Percy had been trying to tell himself, for months, that he and Annabeth were just friends and the reason he wanted to hang out with her more was because of the dreams, but after the conversation he’d had on the net, he wasn’t so sure even he believed that anymore. Even before the dreams, he’d wanted to hang out with Annabeth as often as possible; usually making up excuses like getting together to study or have lunch or something else like that, but now he was starting to think that he might just actually have a crush on her. Was it still a crush if you were over eighteen? Whatever it was, Percy was sure that that’s what was going on. Of course he had no idea if Annabeth felt anything for him besides friendship, after all, Thalia had said Annabeth had called him just a friend to her, but since he’d said the same thing about Annabeth, what was he supposed to believe?
After asking for ideas for things he and Annabeth could do, he’d decided on hiking and sent Annabeth a text. Luckily, she’d thought that was a good idea so they’d set a date to do it. Not wanting to go any place too strenuous, Percy had decided on the hiking path in the Hollywood Hills and on the day they had decided had gone to pick up Annabeth then headed towards the hills.
---
Annabeth didn’t want to admit just how much she was looking forward to spending the day hiking with Percy. She had been thrilled to get his text message. The more she had dreamed about him, the more she wanted to spend time with this Percy. The poor girl was still in denial about how she felt about him. Deep down, if she had really sat down and thought about it, she knew that she would have to face the reality of her feelings for him. Part of her wanted to make sure that she was feeling this way because she wanted to, and not because of her dreams.
Whatever those feelings were.
Spending a day hiking with Percy seemed like a great way to sort through all of the feelings she was dealing with. She had gotten ready a little too early, and was already sitting outside waiting for him when he came to pick her up. When she saw him she gave a little wave and stood up to walk over towards him.
“Hi! Are you ready to do this?”
---
Percy couldn’t help but smile as he saw Annabeth approach the car and pressed the button to unlock the passenger door so she could get in, “Hey. Yeah, I’m ready. Are you?” Percy hadn’t gone hiking or even for a long walk in awhile, so he was fully expecting to get winded easily if they encountered any steeper hills. He could only hope that some of that demi god stamina had bled over like his apparent water abilities, “I brought water for us.” He said, indicating the two water bottles in the center console of the car.
---
“I’ve been wanting to get out there and do some hiking before school started,” she said as she slid into the passenger seat of his car. “I haven’t been since the beginning of my freshman year, I didn’t find a lot of time to get out while I was in school. Studying took up a lot of my time.” She turned in her seat to look at him. “I’m glad you suggested it.” Annabeth smiled at him before turning to put her seatbelt on. “Water was a smart idea. It’s going to be hot out there.” Settling into her seat, she placed her hands into her lap. She was doing her best to not be nervous.
“Are you ready for school to start again?”
---
“Not particularly,” Percy said as he pulled away from the curb and headed in the direction of the Hollywood Hills. Percy’s dyslexia and ADD had always made school difficult and while he now knew that one reason he had both was because he was a Demi God, it still didn’t make it any easier. He still had to work twice as hard as everyone else. “I wish summer was longer. It’s not fair that it goes by so fast.” Sure they had a longer summer than high schoolers, but not by much. “Are you looking forward to going back?”
---
It didn’t surprise her too much that Percy wasn’t excited. Most people really weren’t excited about going back to school. Annabeth also knew that dream Percy had a tough time, and she wondered if that bled into this life, too. She had studied enough with him by this point to know his habits. “It does seem to fly by. One minute you’re finishing finals and starting vacation and the next second you’re at the store getting yourself new school supplies to start the year again.” Annabeth loved it, though. “I have to admit I love school shopping, though. I get new pens!” And that was really exciting. “I am looking forward to going back. It means I’m one step closer to what I want to do with my life.”
---
“You’re probably the only person I know who is excited about buying pens.” Percy glanced over at Annabeth as they reached a red light, smirking. The only pen Percy was at all excited about was Riptide. It was strange, he’d been weirded out at first, when the sword had shown up, but now it was like he’d always had it. It was a part of him now. “I mean, if you’re this excited about pens, what happens when it comes to binders and loose leaf paper?”
---
“Pens are serious, Percy,” she said with the straightest face she could muster. She couldn’t help the giggle that bubbled up, though. Pens weren’t that serious, but it was really exciting to get new pens. They just wrote better, and with the way Annabeth wrote notes, she was always needing new pens. “Maybe you’ll just have to come back to school shopping with me to find out,” she said with a smirk. “I can make sure you get the really good deals.” She had no idea why she was babbling about school supplies to him, but she figured it had more to do with nerves than anything else. Not that she didn’t actually love school supplies, though.
---
Percy pulled into a parking space once they reached the Hollywood hills and he turned to quirk a brow at Annabeth, “You wanna take me back to school shopping?” His lips turned up into a smirk as he watched her. She might have been babbling, but Percy realized that he thought it was cute. He hadn’t been expecting that, but it was true and he felt his cheeks flush slightly.
---
Unbuckling her seatbelt, she turned to him and nodded. “Why not? I’m really good at it, and I know all of the best pens to get. I would hate for you to have bad pens, Percy,” she said with a smile. Part of her knew that she was suggesting this in order to spend more time with him. Not that she needed an excuse, but she didn’t want to seem like she was too eager. Annabeth grabbed the water Percy had brought for her, opened the door and then stepped out of the vehicle. “We can even get lunch.” She hoped that would help convince him to go.
---
Percy sighed and grabbed his own bottle of water, “Alright. You can buy me pens. Do you know the best looseleaf paper too?” He teased as he got out of the car. It definitely wouldn’t be a conventional outing, but Percy wouldn’t say no to the chance to hang out with Annabeth more. Yeah, it was probably safe to say that he thought of her as more than just a friend. “I won’t say no to lunch. I won’t say no to almost any food actually.” It was a wonder that Percy wasn’t two hundred pounds, the way he ate sometimes.
---
“What sort of back to school shopper would I be if I didn’t know that, Percy?” She shook her head and tried to act like she was majorly offended. Annabeth smiled at him then and moved to walk next to him. “I’d never let you down.” For a moment, she almost called him by his dream nickname, and she idly wondered if something like that would bother him. She leaned over and bumped his shoulder with hers. “I figured food would be the best way to get you into school shopping.” Wasn’t food the answer for most things? She glanced across the parking lot to the base of the trail. “Bet I can beat you to the start of the trail,” she said with a smirk. She almost started running before him just to ensure she could win.
---
“Not a very good one, obviously,” Percy smirked and bumped Annabeth’s shoulder back. He hadn’t really give much thought to how he’d react if she called him Seaweed Brain, but it would likely be the same as in the dreams. “Food is probably a good way to get me to do most things.” Pressing the button to lock the car, he slipped the keys into his pocket and quirked a brow at her, “Oh, you think so?” She likely would beat him, but Percy could pretend that he thought he could beat her. “We’ll see about that.”
---
Annabeth laughed and just shook her head. Was this a typical conversation? She wasn’t sure how many college students joked about back to school stuff. Not that she was actually joking. She really did love back to school shopping. She looked at him out of the corner of her eye and smirked. “I’ll have to remember that for later. Just in case I need you to do something.” It was definitely information that she was going to put to good use when she needed it. Standing next to him she crossed her arms and tilted her head. “Are you ready?”
---
“Only if you’re ready to eat my dust.” Percy smirked as he got ready next to Annabeth. “On three.” He counted down then took off towards the start of the trail. He didn’t expect that he’d win and he was alright with that, because just getting to spend time with Annabeth was enough.
