The beach was Sirius's second home. Here he didn't feel cold, here he didn't feel devoid of happiness, or as if he was worthless. Out here on the water, or sitting in the sand, Sirius felt okay. He felt warm, hope in his life with Lily and he felt as if he were worth something.
Sirius was straddling his board out on the water, looking toward the horizon. It wasn't near any special time of day, he was just merely enjoying the view and the hot sun against his skin. He paddled back to shore since the waves had died down and instead of going to his car and heading home he plopped down on the sand, still just basking in the day with his board beside him.
His thoughts were of a place he'd only seen in his dreams, and he wondered, if not for the first time, how long he'd be stuck in Azkaban. Sirius didn't have the answers, he doubted that he would until his dreams revealed otherwise.
Finnick was walking the beach, looking for seashells. He didn’t have anything particular in mind that he was going to do with them, but he wanted to make something for Annie and she liked seashells and pretty much all things to do with the ocean and water, so he’d decided to see if he could find some decent enough looking seashells. He had a couple in his pocket and was currently walking barefoot along the shore when he noticed the guy sitting in the sand. He had only surfed a few times and while it had been fun, he preferred swimming and scuba diving.
“Been surfing long?” He asked as he got closer to the guy and gestured towards the surfboard beside him.
Sirius was jerked from his dark thoughts by a voice, and he glanced up. He squinted his eyes against the brightness of the sun, and offered the other man a smile. "Been surfing since I was 13." His uncle had been the one to teach him, and he was happy that he had those memories of him. "So yeah, I've got a few years in." He chuckled softly, and then reached up to run his fingers through his still damp hair. "Do you happen to surf?"
“That’s cool.” Finnick stuffed his hands into the pockets of his hoodie where the shells were that he’d picked up so far, “I’ve surfed before, but I prefer swimming and scuba diving.” Finnick preferred being in control when it came to the water and even the best surfer didn’t always have control over a surfboard.
Sirius gave a small nod, "Been scuba diving before, haven't done it in awhile." Honestly he couldn't remember the last time he'd gone scuba diving. He thought for a few moments, it'd been maybe three years? The last time he'd gone had been with a few surf buddies of his, and they'd had a grand time, but he just hadn't done it since. "That's cool though. I do enjoy swimming too, and the water right now is just perfect for it."
“Well, I do lessons and outings, if you’re ever interested in doing it again,” Finnick pulled out his wallet and took out a business card before handing it over, “I own my own dive shop.” The summer had been a good time for the shop, with quite a lot of people making appointments to go scuba diving.
Reaching up, Sirius took the card from Finnick and looked at it with interest. "Very cool. I'd offer you one of my cards, but I didn't bring my wallet down here with me." It was left tucked away in his car as a matter of fact, "But I suspect you'll be seeing me soon. I wouldn't mind going out again." Maybe he could talk Lily into going with him, that could be a fun date for the two of them. "How long have you owned your shop?" He asked, looking up at Finnick curiously.
“Give us a call whenever and we can set something up for you.” Talking about the dive shop reminded Finnick that he still had to get Annie out for a dive sometime. He was also curious to see how Peeta and Johanna would do during a dive. “It’s been a couple years now. About three or four.” He’d started the shop not too long after he’d graduated college.
"Thanks man." Sirius replied with a small nod of his head, making a mental note to give his place a call very soon. He'd seriously talk to Lily about it once he was back home. "Very nice, I've been giving surf lessons for about two years now." Merlin, it was hard to believe that his Uncle had been gone for that long now, but he'd left him with enough money to get by and a house. Sirius, however, would've rather had his uncle there than material things.
“How did you get into surfing?” Finnick asked, deciding to sit down in the sand near Sirius; it was more comfortable than looking down at him as they talked. “And did you have to do anything in particular to start giving lessons?” He assumed he needed to get some sort of license like Finnick had in order to give scuba lessons.
"My uncle." Sirius replied with a smile, "He was the one that taught me how to surf, and it was really the only time that I got to spend with him." Bless his mother, the only good thing she'd ever really done for him was tell him that he couldn't spend time with his uncle. "I did. I'm a Level 2 Surf Coach from ASI and I have CPR training." That was also thanks in part to the lifeguarding he did during the off months, but he would've had it regardless.
“That’s funny; I got into diving cause of my uncle too.” During high school, Finnick had worked at his uncle’s dive shop back home in Florida. It was one of the reasons he’d decided to open his own dive shop instead of becoming a marine biologist like he’d been planning. “Good thing for uncles, huh?”
Sirius's brows shot up, "Oh really?" The corners of his lips tipped up into a smile, and then he gave a small nod. "Definitely. Mine taught me a lot about...well everything." His uncle had been one of the most steady and solid things in Sirius's life. Well, until he'd moved in with the Potter's. They'd also been his saving grace during his high school years, and Sirius didn't think he'd ever be able to repay any of those debts. "I'm Sirius Black, by the way." He stuck out his hand, giving the other man a smile.
“Yup. I spent my summers working at my uncle’s dive shop back home,” Finnick had always enjoyed doing anything that involved the ocean or swimming so growing up in Florida had been great for him and California was even better, “Finnick Odair. It’s nice to meet you, Sirius.” His name had been on his business card, but he thought it best to formally introduce himself.
It was cool that they had that in common, and Sirius gave a small nod. "That's awesome." Sirius was grateful for the time that his uncle had been willing to spend with him. "Same to you, Finnick." He had seen the name on his card, however, he hadn't thought about introducing himself. "And you'll likely see myself and my girlfriend sometime soon. I think she'll be up for a diving adventure."
“Sounds good.” Finnick enjoyed when new people came into the shop especially when they already had some safety training, because then they didn’t have to spend as much time going over all of that and could get into the water quicker, “I look forward to seeing you guys there.” Not wanting to intrude any longer on Sirius, Finnick got to his feet and wiped the sand off his shorts, “I’ve gotta get going.” He wanted to continue looking for seashells before the tide came in. “Give me a call when you’re ready to come in and I’ll check the schedule.”
"Sure thing." Sirius replied with a small nod of his head, smiling softly as Finnick got up and he looked up at him. "Yeah, I'll be sure to do that. Let me know if you ever want any surf lessons." He gave a nod, happy to have met a potential new friend and if not, well at least he found out about the scuba lessons. That would be something neat to attempt, and he was looking forward to it.
