environment than current standard methods. The memory and processor chips are all new designs, based in part on the theorizations of Arthur C. Clarke and physicist Gerald Fison.”
He gestured to how the case was open, showing the memory and processors, which looked circular, instead of square, on a motherboard that was red instead of the standard black or green.
“The memory chips can hold a lot more memory than standard ones, and the processor can handle nearly 10 times the current best speed and data retention of the top chips, and as it is made from a plasticine alloyed material, it will not overheat, ever. This and the redesign of the pathways on the board, eliminates the need for a fan for the motherboard, entirely. “ Presto attached a monitor, then a second one, then a third one, and all lit up, were found, and had the desktop appear, within seconds.
“I’m still working on final stages of getting everything to work together, and being able to handle peripherals, but the structure and maintenance are easy, and so far without fail.”
***
Tony watched the presentation with an eyebrow raised. This was all great and impressive stuff. He wondered for a moment how he could get his hands on it so he could take it apart and put it back together again. He’d just have to invite the kid up to his lab so they could work on things together.
Tony only had a couple of questions about the way the whole thing worked out. How did Presto deal with heat, could the parts all be 3D printed, was this the next step in green tech?
“We’ll have to discuss this more when you start your internship.”
***
Presto whooped, then calmed and grinned. “Yes, sir! Just let me know when i can start.” He would rearrange his entire schedule for this! The chance to work with Tony Stark? Yes!
He began to power things down and smiled. “If, ah, I do have the internship, I suppose I could store this here, somewhere, yeah? It’s got to be a lot more secure here, than in the house I am almost never in.” ANd Presto was a geek, and he had seen the look on Tony’s face. It was the look he imagined he had now, but less obvious, when he realized he would get to play with all the toys. Er, in a work way, of course.
Truth was, Presto was wealthy, exceptionally so, and smart, brilliantly so, and he could have come to Mister Stark as an equal in business. But he didn’t want to. He wanted to learn from a genius, to pay his dues and do his best.

“There’s a lab up on the fourteenth floor,” Tony said, climbing up out of his chair. He nodded for Presto to pack things up and to follow after him. “I can show you where it is, and introduce you to the woman you’ll need to see in HR. Get you all set up for things.”
He had things to get back to, and he was sure that the kid had a full plate, too. “I imagine you’ll start when the next batch of interns starts. Sometime soon. HR will have a schedule for you.”
Tony turned to head out of the conference room, letting Presto follow along behind him.

Presto followed the man, and nodded. This was awesome. “That sounds great. Thank you, Mister Stark. I look forward to it.” He felt like he could walk on air. This was going to be amazing!
As he followed, he just knew this was the start of a whole new life.
