Myrcella had waited as long as she possibly could but with her business taking off it was time to hand in her notice. She was getting more and more regular clients as well as drop in’s which currently meant she had little time to herself since she was still working part time at the bookstore. She hated to do it now with Tessa still worried about Jem, but he was stronger and she knew Will was helping out at the store while he was on summer break from university. And she had no doubt Capable would love to become a full time employee, especially since she was looking for a new house.
Knocking on Tessa’s office door during a quiet period she popped her head round, “Tessa? Are you busy?” she asked.
Tessa was miles away when the knock on her door came. Truth be told she hadn’t been able to properly concentrate for weeks now and currently she was staring out the window worrying a pencil between her teeth. Jolting from her reverie as she heard Myrcella’s voice in the office, she turned and tried to straighten all the papers laid out on her desk as if it would give the illusion of her having been working. She cleared her throat and smiled up at her friend, “Myrcella, please come in. How is everything out there? Do you need anything?”
“Everything is fine” she said, closing the door behind her and taking the seat in front of Tessa’s desk, “I just needed to talk to you. As you know my training is finished now and I’ve been advertising my beauty services and it’s been going really well. Well enough to move to making it my full time job. I’m sorry, I know it’s not ideal timing with everything you have going on at home”
Tessa couldn’t help but look shocked as Myrcella told her the news and stared at her for a moment as she processed what she was saying. Shaking her head and clearing her throat, she dropped her gaze briefly and put a smile on her face. “Congratulations,” she told her, genuinely happy for how well things were going for Myrcella. “That’s such good news, I know you’ve worked really hard setting yourself up,” her shoulders dropped as she rested her hands on the desk in front of her. “Although I can’t say I won’t miss you around here,” she admitted with a sad smile.
“Thank you. And you know if I had time I would absolutely stay because you’ve been so lovely, truly the best person ever to work for and I’ll still come and see you all. After all I know you’re going to need those neck massages for a while” she added softly with a kind smile. She’d taken to trying to help Tessa’s stress levels by giving her neck and shoulder massages when they were quiet. It wasn’t much but it was something to help she hoped. “And I know Capable would love to have some more hours so hopefully that will help too” She would hate to leave Tessa in the lurch.
“Hey that's ok, I ran this place by myself remember, it was just a lot more fun with you around, especially the neck massages,” Tessa smiled broadly. “So uh, when are you thinking of leaving?”
“August?” Myrcella suggested, “I mean I can be flexible, I won’t leave until all the shifts are covered and everything is sorted out”
“Ok, that’s very considerate thank you,” Tessa smiled and nodded. “Would you mind helping me with hiring someone new? I would really appreciate it if you could,” she asked hopefully. Myrcella was invaluable and it would be difficult to replace her, but with everything happening at home lately and how busy the shop was, she couldn’t do with less staff. “Oh, have you spoken about this with Capable?”
“Of course I can” Myrcella said, “We’ll find the perfect person to work with you. No, I thought it best not to until I’d spoken to you first but I know she’s looking for a new house and she loves working here. If you wanted to ask her to change to full time of course, it’s up to you”
“Thank you very much,” Tessa sighed with relief. “Could I ask you to put your notice in writing? Just for my records?” she explained, running a hand through her hair. “Well it’s certainly something we can discuss with her. Would you like to tell her yourself?” she offered, smiling up at Myrcella.
“I will, I just wanted to speak to you and make sure August would be okay” Myrcella nodded before giving a little shrug, “I don’t mind. I can do if that would be easier” Capable had noticed Myrcella seemed busy lately so it probably wouldn’t be too much of a surprise.
“That would be much appreciated, thank you Myrcella,” Tessa smiled. “Genuinely, thank for everything you’ve done here. You made starting my own business so much easier than it could have been and I will be forever grateful. If there’s anything I can do to support your new venture you must let me know and I will do my best to support you,” she reached over and took Myrcella’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Would like to tell her now? We could bring her in if you like?” she suggested.
“Thank you” Myrcella said with a smile, returning the squeeze of Tessa’s hand, “I’m glad that I have been of help, you deserve all the success in the world” she told the other woman honestly. Nodding, “That’s a good idea. I’ll get her” she stood to retrieve Capable from the store.
Tessa sighed as she watched Myrcella head out of the office to fetch the other girl. She was already thinking about what she would need to do in the coming days: prepare a job advert, potentially advertise in the local papers, take some time for reading applications and interviewing applicants and knowing they would have a hard task measuring up to replacing Myrcella’s contribution. She ran a hand through her hair, feeling the need to talk with someone. She would email Vanessa afterwards and see if she were free to meet up.
It wasn’t long before Myrcella returned with Capable, both of them taking a seat in front of the desk. “Is everything okay?” Capable asked looking between Tessa and Myrcella.
“Everything’s fine Capable, nothing to worry about, but things are going to be changing around her in the next couple of months and we wanted to keep you in the loop,” Tessa smiled at her reassuringly. “Myrcella, would you like to share your good news?”
Myrcella nodded, “Well you know how my business has been going well lately which is great but it also means I need to leave the bookstore so I can focus completely on that” she explained.
“Oh, I thought you would sometime but it’s come so soon” Capable said leaning over to hug Myrcella.
Tessa smiled as she watched the girls hug. She knew they’d become close during their time working in the shop together and she hoped they would continue to be friends afterwards. “This obviously means some changes for us. We’re going to need to look for someone else to help out with the shop, and I was also wondering what your thoughts about increasing your hours were,” she asked.
“Oh I’d love to” Capable said, “I love working here, you’ve been so good about letting me run the children’s reading groups and lead some of the summer workshops. If I can help you more then I’d very much like to do that”
Myrcella smiled, “You really have done well Capable” she said, looking to Tessa to make sure she wasn’t speaking out of turn. Knowing Capable’s backstory as she did Myrcella thought it was lovely to see her so settled and happy.
“Great, I can’t thank you enough for your help and your willingness to take on more,” Tessa smiled proudly. “Would you be up for helping us find the next member of our little family?” she asked.
Capable smiled, she was so glad Tessa was happy with her work. Having never had a job before she had been worried to start with about doing things wrong but Tessa and Myrcella had been so patient with her. “Oh I’d love to help” she nodded.
“Excellent, so give me a couple of days to put together some kind of job description which I’ll run by both of you so you can see if there’s anything I’ve missed or anything you think the new person could do. Is that alright by both of you?” she asked them. She always wanted them to feel included and involved in the business.
“Of course” Myrcella said and Capable nodded in agreement, “Thank you Tessa” she said with a smile.
“Right, come on, now that’s sorted we should go and unload this mornings delivery” Myrcella said with another smile for Tessa before they moved to go and do their work.
