Hanna said that she was done with the dreams a lot. Even in the dreams she was done with them. Or more the things that were going on in them. The mystery, the blackmail and stalking. The heartache. The last was something she mostly tried to ignore, she convinced herself it didn’t hurt when it did, she was happy, had moved on. Yet even in the dreams, it rang hollow. It also played on so many of Hanna’s personal insecurities that she was have a more difficult time distancing herself from those emotions.
Thank goodness for her internship. With a boss who was nowhere near as bad as Claudia. But it was giving her something to throw herself into to focus her mind. Even after the talk with Caroline after dreaming of Spencer seeking her permission to try something with Caleb and the engagement ring from the dreams when it just became too real for her to ignore.
Right now though, it was time for coffee. Sweet sweet coffee. She probably had more coffee in her system than blood these days. Oh well. Order placed, the blonde went to the pick up counter to wait, fiddling on her phone. Part of her was expecting some sort of threatening message (oh the joys of paranoia from the dreams crossing over), but really it was just flipping through Pinterest.
So much had been going on in Emily’s life lately that she knew there were probably a million things she had been forgetting. What with the move and helping her mom plan her father’s funeral, which was the following Monday, she’d had so much on her mind that she didn’t even think she’d remember her own name if asked. Luckily, when the barista asked her that very question, she only hesitated for a moment before giving it. After paying, she headed towards the pick up counter and stopped dead in her tracks when she saw one of the things she had been forgetting.
Hanna.
“Hanna! Oh my god.” She had told her friend that she was coming home not long after she had gotten the news of her father’s death, but with everything going on had forgotten to tell her that she was actually back, “I feel like such an idiot.” She said as she approached the blond.
Hanna of course had been heartbroken to hear about why Emily was coming back. Her dad had always been an awesome guy. But she wouldn’t have been lying that she was happy to see one of her closest friends again. Even if she didn’t want her friends to go through the dreams? She would be lying if they didn’t make her miss all of them so much more than she would have otherwise.
Hearing her name though, the blonde looked up and she felt herself genuinely smile.
“Ohmigod, Emily!” And phone put in her purse, Hanna quickly hugged Emily. “When did you get back? Are you doing okay? God it’s so good to see you.”
Way good. It was too soon following the dream about Spencer. Caleb acting weird, then that dream the following day? Definitely a lot to take in. So instead getting to see Emily? Just the distraction she needed.
Emily had missed her friends so much when she had decided to go away for college and despite continuing to talk to talk to them on the phone and on-line, it just wasn’t the same as seeing them in person. Hugging Hanna, she felt some of the stress of the last of days ebbing away. “I got home a few days ago. I totally meant to tell you, but so much has been going on that I’m sure I’ve forgotten for than just that.” She knew she would have realized it eventually, but seeing Hanna in person was so much better than just talking to her on the phone.
It definitely wasn’t the same. Everyone had gone off to school and Hanna remained behind, but there wasn’t much to do about that beyond make new friends while doing her best to keep in touch with the others. Admittedly it had been awkward on her end as she had dreams about them and they had no idea. But it so didn’t matter.
“It’s fine, I totally get it. You have so much going on. I’m just happy to see you.” Not like Hanna had been very… well, attentive the past few days? Beginning of the month and it was finding out about Cece, then suddenly the new dreams and… it felt much longer than it probably had been.
Hearing her name called, Hanna picked it up before going back to Emily to wait with her for when her own order was called.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt so stressed out. If I ever claimed I was stressed out before, I clearly didn’t know what I was talking about,” Emily’s name was called moments after Hanna’s and she went to retrieve her own drink, “Are you free or do you need to be somewhere?” Having not seen Hanna in months, she really hoped that her friend didn’t have anywhere to go and they could simply catch up. Emily needed nothing more than to just sit and catch up.
Assuming Emily ended up on the network and started dreaming (which Hanna really didn’t want for her, even if no one else could really understand it, not even Caleb), being more stressed out than ever? That would be a constant phrase. Hanna did her best to ignore them until it got to be too much, but there was definitely a current of ongoing stress. “I can’t even imagine.” But this was a different type of stress. Taking a sip of her coffee as Emily went to pick up her own order, Hanna shook her head when she came back with the question. “Nope, nowhere to be right now. So I’m all yours.”
Hearing that Hanna was free, it felt like a little of Emily’s stress lifted from her body. She felt bad, not going right home to be with her mother, but she’d been spending most of her time with her mother lately and she had a feeling that her mother’s sadness was only making her own that much worse. “Great. Let’s grab a seat then.” She wished that Aria and Spencer were there too, like old times, but for now she was just happy that Hanna was there. “You can tell me everything that’s been going on with you lately.” She was sure there were things she didn’t know yet.
Sometimes it was necessary to get a break from all the pain and sorrow. Now like it would be easy, and Hanna remembered how Emily had been in the dreams. But even just an hour or whatever to catch up could be good for her. Hanna was more than happy to give that to her friend. “Definitely.” Heading over to one of the tables, Hanna sat down and then paused at the question. Yeah. That. She definitely wasn’t going to go into the dreams as there was nothing to say Emily was on the network… but then there was the Caleb issue which was directly tied to the dreams for why it was awkward.
