D’Artagnan was glad to have an excuse to get out of the house, he hadn’t in a while since they’d left the Agency. He had more time on his hands now to do various things that he wanted to do, so maybe now he’d be able to keep up with friends and such better. Assuming he could motivate himself to get out of his comfortable house. He found that was becoming an issue. He became rather content to just loaf around with Athos, but he knew time apart doing their own things was good too. Healthy even. So he waited for Anna out back by the pool, he texted her to tell her where he was and that the door was open when she got there. It wasn’t like they needed to worry much about intruders, both of them being past life musketeers and well trained authority figures. Not to mention Grim, who at least proved his worth by barking at the intruders even if in the end all he did was lick them to death.
The brunette sipped at ice tea on a lounge chair while he waited by their pool. It was warm without being over hot, so why waste it waiting inside? Their lazy dog was lying right underneath his foot serving as a rather decent foot stool and being useful. He had a pair of shades on, dark wash shorts and a black tank top but was still hot. He’d nearly drifted off in the quiet backyard. Cheek resting on his closed fist.
It was super hot. Anna was wearing a halter top swimsuit under her tank top and cut-off jean shorts, and she was still sweating. Her hair was up in a sloppy bun, off her neck, so that definitely helped. When she arrived, she let herself through the house and to the backyard. “D’Art?” She called out, glancing quickly around. She’d forgotten how nice his house was. Spacious and clean, and she loved the pool in the backyard. Anna was considering getting one of her own, actually. “There you are! Are you ready to go buy Athos the best birthday present ever?”
At the sound of a familiar voice he lowered a pair of sunglasses and peered behind him at Anna with a nod. “I thought it’d be better out here..but it’s not.” He already had slightly darker skin though so he didn’t have to worry about things like sunburns as much as others might have on that hot day. He stretched out a bit, and Grim whined at having lost the warm contact from his human. “Maybe..I hope so. He’s kind of hard to read that way. Haha.” D’Atagnan admitted with a shrug. “He says he likes everything, but there’s sort of Athos degrees of like.” He had to read though the lines when it came to buying Athos things. “Might be easier with two people though to find it.” That was his theory anyway.
“It’s super hot,” Anna agreed, nodding. She pulled her sunglasses back down over her eyes to ward off the bright sun, and smiled brightly at D’Art and the dog. “Well, I’m sure it’s also one of those thought that counts things, too. He’s going to love it because we picked it out special for him, right?” She bent down to scratch the dog behind the ears. “A nice drinking wine, right? I think that’s our best bet.” ...not that Anna was legal to buy a bottle of wine. Not until November.
“I hope so.” he nodded, giving her a little smile t the sentiment. “I think so anyway. I feel bad though, I pretty much want everything and anything so I make it easy.” He shrugged, Maybe he ought to be a little more tight lipped and make it a game of some kind sometime, He liked the faces Athos made in response when he did those kinds of things. Grim leaned into the touch like a giant puppy and D’Artagnan rolled his eyes. “Still the most spoiled thing on the face of the planet is him.” He pointed at his dog, but obviously still loved the mutt. Bratty as he was. “I think so. Something I don’t wanna make him share.” He grinned. Athos would have to be a little greedy for once. “ Maybe chocolate too. Something that pairs.”
Anna laughed. “I know what you mean! I’m happy with anything. I just love presents.” She grinned a playful and sheepish grin. She was unapologetic about her optimism and enthusiasm, even if she was a little embarrassed about it. “Oh, I don’t blame you for spoiling him. I mean, if I had a dog, I’d do the same thing.” She grinned, petting the dog. “Oh man! Yes! Chocolate! That sounds like the best ever. Maybe cheese, too? Some really expensive stuff that pairs with the others? Or not. I don’t know these things.”
D’Artagnan rubbed a hand through his dark hair in slight frustration over that. “Maybe I should make it harder…”He thought out loud, but why? Athos knew him well. “Yeah I pretty much don’t care either just the fact that someone bothered is nice.”Funny thing is, I’m not the one spoiling him. That’s mostly Athos. He looks at me and sits, he see’s Athos and wants a treat.” D’Artagnan shook his head in amusement. “In the dreams, it’s the opposite. Athos is sorta hard to approach at times. Pretty much the face of discipline. Here...apparently that’s me.” He lead Anna toward the car to get on their way.
Anna laughed. She couldn’t really imagine either of them as being the face of discipline. She moved with him to the car, giving a little skip in her step to catch up with him. “I don’t know if I could do it! I have a lot of respect for people who can discipline animals like that. I know it’s good for them, but they’re just so cute!” Not that Anna could have an animal right now. She wouldn’t want to tempt Stefan so much. What if he lost control or something? It was just too dangerous. She climbed into D’Art’s car so he could drive them to the shop. “I love visiting friends who have animals so I can enjoy them.”
“It’s cute until it eats your favorite headphones. Then it’s not so cute.” The car Anna got into was actually the same car her sister had bought him quite a while back after her snow storm caused him to drive his own off a ditch. After attaching an ipod and playlist mostly of random Industrial Techno he waited for her to get in before turning the key. “Well you know you can come by whenever, just text or call us first.”
Anna gave a little chuckle. “Well, of course they want to eat your headphones. Headphones are delicious.” She teased, winked at him, then slipped into the car. “You’re so sweet. I will! I’ll take you up on that offer.” She pulled on her seatbelt and settled in her seat, thinking about how much she enjoyed visiting with D’Artagnan. He was like an older brother figure for Anna, something that she never knew she wanted until she found one. “And for use of the pool, too. We’ll have to schedule more swimming classes!”
He made a face at that. “Yeah, all that tasty earwax?” And cringed even as he said it before turning the key. Anna had actually been the first friend he made in Orange County, so whenever she got time to come visit he was glad for it. “I’m sure Athos will be glad to finally have a willing student.” D’Artagnan rolled his eyes at the idea of swim classes, ironic that. He lived surrounded by water but hadn’t figured out how to swim. So far he could only sink. He could still enjoy the pool, he just lurked around in the shallow end.
Anna laughed softly. “Yup.” She grinned over at him. Dogs were weird creatures, but they were pleasant. She wished she could have one. “We’ll schedule it for after the birthday party. Don’t want to make him work right before his special day!” It was super exciting to be shopping with D’Art. She leaned back in the chair and breathed in deep, relaxing in the summer sunshine.
