When Lilah, one of Kate’s sorority sisters, came into town and wanted to go out, Kate was excited to get her party on and do some drinking and dancing with a friend. But when Lilah ended up meeting with an old fling and heading home with the guy, Kate was left alone in the club. No big deal, she could have a couple of drinks, dance, then head home and pass out. She sidled up to the bar and ordered a cocktail, enjoying the thump of the music and the movements of the crowd.
There were three things that Asami did for fun. Work on her car, work on her inventions, and hit up the clubs. That last thing was a fairly recent development in her life and spurred on by a deep loneliness. Most of her friends had left and her love-life had evaporated. Tonight wasn't turning out so well, and she slipped away from a particularly bad creeper and made her way to the bar. She ordered a mixed drink, with emphasis on the rum. She glanced at the woman next to her and smiled. Somehow, Asami's hair and make-up remained perfect and on point despite having been there for an hour already. "Date ditch you?"
“Friend,” Kate said, giving the girl a whaddya gonna do kind of look. She shrugged. “It’s okay, though. I’m still here, and they still serve drinks. I can call for a ride home later.” She wasn’t going to be the DD for tonight, anyway. She and Lilah weren’t planning on doing much drinking, but now that her friend was gone, Kate didn’t much feel like dancing. “You?”
Asami nodded. “The drinks are pretty good.” She tapped her glass. “But I like them a little fruity.” She glanced back towards the dance crowd. “I’m here on my own. Honestly, I’d rather be working but it’s been heavily implied by some people that I really need to go out and have fun.”
“Ah, you like the sweet ones?” Kate could just drink the straight stuff. It seemed cheaper that way. Less non-alcohol diluting her alcohol. But she would pretty much drink anything. “Hey, I’m all for having fun. That’s why I’m here. Or, well, was supposed to be. I got ditched, so now I’m drinking and dancing on my own, I guess.”
“Sometimes. It depends on my mood.” She’d gotten a taste for Sake, but that had developed while working with some of her dad’s old business partners. Very traditional. She’d dumped most of them. She waved in the direction of the floor, and gave Kate a grin. “Want to dance? Be more fun than some of the creeps who might try to pick you up..”
Kate chuckled. “You and me out there on the floor might attract creeps.” She finished the last of the drink in her glass and set it down on the counter. “Absolutely.” It would be fun to get out there on the floor and put on a good show. Besides, Kate couldn’t deny the draw of the music. It was thumping in her chest now, and running through her veins.
“Don’t worry about creeps,” Asami boasted. She’d been in self-defense classes since she was six and had fought tougher opponents than handsy men. She knocked back her drink and set it on the counter. “After you!”
Kate moved out onto the dance floor, leading her new friend along the way. She could really get into the dancing, especially when the music was this loud and thunderous. So she closed her eyes for a moment and started in on it, letting the music move her.
Asami watched for a moment, swaying a little, before she too closed her eyes and let her body flow with the music. It was always better to dance with someone than to dance alone. And it was a lot of fun too!
And if crazy dudes came over to dance with them, they could brush them off together. Kate danced with Asami to the first song, grinning all the while. Then another song came on--faster and bouncier. Kate was having a blast dancing, and completely forgot about being ditched earlier.
Mission accomplished, right? It was the kind of night and kind of dance Asami really needed, and she enjoyed herself - and enjoyed the beat of the music and how it felt to dance. Even if she didn’t even know the woman’s name.
“Hey!” Kate had to lean in a little and raise her voice so she could be heard over the music. “You want a drink? I’m parched!”
“Yeah, I’m really thirsty,” Asami replied. A cold drink would do her good right about now. Kate was really attractive, but Asami didn’t want to make an idiot of herself. “I can buy! What do you want?” She started to pull Kate towards the bar again.
“Rum and Coke?” Kate asked, letting the other girl pull her to the bar. She grinned as she followed, feeling like she was sticky with dancing sweat.
“Got it.” At the bar, Asami slapped down some money. “Two rum and cokes.” She glanced at Kate, a big grin on her face. “I don’t feel like confusing them any more than I have to, and I can handle a rum and coke.”
Kate sidled up beside the other woman at the bar and grinned back. “Confusing who any more than you have to?” She asked, curiously. Her eyes moved to the crowd on the dance floor. “Them? Out there?”
Asami nodded towards the bartender. “They mixed up my drink a little wrong last time but I didn’t want to say anything. They probably can’t mess up rum and coke. Can they?” Was that even possible? Asami had never heard of rum and coke being messed up.
“Oh, I think it’s pretty hard to mess up a shot of rum in a glass of Coke,” Kate said, frowning. “I didn’t realize they made mistakes like that here,” she added, turning her attention back to the bartender. He was a young guy, and he gave her a smile when he brought over their drinks. Kate smirked and winked at him.
“He’s cute at least,” Asami said. She winked too. She’d already decided to let it slide, and it hadn’t been that bad. She’d mostly been trying to make a joke and it had all fallen flat. Asami was good at messing up like that.
“Well, here’s to cute bartenders, girls’ nights, and dancing until our feet fall off.” Kate said, lifting the glass in a toast.
Asami lifted her own glass as well. She grinned. “My feet are already tingling in anticipation.”
