Natasha had long ago gone from alarm, to anger, to resignation of their situation. Help wasn't coming, or had been put off by high winds through the canyons and valleys, or some other reason she couldn't discern. By the fourth day she knew help wasn't coming, but had held out for a fifth for Sansa's sake. At that point, they had to move. The search would have been called off.
Salvaging what she could from the crash site, and from the water and food they'd gathered while waiting, Natasha started leading them south.
The first challenge had always been how cold it got at night, and it got worse as they tried to escape the valley they'd crashed in. The winds picked up the higher they went, and eventually Tasha led them back down in search of another way.
She knew how to set traps. Traps that in another world had snared soldiers and people, but here were meant to catch food. Success was minimal. She made sure to taste anything they tried to eat first, before letting Sansa have any. Twice she was wracked by stomach cramps and convulsions, but pressed onward as soon as she felt she could stand, fueled by determination and willpower.
Often joking, Tasha strove to keep their minds off their predicament. She talked of their crash diet, and what sort of dresses it would help them fit into for Stark's gala. She taught Sansa how to throw a knife with deadly accuracy, and how to properly hold a gun, even if all they had was a flare gun with only two precious flares. Twice, they nearly drowned in a fast running stream, and once, they encountered a bear. It was more interested in berries than them, and Tasha quickly but calmly led them away from it.
Every time they camped, Tasha would tie a fluttering red cloth to a stick and position it to be visible from the air or a distance. A sharp contrasting color and movement that would stand out to anyone looking for them.
Three nights after they left the helicopter, Tasha came down with a fever. She didn't tell Sansa about it, or the infection in her leg, but by the next morning she had become delirious. It passed, eventually, but left her weak and exhausted. They didn't move for several days, until she was sure she wouldn't scare the hell out of Sansa like that again.
They found a pond, at the end of the second week. As long as they boiled the water they'd have plenty to drink. And hopefully they'd find food. A weary Tasha set about trying to make some sort of servicable shelter. What would Stark do, she wondered.
Stark would probably have a water powered Gilligan's Island type house built in four hours. Maybe she could do something like that. It couldn't hurt to try and she was tired of moving. It gave her a goal, and maybe it would give Sansa some hope of comfort, too.
