With Kanan looking into a new line of business, Katou was sure that he’d soon be out of work. It was kind of disappointing. Being Kanan’s own person bitch maybe wasn’t a glamorous job, but it was a job, and an easy one at that. And Kanan didn’t mind Katou’s bad attitude either.
Luckily, Kanan wasn’t the only person that Katou knew who needed employees. After his disasterous one-and-only shift at McDonalds, Katou was pretty sure that customer service wasn’t his cup of tea. But Izzy was less likely to fire him after one shift that McDonalds was, and he had to admit that hanging out with her all day wouldn’t be too bad.
He’d even gotten relatively dressed up. He’d tied his shoulder length blond hair back, and thrown on a white button down t-shirt and a pair of black slacks. They were his school uniform from his dreams, and pretty much the only respectable clothes he owned. He’d thought them a bullshit dream gift when they came through originally, but now he was kind of thankful he hadn’t thrown them out. He even had a glamour on his arm so that it was less likely that every other customer would question him about it.
Izzy had already shown him the basics, and he thought that he’d caught most of it. Though, he still wasn’t sure if he knew the difference between a Macchiato, Cappuccino, and a Latte. Maybe they wouldn’t notice if he just poured a bunch of milk in a coffee and handed it over. Now all that was left was serving the actual customers. Luckily, there weren’t any at the till yet.
“You doing anything after this?” Katou asked. “You wanna hit the gym and train for your brother’s race thing?”
Izzy had complete confidence in Katou, of course the fact that Baxter’s customers were on the whole all very friendly and nice helped. She didn’t ever want him to feel under pressure, they weren’t Starbucks, they offered a friendly service without targets attached to it. None of the employees were timed when making drinks and service with a smile or a friendly bit of banter were valued higher than making a coffee in under a minute.
“Sounds good” Izzy said, “We’ve definitely got one of the strongest teams I think” she grinned, ever since the dreams she’d become that little bit more competitive.
“You’re telling me.” Katou really wasn’t entirely sure why they were bothering to train in the first place. After all, he was pretty sure nearly everyone on the team had superpowers of some sort, and Katou wasn’t ashamed to take advantage of that. “We’ll wipe the floor with all the other teams.”
A customer had come up, which was a little annoying. Katou was in the middle of a conversation. “Whatdya want?” he asked, turning his head but not his body toward the customer.
“Uh… Could I get a sparkling latte?” the customer asked, clearly a little taken aback.
“We absolutely will” Izzy said with a smile before laying her hand on Katou’s arm in a silent small reprimand, “Of course” she said with a smile for the customer, “Would you like any cookies to go with that? We’ve just got our new beach themed ones done and they’re pretty tasty even if I do say so myself”
The customer shook his head but relaxed a little so Izzy walked Katou through the latte preparation before letting him take over in order to receive the payment.
Katou frowned to himself when Izzy touched his arm. Probably not the best way to start his first shift. He’d never had a legit job before, one that was completely above board, and it wasn’t easy to adjust his thinking. Though, he thought he did alright at handing over the drink and asking for the total. He could maybe go with more friendliness, though he was much politer and even remembered to wish the customer a good day after he handed back the change (none of which, Katou noted with a touch of annoyance, went into the tip cup). Then he glanced at Izzy, bracing himself.
“Well the second half of that went much better than the first” she told him with a smile, “Remember Baxter’s is friendly and welcoming so what we say and how we act has to represent that. Hardly any customers are ever rude so we don’t need to be either” Izzy wasn’t going to yell at him for getting something wrong on his first day, that wasn’t how a good manager acted in her opinion.
“Baxter’s might be, but I ain’t,” Katou said, frowning. There was a time when Katou’d been a sweet kid, but that time was passed. He wanted to do well for Izzy, but goddamn, the idea of smiling at a bunch of morons all day made his fingers twitch. “Maybe I can just like, work in the back or something?”
“We can try that if you’d like but I think if you give it a chance you’d do well. You’re far nicer than you seem to realise” Izzy told him, it was up to Katou, she could easily set him up keeping an eye on the ovens and even taste testing batches if that would be more comfortable for him.
Katou snorted. “Nicer than I realize,” he repeated, a little amused. He doubted that was possible. He was rather proud of his dickishness anyway. That didn’t stop him from smiling at the next customer that came up to the til. “Hey. How can we help you?” he asked. Well, that was probably better.
Izzy watched as he handled the next customer, proving that she had been right because the smile earned him a blush and a smile back as the customer placed her order. When she had her drink and had paid and moved off Izzy leaned close, “You heartbreaker” she teased him.
Katou snorted. “If only I had that effect on people I was actually trying to bang,” he sighed dramatically. Honestly, it had been ages since Jin had moved back to Korea, and Katou kind of missed the whole dating someone you’re actually attracted to thing.
A snort of laughter escaped Izzy then, “Aww going through a dry spell? Maybe we should go out one night and find you a nice guy” she said a contemplative look on her face, “I wonder if my brother knows anybody...”
“You and I both know I’d send some nice guy screaming,” Katou said, winking at her with a grin. It was kind of nice having someone around who knew his preferences. Not that he was about to go around blabbing to the whole world. “You uh, think he might? Not that I’m that bothered by it.”
“But it could be fun for a while” Izzy winked back, she was entirely supportive of people loving people - gender really wasn’t an issue as far as she was concerned. “He might, I’ll ask him and see. We all need to let off a little steam sometimes” she was definitely no stranger to that.
Well, he couldn’t deny that it could be fun. And he sure as hell didn’t need to like someone to sleep with them if it came to that. “Yeah?” He cleared his throat. “Well, that might be cool, I guess.”
“Leave it with me” Izzy said confidently, she could at least find someone he could have a little fun with if nothing else. After all they’d have to be pretty special to pass the protective Izzy test to be anything more.
If anyone needed to go through a protective friend test, it was Katou, though getting away without one would be a-okay by him. “Counting on you, Iz. Make sure he’s hot.”
