Katou had never been particularly good at opening up and letting his friends in. He tried not to let anyone see him vulnerable, and he definitely didn’t want anyone getting to know his deepest darkest secrets. He knew most of his friends would risk their lives to save him if it was needed and if he let them, though he was far more likely to throw himself on the sword before they had chance, but who knew if they’d feel the same if they really got to know him. He couldn’t imagine anyone wanting much to do with him if they got to know the darkest parts of him. He didn’t want much to do with himself half the time.
The thing was though, Izzy already knew more than most. The first time he’d met her, he’d been digging through the trash for supper. She was one of the few people in his life - his immediate family being the others - who actually knew when his real birthday was. Maybe he hadn’t told her about his love affair with the white boy, but, well, the first time she’d met him he’d probably looked exactly like a tweaked out junkie. So she probably knew. Maybe.
And if she didn’t before, she would by the end of the night. He hadn’t exactly called ahead, but he had brought a case of beer that he hoped would make up for it. He knocked on her door.
Izzy had known that Katou needed help and the help she’d offered had been food and friendship. Which had turned out really rather well for the both of them in her opinion. He was definitely one of her closest friends and she felt kind of like a protective older sister. She would do anything for him and that wouldn’t change, no matter what.
She could tell he had been using something when they first met, but she wasn’t sure what or how much of an addiction it had been. Maybe that had been why she had kept tabs on him to begin with, making sure he ate and everything. She had seen how much he’d changed though, and it made her very proud.
Answering the door she smiled, “Hey you, come on in. Everything okay?” she asked giving him a hug after closing the door behind him.
“Yeah, everything’s fine,” Katou said, stepping into Izzy’s place and slipping off his shoes as he walked in. “I uh, came to ask a favour, so I figured I’d bring some beer.”
“You don’t need to ply me with beer for a favour you know” she grinned at him, “But I’m not going to say no, let’s go to the living room and you can tell me what you need”
Katou led the way to the living room, and placed the case of beer on the coffee table, pulling one out for himself and one for Izzy, and used the metal nails on his left arm to open the tops. “Uh, well, I got this birthday thing on Saturday and was wondering if you could make me a cake for it?”
Izzy had to admit it was pretty cool to see him open the beers that way, “Of course I will, whatever you’d like. Is it for a friend because your birthday has already happened right?” she asked, because she’d done him a little party for just the two of them when she realised she’d missed it.
“No, it’s for me,” Katou said, and quickly chugged back about half his beer. “For uh, this meeting I go to every week? Uh, Saturday’s been one year since I last did heroin.” That was… a lot harder to say than Katou thought it would be. His facial expression was neutral, if not a little taut, but his heart was hammering.
“Oh I see” Izzy said, before putting her drink down and wrapping her arms around him, “That is amazing”” she enthused, “I am so proud of you. Thank you for asking me to share in your achievement”
Katou hadn’t been sure what to expect, but a hug was nice. He returned it, glad for the contact, and pulled away after about ten seconds. “Well, you know. It ain’t such a big deal,” Katou said sheepishly, pleased by the praise but a little embarrassed as well.
Of course Izzy was going to hug him, she knew it was a big thing telling her and she wanted him to know how proud of him she was. “It is a big deal and you will have the best cake ever” she promised him.
“Oh, good. You know, I’ve been to some of these things and they just ended up with WalMart cake. Not that I don’t eat it just the same, but it don’t hold a candle to the stuff you can make.” The hard stuff out of the way, Katou was far more comfortable, leaning back on the couch comfortably.
“I’ll blow all the other cakes out of the water, everybody will be talking about your cake for a long time” she grinned, “Speaking of cake I have some cupcakes I made yesterday, would you like one?” she asked him, remembering her baking experimentation the day before.
“Good. Show ‘em how it’s done. Maybe they’ll actually start bringing decent cakes to these things.” He laughed a little, leaning back on the couch and taking a pull from his beer. “It’s like you don’t even know me, Iz. If I ever say no to your cupcakes, I might be possessed.”
“See you are so much better than my brother, he acts all put out like I’m forcing things on him” Izzy said standing to go get the cakes, admittedly Alec generally only moaned about needing to go to the gym more but still it was a complaint. Bringing a selection back into the living room she set them on the table, “You can take some with you too, I made a bigger batch than I should have”
Katou snorted. “Then there’s something wrong with your bro,” Katou said. Of course, he never had to worry about gaining weight or going to the gym more, given that all he had to do to lose or gain weight was think about it. If anything, it looked like he could use a little more meat on his bones, but this is how he looked when he’d died and that’s how he always pictured himself. “Yeah? I’ll definitely take some extra.” Kanan would probably appreciate the extra cupcakes too.
“That’s what I keep telling him” Izzy grinned, Katou had always looked a little thin which was probably partly why Izzy kept feeding him. He needed feeding up and she was happy to do that. “Great, I’ll pack some up later” she smiled, glad to be sending him away with food later.
Katou smiled weakly a little, and then cleared his throat. There were two words in the English (and, well, Japanese) language that Katou pretty much never spoke outloud. One of them was ‘sorry’ and pretty much all the synonyms of the word. And the other one was… “Thank you,” Katou muttered, looking at a very interesting spot on Izzy’s ceiling. For the cupcakes, obviously, and totally not anything else more substantial Izzy don’t get any ideas.
Izzy laughed and hugged him, “You know that's going to be one of my favourite memories ever” she told him in amusement but with honest affection. Ruffling his hair before releasing him once more.
“Shut up,” Katou said, reluctantly hugging her back. “No one will believe you anyway if you try to tell them.”
“I don’t need to tell anybody, it’ll just be mine to remember and cherish” she winked at him before they ate cake and talked the afternoon away.