“Oh you know. Still dating Caleb, but I’ve been busy with my internship. I actually applied for this fashion school in New York and got in, but I don’t know if I’m going to go or stay here because the cost of living in New York and tuition.” And the fact she had seen what had happened in the dreams when she’d been on her five year track to get done in three and how that had ruined things and then the stupidity of not going forward for a guy and it was all just stupid. But money was definitely another major factor.
“Right. Caleb. I’m going to have to meet him, now that I’m back.” Emily smirked and took a sip of her coffee. She knew that Hanna had been dating this Caleb for a while, but Emily still needed to make sure that he was right for her friend. “The three of us should go out soon.” Going out with friends would definitely help right about now, “I couldn’t even imagine what it’d be like living in New York, but that’s awesome that you go in. Congrats.” She held her cup up as if she were toasting.
“Yeah, definitely.” It would at least be a reason to actually text him and not keep avoiding him. They’d have to talk about the whole Spencer thing. Which Hanna so didn’t want to do… but it wasn’t like she could keep Emily from meeting him. Emily knew her horrible track record with guys from that need to be accepted, even if the guy was just using her. And it was serious with Caleb, even if horribly awkward right now.
But yes, her managing to get into the school. A small smile was given as she raised her drink in mock toast. “Thanks. I mean, I actually forgot I applied? I did it one day in frustration and to prove a point. But yeah. New York is stupid expensive.”
“You forgot that you applied? If I apply for anything, I’m stressing about it until I hear back.” It might have been a little selfish, considering she only just got back herself, but part of Emily hoped that Hanna didn’t end up going to New York. Knowing that Hanna was still in Orange County had made the decision to move back a little easier, even if she had forgotten to actually tell her that she was back before today.
“I didn’t even think it would happen really. I was just really mad at my dad,” Because well, Tom Marin was a horrible father and yet Hanna had always strived to prove herself to him, “So I applied to prove a point, never thinking it would happen and then suddenly I got the acceptance letter.” Hanna really didn’t know what she wanted now. She’d already been concerned about it, but it was the opportunity. Only to see the dreams and knowing she and Caleb were fairly similar to themselves in them so seeing it as a warning. It was a jumbled mess.
Emily knew about Hanna’s strained relationship with her father and how it could prompt Hanna to do certain things. “Well, if you do decide to go, we should take a trip out there and I can help you find an apartment.” Emily had gone to New York while she’d been going to school on the East Coast and had been wanting to go back a while. A trip with Hanna sounded like a great idea to her.
One of these days, Hanna felt she would stop striving for her father’s approval. Maybe. It’s what she kept telling herself, but then he had once again proved he didn’t care, compared her to Kate and next thing you know, she’s applying to a school she didn’t think she had any chance at getting into. “Or we could take a trip out there anyway. Just for fun.” Goodness knew they both could use it for different reasons, “I mean, classes start the 22nd of September at UC Irvine so it’s not like there wouldn’t be time.”
Smiling, she took a sip of her coffee, “So, anything or one I should know about?” She probably would already know, but Hanna was Hanna and given there wasn’t too much she could discuss about in terms of dreams as Emily was blissfully unaware of those, it was finding other things. Besides, it had been a year without her best friend. Hanna would take all the time she could get with her.
“I could definitely get on board with a trip for fun,” Emily took a sip of her own coffee. Emily could definitely use some time away to think of nothing but having fun and a little retail therapy. She didn’t dress quite to the nines like Hanna often did, but she could appreciate designer clothes when the right piece jumped out at her.
“No, no one to know about.” There had been a few girls during Emily’s time at school, but no one serious. Besides, with her moving back home, she wouldn’t have wanted to do the whole long distance relationship thing.
Hanna was the type to know what she liked and go with it. If it wasn’t fashion, it would have been something else. But good. A trip for fun sounded like just what the doctor ordered. Especially with this stupid town and the dreams. “Yay! Trip to New York with Emily, it’ll be great.” Because it would. So help her, Hanna would ensure the trip was good so that both she and Emily were able to let go of their stresses for a bit.
“Well that’s good. Or not good, but it just means I don’t need to check up on anyone.” Because Hanna was also protective, which meant if there was someone she should know about, she would vet the person to make sure Emily wouldn’t get hurt. Though with everything that had happened, Hanna wasn’t shocked there wasn’t anyone now.
Emily couldn’t help but smile at how enthusiastic Hanna was at the prospect of a trip and especially at how protective she was when it came to someone Emily might have been dating, “You know, the reason isn’t ideal, but I’m glad I did. I’ve missed you.” She had made friends at school, but she’d never felt quite the way she did with them as she always did with Hanna, Aria or Spencer.
“We can't always choose the reasons but I'm glad you're back since I've definitely missed you too.” Smiling, the blonde leaned over and hugged her friend before settling back. True she had missed Aria, Emily and Spencer even before the dreams but the more they continued one (even the latest twist with Spencer), the more she missed them. Life was weird like that.
